As a tribute to our veterans on Veterans Day, I was pleased with this week’s episode of Bones. There were several moments where I actually shed some tears, and believe me …that is a hard thing to do. We are also treated to a first time ever episode where all the Squinterns are in the same episode. It starts out a bit shaky, but the team finds their way of working together.

Bones is trying to learn about the fascination of basketball and pretty much all sports that Booth loves. In this process she applies some of the fundamentals of coaching to her team of interns. She puts them in the basement of unsolved/ unidentified remains and wants them to give faces to the remains given to them. At first, they are heavily competing with each other and Bones takes a quick moment to point out each of their flaws which in turn, stops all the bragging rights they seem to want to claim. To make the team official, Bones gives each of them a surprise slap on the tush.

As each intern identifies their remains, it is Arastoo that is convinced there is more to his homeless guy than meets the eye. Slowly, one by one, the others help in their specific field of expertise to help him figure out what this man died from and why. Fisher is the last to finally help out. They end up putting the time of his death to actually be on 9-11-2001, and now they are even more curious.

When Booth does some investigating of his own, he is convinced this homeless man fought in Desert Storm. He is right and finds out the man’s name is Murphy and he has a wife and son. She hasn’t seen him and the system failed in finding help for him medically.

There were several moments throughout the episode that was sure to bring a tear to your eye and had you remembering that horrible day. Cam did a wonderful job trying to keep herself together as she told of her difficult times of telling the families of their loss of loved ones. The interns had a moment of tension that turned into an enlightening moment of Arastoo explaining to Abernathy that it was a hate crime not a religious crime. Abernathy thanks him for explaining it much better than anyone else could have. I admit, my eyes were glued to the set at that moment.

After Hodgins figures that Murphy was about 500 feet from the Pentagon when the plane hit, the interns take turns saying what they were doing when they learned of the attacks. The final intern, Wendell, says that he lost his Uncle who was a firefighter in NYC. More tears.

Booth finds out that Murphy was outside the Pentagon shouting ‘Walk in More Park” and nobody knew what he was talking about, and so ignored him. But Booth finds out his Army buddies were Walken, Moore and Park and that they lost their lives in an ammo dump. Murphy was petitioning to get his fallen soldiers the Silver Star medals. I loved how Booth was determined to find closure and give back the dignity to a fellow soldier.

When the plane came down, it hit some light posts and some debris hit Murphy and cracked his rib. When the plane hit the Pentagon, Murphy went in and used his entire body to try and lift heavy pieces of debris as to rescue 3 people out of the building. The pressure from lifting heavy beams snapped his rib and he started to bleed out, but continued to pull the 3 to safety. The man was a hero! Booth let the family and told the son his father was not a broken homeless man, but instead was a hero. More tears

It was Bones final speech to Booth that had me in more tears as she embarrassingly explains that she was actually proud of the fact she shed no tears while indentifying remains of 9/11 victims. She was crying now because she understands all because of Booth and how he has shown her how to feel the emotions and not to just control them like she used to.

I hope you liked the episode, I did and I would like to say Happy Veterans Day to all our soldiers. I salute you!
Here is the PSA David Boreanaz did at the end of the episode.
