Tonight we bid adieu to the inaugural summer season of one of television’s newest hit shows. When we first started watching, we thought it would be the season finale, but ABC Family gave us an early gift with the promise of another twenty-two episodes in this first season.

We’ve gotten to know the Kennish and Vasquez families and a handful of their inner circle. But tonight that circle is dramatically increased by one. So let’s see how this last episode for a while plays out, shall we?

We open with Daphne and Emmett hanging out in his room, planning a Carlton fundraiser. Daphne has all sorts of ideas, but she is stunned to learn that Bay and Emmett have already worked out a carwash event with John. Noticing photos of Bay on his wall (previously shrined to Daphne), she quickly realizes they now have a thing going. She’s upset and can’t believe it after Emmett had told her he’d never go for a hearing girl. She doesn’t, however, tell Emmett about her growing feelings.

Bay is busy with an art show at Buckner, when she notices a man (Giles Marini) admiring her art. She’s quickly shocked to learn he’s not a mysterious art dealer, but is, in fact, Angelo Sorrento- her birth father. He tries to talk to her, but they’re interrupted by John. Bay covers his identity, but is resistant or intimidated to actually converse with her long lost father. He lets her know he’ll be in town at a hotel for the next three days.

Daphne confronts Bay over her hidden relationship with Emmett. She’s angry and tells Bay that she could never know Emmett like she does. Bay retorts that the point of dating is so they can get to know each other. Bay thinks Daphne is just lashing out because her life is falling apart. She keeps the news of Angelo’s visit to herself. Bay later tells Emmett about meeting Angelo and being unsure what to do next, as Angelo hasn’t done anything to her personally. Emmett, clearly already understanding Bay, tells her there is no way she will be able to stay away.

Daphne and Emmett are at the car wash preparing for the charity event. They get into a tremendous fight, made even more powerful by the overlapping sign language and subtitles. She finally admits to liking him, but he blows up at having waited eight years for her to notice him. They share a brief kiss (which I didn’t think had as much chemistry as he does with Bay), but he quickly pulls back, declaring he is with Bay.

Bay goes to see Angelo, who lets her know he found out about the switch via the newspaper article. She wants to know more about why he left, but he says it’s a story for when they have more time. She thinks if this is to continue, it can’t be a secret. So, she takes him home and springs him on her parents. John is absolutely livid, ordering Angelo out of the house and threatening to call the police. Daphne walks into the room and is horrified by the surprise guest. She gives him a moment to explain himself, but he doesn’t know she can read lips and thinks she doesn’t understand. She storms off, and is somewhat comforted by Regina, who insists she didn’t know he was coming and she won’t let him hurt her. Daphne wants nothing to do with Angelo.

Kathryn talks to Bay about their concerns over Angelo. Bay convinces her that this is not about them. This is about the part of her that’s always felt like she didn’t belong and her need to explore it. Kathryn, to her credit, understands and promises to talk to John for her.

At the carwash, Daphne is cold with Emmett and resistant to Wilke’s overt flirting. But when Bay, Toby, and Wilke share a laugh about Wilke running through the carwash, Emmett feels left out. He picks a fight with Bay about her not learning sign fast enough, having to interpret for him, thinking she’ll drop him, and not being part of her hearing world. To her credit, Bay instantly realizes that Daphne told him about her feelings. Emmett walks away.

Angelo and Regina meet and, well, restate everything we already knew. He left because he thought she cheated and Daphne wasn’t his. He thinks if the switch hadn’t happened, they’d still be together. Regina thinks he came back for his now-rich daughter. Back at the hotel, John visits and wants to talk man to man. Angelo cuts to the chase and insinuates he wants in on the hospital lawsuit. He even claims to have an affidavit from one of the nurses, claiming she worked 36 hours beyond union rules that night. The Kennish’s lawyer is unsure if they should use it, as if it’s fabricated, they could be complicit in criminal activity. She thinks they should take the hospital’s recent settlement offer.

