The show has always dealt with the inequalities women faced during the 1960’s, especially in the workplace, but this episode explored those issues head on amid the ever-changing times. As women like Peggy, Faye, and Joan find professional success, managing to rise through the ranks in a man’s world, they also continue to experience an inner struggle between what they want in life, and what’s expected of them.
Although they have consciously made sacrifices to get where they are, there is still an underlying fear that they will be perceived as failures for not being able to successfully juggle both a career and a family. Tonight they also received what can be seen as a cautionary tale of how they don’t want their lives to end up. Even in the case of the young Sally Draper, we see the generational differences between women and the choices they were given, and the limitations they had to overcome.
