We get another very brief glimpse of The Mother in this episode of HIMYM. Future Ted recalls the first time he told her he loved her. What brought up this memory? That’d be the events we first saw last week.

By “the events”, I obviously mean Ted telling Robin he loves her right after she and Kevin broke up, and even though we know they can’t wind up together. How do the writers handle that? Pretty well, actually.

After a bit of panic, Ted and Robin end up kissing- just before she goes to Moscow for work. Marshall informs Ted that he’s still in love with Robin. Lily, on the other hand, tries tells him they just won’t make it. In the end, she’s right, but her motivation is the bet she and Marshall have over the couple’s future. Also, Barney was in Lily and Marshall’s bed (don’t ask), learning that the two apparently have a sex tape.

Lily tries to set up Ted to fail by suggesting he woo Robin in overly romantic ways that would put her off. Because he’s Ted, they nearly work. Barney reveals the truth at the last moment, but is more concerned with searching for and eventually finding the sex tape. Still, Lily makes us wonder just what’s standing between Ted and Robin. Later, Ted realizes- Robin’s still in love with Barney.

Barney himself doesn’t think this is very likely. Ted saw the rose petals he spread out for Robin, but he didn’t hear the whole story of what happened after their one night stand. Barney insists that he’s over her and all he wants to do now is watch the tape. Lily and Marshall burst in, her encouraging him to watch it, because she said he eventually would, and him trying to stop it. Barney ends up smashing Ted’s VCR.

Having more or less received his friend’s blessing, Ted meets Robin on her return from Moscow. They go on a date much like their very first, and in the end…they realize they aren’t meant to be. Not in 5 years, not when they’re 40- not ever. Marshall, betting in favor of the star-crossed romance, takes one last shot at changing their minds, but eventually convinces Robin to move out of Ted’s apartment instead.

Despite my complaining about how Ted and Robin were supposed to be over years ago, they way in which it was made clear they really were “Over” was surprisingly emotional. Not just in a sad way, though. As Ted says, that part of his life is truly behind him now. And, if the last scene full of yellow umbrellas was any sign, things are only going to be looking up from here. I wasn’t very hopeful the writers would be able to explain everything from last week but, as it turned out, they were.

Next Week: Karma

They had to make the path as clear as possible for Barney and Robin and I think they did.

I enjoyed this episode. And I wasn’t sure I would with the whole Ted/Robin storyline being beaten to death. But, it seems that relationship is officially (and finally) over. So, now Ted can get closer to finding the mother and Robin and Barney can wind up together since Ted will no longer be in the picture.

Did you catch the Conan O’Brien cameo? Re-watch for the scene in the bar when Barney finds out they DO have a tape and runs out of the bar. Standing in the back – by the door – is Conan. 🙂

I heard about the Conan cameo, but completely missed it. And I did not set my DVR to record it either! I’m sure someone will post it online somewhere if they haven’t done so already.

I had totally forgotten about the cameo until I was like “that really tall red-headed man looks like Conan” and realized it was indeed him. Ha!
