Balthazar Getty Leaving Brothers and Sisters

tommy won't be back next season

After the recent departures of Rob Lowe and Emily VanCamp, now comes word that yet another cast member is leaving Brothers & Sisters.

EW’s Michael Ausiello is reporting that Balthazar Getty, who plays Tommy Walker on the ABC drama, is not returning for the show’s fifth season.

Getty, who appeared in fewer episodes this past season, will not be back when the show premieres on Sept. 26 when it will jump ahead a year in time.

Tommy will reportedly be returning to Seattle to be closer to his estranged wife and daughter as a way to explain the character’s absence.

In a convention full of artists and nerds, of course there has to be science. Discovery once again brought the Mythbusters to a packed house at Comic-Con. After the panel, the entire team – Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman, Grant Imahara, Kari Byron and Tory Belleci – answered a few questions about the show that makes science cool for the rest of us.

How long does it take for a myth to be completed?

My So-Called Life – Summer DVD Review – Self-Esteem

my so-called life

My So-Called Life
Self-Esteem

Original Air Date: Nov 17, 1994

This episode is about boundaries – which ones we can’t cross, and which ones we have to learn how to. At Angela’s high school, for instance, there’s a place where the jocks go, and if you’re not one, you don’t go there. Then there’s this boiler room…

The boiler room is where people go to make out – like Jordan and Angela. This is kind of a surprise when you see it, because you’re like, “When did this happen?!” But I think it goes along with a theme in this show that there’s no real reason or trajectory to things sometimes.

DVD Review: Touching Evil

touching evil

Britain puts out some of the most amazing crime dramas I’ve ever seen. One of the best is Touching Evil, which starred British TV mainstay Robson Green (best known as Dr. Tony Hill in the long-running series Wire In The Blood) as DI Dave Creegan. Creegan gets shot in the head, after which he has the uncanny ability to connect with the minds of the bad guys, even as his life falls apart. If it sounds vaguely supernatural it’s not, thankfully. It’s just a good, well-written dark crime drama. For those of you that missed it, Acorn Media has re-released all three series of Touching Evil in one box set.

The Show

Touching Evil has always been one of my favorite crime dramas, and a lot of that has to do with the strong performance of lead actor Robson Green. I’ve seen him in a lot before and since, and he really knows how to dig into a character and carry a show. His Creegan is conflicted, certainly with enough to angst about, but Green’s wry wit keeps him from being the brooding hero in the corner. I’ve heard some disparage the performance of Nicola Walker (Spooks/MI-5) as his partner, Susan Taylor, but she’s serviceable for the part and at least is a decent match for him, even if she doesn’t stand out. In all honesty this isn’t really her show; it’s Green’s, and the rest of us are just along for the ride.

DVD Review: Life on Mars – The Complete Series

life on mars

If all you’ve heard about Life on Mars is that it was a short-lived show on ABC, you’re sadly underinformed. The real Life on Mars was a dazzling, amazingly-cast UK series that “blows the American version out of the water” – not my words but those of Stephen King. Now Acorn Media has released the complete series on DVD. Here’s a look at the release!

The Show

Quite frankly, Life on Mars is one of the best UK series that I’ve ever seen. I remember thinking it was a pretty unique premise, and I’ve been a fan of John Simm ever since I saw him in the political drama State of Play (another UK production with a vastly inferior US remake). The series surpassed all my expectations. Life on Mars is swiftly plotted with a steady but not overbearing mythology, and an ending that is heartbreaking yet appropriate.

Eddie Cibrian Joins Chase

Eddie Cibrian

Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello reports that the former CSI: Miami star will be joining Chase on NBC this fall. Chase is a procedural crime drama that focuses on U.S. Marshals “chasing” criminals in the state of Texas. Chase stars Kelli Giddish as Annie Frost and Cole Hauser as Jimmy Godfrey.

Eddie Cibrian replaced Adam Rodriguez’s character Eric Delko, on CSI: Miami. Rodriguez left the show during the fifth episode of season eight. Cibrian played Officer Jesse Cardoza, whose career started with the Miami-Dade police who then transferred to the LAPD in 1997 and then transferred back. In the season eight episode All Fall Down, the crime lab was poisoned and Jesse Cardoza was among the many victims. Cibrian’s contract was not renewed for the ninth season of CSI: Miami.

Who would have thought that one of the busiest press rooms at Comic-Con would be for a show that’s almost gotten cancelled every season? Chuck fans, that’s who, because we know better.

The quirky spy comedy returned to San Diego, and I had a chance to sit down with show co-creators Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz, as well as co-stars Ryan McPartlin (Devon) and Sarah Lancaster (Ellie) to talk about the upcoming fourth season.

Parks & Recreation Gets Lowe

Rob Lowe (“Brothers & Sisters,” “The West Wing”) will become a new series regular on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” reprising his former guest-starring role as energetic state auditor Chris Traeger when the comedy series returns in mid-season 2010-11.

“I am beyond thrilled that Rob will be joining the cast for more episodes,” said Mike Schur, co-creator and executive producer. “I have truly come to value his fashion sense, grooming habits and workout tips. Also, he is hilarious, and adds a wonderful dimension to the cast. But really, it’s the workout tips.”

Live From New York… It’s 30 Rock

photo: nbc

rockin' it live

NBC announced today that 30 Rock is going live this fall.

According to The Today Show’s website, “…a live episode of the comedy will air Oct. 14 and will be performed twice so that both East and West Coast viewers get to see it that way. NBC executives told the Television Critics Association that 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels were approached about a live episode and were up for the challenge. Fey, the show’s star and creator, is familiar with live TV from her Saturday Night Live days. Michaels created and produces the show.”

My Two Cents: This is a win-win. Not only is half the cast familiar with (and fluent in) live television, but just imagine the brilliance that could happen if Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan ad-lib. This is going to be amazing.

What are your Two Cents?