Emmett, after a brotherly visit from Toby, goes to see Bay. He admits he’s not comfortable with the hearing world, but she’s different. He always thought he’d wait for a deaf girl. But then, in a moment which had to have melted the hardest stone hearts, Emmett uses his voice and emotionally tells Bay, “I just want you.” (And ‘fess up in the comments section if that totally choked you up and brought tears to your eyes.)

Throughout the hour, Wilke and Toby excitedly talked about playing the East-West Festival in St. Louis (which I don’t think really exists). The catch is that Wilke booked the gig with the hook of a deaf drummer. Emmett is resistant, but agrees to go by the end of the hour. As they all go to leave, Emmett kisses Bay goodbye to Daphne’s chagrin and Wilke declares (to Toby) his interest in Daphne. After they’re gone, Daphne coldly informs Bay that she’s not giving up on Emmett. Bay, in return, says she wants to get to know Angelo better.

Kathryn likens Angelo-John to her rocky relationship with Regina. She gets John to relax a little, but then admits she feels lost in the whole switch situation. After dealing with John’s anger, the girls’ feelings, and navigating Regina, she doesn’t know who she is anymore, but she intends to find out.

Regina is dejected when the bank declines to finance a loan for her to start her own salon. She’s surprised by a visit from Angelo who tells her he plans to share whatever lawsuit money he gets with her and wants to be a family again. Regina is stunned into silence, but a curious Kathryn watches the whole thing from the kitchen window.

So … wow… that all happened. It was relatively small moments in terms of reveals, but definitely an hour packed full of emotions. The Bay/Daphne/Emmett scenes were so powerfully acted by all three of the young actors. I know the hyped plot was Angelo’s introduction, but I could have watched the teens all hour. I know people seem to be divided between Daphne and Bay and who they think is more spoiled/selfish/etc…, but I think they’ve both had their worlds shaken and are trying to find their way. I truly don’t believe either is the sole victim or vixen here.

AMAZING episodee. Absolutely fantastic. This show really should be getting much more publicitly than it already has.

I must say I enjoy Wilke’s character and I hope he’s incluuded more in the second half of season 1. He’s a pleasure to watch and he also has great chemistry with Toby and Emmett. Speaking of Toby, it was absoluutely hilarious to see his signing of how he portrayed Bay, but still sweet that the carefree/apathetic character is learning signn to communicate better with Emmett. It really is heartwarming and I hope to see more plots given to Toby

As for the Emmett, I def agree with you that I do not feele any romantic chemistry between Daphne and Bay and I am full on for team Bemmett. When he used his speaking voice, I was actually scared at first becuase I was so shocked that he was actually talking. But soon my heart was melting at such a mysteriouus and confident Emment being so vulnerable as to speaking orally to a hearing person. It was absolutely beautiful. Yay bemmett!

As for Daphne…she used to be my favourite character until she flippedd out on Regina and started impeding on Bemmett. Just like John, I understand why they act the. Way they do, but frankly it’s annoying.

Regina and Kathrynn unfortunately have taken a backseat to my interest levels in their characters. I don’t really care about them at all, however I do like Angelo! He seems incredibly interesting and I hope to see more of him also

Cannot wait for SAB to return. Hopefully more dynamics in Bemmett’s relationship will arise …not including Daphne, ugh. I’m looking forward to how Emmett’s mother will react

    • karenb says:

Actually, I get Daphne’s anger towards Regina. It’s not like she didn’t tell her she was adopted, Regina willingly, knowingly, and illegally kept her from knowing her birth parents and her brother. I follow Regina’s reasoning, but I don’t think that means that Daphne (and Bay) weren’t entitled to be outright furious with her. It’s not like they held it over her for weeks and weeks either, they got angry, the talked about it, and they came to a tenuous understanding.

  2. dela says:

I ignored Emmett at first, looking at him as Daphne’s freakish fan, but now, he’s more attractive than any other character in this series! I see great chemistry between him and Bay, their relationship seems relax and playful, I really hope Daphne won’t screw anything! I did understand why Daphne reacts like Bay has taken away everything from her, but I can’t stand the way she treated Regina.

    • karenb says:

You can see my reply to the above comment… I don’t think Daphne handled the Regina thing poorly. Regina told a pretty huge lie and needed to be taken to task for it.

I think it’ll be interesting to see more of Melody (Marlee Matlin) and how she reacts to the burgeoning relationship.

      • dela says:

I really hope Melody will like Bay. I mean, love triangle is always a good plot, but I think Daphne had a good chemistry with Wilke. She even did better than with Liam, don’t you think?

        • karenb says:

Well, if she and Wilke get together, we’ll definitely see more of Daphne’s wild side. Liam came and went so quickly, that it was hard to get invested. But the irony of Emmett giving her such a hard time about dating a hear guy and Bay not wanting her to date her ex, is certainly not lost.

  3. Megan Oyer says:

I love this show so much and I am really thankful that we get more episodes. I loved the way this one ended. I am totally a Bemmet fan. I just hate the promo at the end. “Coming Soon”, only in television is 6 months “Soon”. We have to wait till 2012 to get more. I think I might die from withdrawerals.

  4. Heather says:

I love this show… I’m so going to miss it until 2012. ABC Family’s interpretation of the word soon is completely different from mine, but anyway…

So, I thought this was the best episode of the season. My favorite part was definitely the fight between Daphne and Emmitt. The super fast subtitles mixed with the fuious signing really brought tons of emotions to a silent conversation. I loved it! (Especially when Emmitt pulled away- I SO want him with Bay!) Which is why, I will admit I got choked up and gave a little “AWw” when he spoke to Bay in his real voice. That was the sweetest thing I’ve seen on tv in a long long time.

And OMG, could they have gotten anyone better to play Angelo?? I LOVE Gilles Marini. He is like the hottest man on tv (next to Shemar Moore, of course :)) However, I’m not sure I like Angelo’s character. He’s a bit too much at a convenient time. I hope for Bay’s sake he’s for real. She doesn’t deserve to get shoved aside more than she already has been.

BTW, does anyone else have a feeling that Kathryn & Regina may be working together later on? That perhaps their paths are going to cross into the area of business partners too?? That loan officer focused on co-signers way too much at a time when the writers suddenly realized that Kathryn didn’t really have a life outside of switched children.

Finally, I’m beginning to not like Daphne much. I get that her life is hard and that the hits just keep coming, but she is beginning to act like a spoiled brat. Bay is the one who grew up rich & goes to a snotty school…how come Daphne is the princess?? I dunno, I mean, I think she was right to feel betrayed at Regina’s secret, but enough is enough. They have apparently made up since she’s living in the guest house again, so why keep bringing it up? For someone who reads lips and faces, she couldn’t see the honest shock on her mother’s face when Angelo showed up? And why should Bay or Emmitt have to ask her permission… both of them were right. Daphne ignored him, and it was only when she realized that he had someone else that she really wanted him. I think in a way I hope Wilke actually loosens her up a bit… she’s strung WAY too tight right now.

  5. Laurissa says:

I am so Team Bemmett! I love Bay and Emmett together! At the beggining, Daphne was so nice and Bay was mean. Now it is completly switched. Emmett has been there for 8 years, but now that her life is falling apart she feels like she likes Emmett. And now that she nows he is we Bay, she want him more. And she also pulled the Liam thing. Bay didn’t make her break up with him, Bay was just upset. I also think that the way she was to Regina was terrible. Yes I understand why she was upset because Regina had kept that secret, but enough is enough. I understand why Regina did it. She couldn’t give up her three year old daughter at the point. It would have been to painful. And with the DUI’s at the time, the Kennish’s would have taken Daphne from her. And Daphne is being so terrible to Bay too. Bay is trying to be nice and get along with Daphne, but Daphne is being so rude. I think the writers should keep Bay and Emmett together!!!!
