The Mentalist – Recap & Review – Red Sky at Night

The Mentalist
Red Sky at Night

Original Air Date: Sep 23, 2010.

Liz – Associate Staff Writer
liz@thetwocentscorp.com

As always with our friends Jane and Lisbon, the first ten minutes are jammed with exposition and excitement. A new CBI director, Gale Bertram! A dead chauffeur named Peter Russo! A missing lobbyist, Harvey Dublin! Disdain for the media! Jane psychologically scars a minor character! And he has, according to Lisbon, had a rough summer. Understandable, considering where we last left with Red John so close.

Hightower expresses some concern that Jane is cracking up, although I have to say that “crazy” is not exactly a short drive in any direction. He isn’t interested in working the Dublin case, ostensibly because lingering guilt over Red John’s escape and Kristina Frye’s disappearance. But since Bertram wants him to be there working on it, it’s up to Lisbon to change his mind. She does what Jane himself would probably do in the same place, and lies and emotionally manipulates him into saying yes. Well played, Lisbon. Well played.

Fringe – Recap & Review – Olivia

Fringe
Olivia

Original Air Date: Sep 23, 2010

Rachel – Sr. Managing Editor

If the “Previously on Fringe” didn’t make your brain explode, then you are a better person than I. Seriously. This show makes my head hurt (but in the best possible way). We get the red credits, so this much I know: the Season 3 premiere will take place Over There.

The show opens on a Terminator 2-esque counseling session. Olivia is asked again and again to explain her side of the story to Dr. Anderson (X-File alum Gabrielle Rose). How could she be from an alternate universe if nothing like that exists? It all science fiction, really. And her partners Charlie and Lincoln? Surely, she remembers them? What about her mother? Or her Olympic gold medal in marksmanship? Does she remember any of those? Um, no.

The summer hiatus seems like it gets longer every year, and it’s nice to have some Liz Lemon back in my life. Liz is doing well, considering she’s still dating Matt Damon and there are hopefully no more waffles in her DVD player. Despite her gynecologist’s suicide, things are looking up. She gets a call from Tracy, saying he is looking forward to improving his life, but he hangs up when he realizes she’s not his nutritionist. Oh, Tracy Jordan, I’ve missed you.

Cougar Town – Recap & Review – All Mixed Up

Cougar Town
All Mixed Up

Original Air Date: Sep 22, 2010

Farrah Kaye – Sr. Editor
farrah@thetwocentscorp.com

When summer ended, Cougar Town-gate began…the show was going to undergo a name transformation and come back as “Friends and Neighbors” (get it?) or something more “family friendly.” However, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? So the little show that could stayed with its “controversial” title (that has nothing to do with the plot anymore and we should just be told that our favorite new group of wine-drinking friends live in Cougar, Florida…) when the new fall season began.

Which is where we are now. With Travis heading off to college, Grayson and Jules knee-deep in their relationship and Bobby still in love with his ex-wife, everyone is growing up. So how does our group deal with it? 1) They drink and 2) Jules gets a therapist, in the form of former Friend, Jennifer Aniston. Stunt casting, maybe. But with all the name-changing hoopla, I was okay with this one.

Criminal Minds – Recap & Review – The Longest Night (Season Six Premiere)

Criminal Minds
The Longest Night (Season Six Premiere)

Original Air Date: Sep 22, 2010

JD – Staff Writer
jd@thetwocentscorp.com

So much has happened in Criminal Minds land over the summer. First, there was news that the spin off got the green light, which many fans weren’t happy with. Then the news that AJ Cook’s contract had not been renewed (and that Paget Brewster’s number of episodes were being cut) just blew the reaction to the spin off out of the water.

It sparked a massive fan campaign to keep JJ, and to spare Prentiss from getting shunted to the side. It kind of worked, and it kind of didn’t. JJ is still leaving us, but she got two episodes this season to wrap up, and Prentiss’ episodes were not as drastically cut as it was first reported they would be (though she tweeted that this would be her last season). Fan response to the final decision has been all over the map.

And that’s where we stood coming in to this new season, which made this season’s premiere both highly anticipated by some, and utterly loathed by others, even before it was broadcast. It’s probably part of why Criminal Minds slayed everyone else in the ratings, with over 14 million viewers. I wasn’t sure how I felt just before the show started last night; over the summer I had gone from plain furious at the casting news to deeply saddened by the loss of JJ and the impending loss of Prentiss, but I really want to continue to love my show, and was excited to see it back. So did the season’s premiere leave me with a feeling of hope for the future of Criminal Minds? Read on and find out.

TwoCents & Five Questions With Keri Russell (Running Wilde)

photo: fox

Keri Russell, Actor

Critical darling and fan favorite Keri Russell entranced audiences with her portrayal of Felicity on the WB from 1998-2002. She reminded us of our adoration with her witty and strong-willed character of Jenna in 2007’s indie hit Waitress. Now she’s back starring in her own comedy vehicle, Fox’s Running Wilde, playing the straight-woman Emmy Kadubic to Will Arnett’s self-indulgent Steve Wilde.

I had a chance to talk with Keri during a conference call, where she shared her thoughts on tiny horses, Arrested Development, and her new show (in front of the camera and behind the scenes). Here are some of the highlights:

TheTwoCents: When Kevin Riley (Entertainment President, Fox Broadcasting) was announcing the season, he indicated that Running Wilde had been made knowing that you were interested in doing a comedy this year. Then there was kind of a rush from the different networks and studios trying to get you to do their comedy. Is that how you remember it happening?

The Whole Truth – Recap & Review – Pilot

The Whole Truth

Eboni – TwoCents Reviewer

So here we are at the genesis of another legal drama. Or are we? The last couple of previews for The Whole Truth have touted this show as not just another legal drama. The cast looks interesting enough. How good is it to see Maura Tierney and Rob Morrow back on our screens?

Let’s find out if there are really three sides to a story: the prosecution, the defense and the Whole Truth.

Modern Family – Recap & Review – The Old Wagon

Faye O – Senior Reviewer

Oh wow! This episode of Modern Family was the perfect way to bring in the second season. I personally loved sitting in my living room with Claire, Phil, Hayley, Alex, and Luke. With Jay, Gloria, and Manny. And with Mitchell, Cameron, and Lilly.

They proved to still be hilarious, and proved to still have the basic theme of the show that started just a year ago. Let’s dive right in.

Two Cents & Five Questions with Ben Rappaport, Anisha Nagarajan & Robert Borden (Outsourced)

Outsourced Cast (photo: nbc)

Ben Rappaport, Actor
Anisha Nagarajan, Actress
Robert Borden, Executive Producer

Outsourced is a new show premiering tonight at 9:30ET on NBC. It’s about an American novelty company that closes and all the positions get outsourced to India. Ben Rappaport, in his first television acting job, is the management trainee who gets roped into moving to India to run the call center. Once there, he encounters many different personalities and characters. Anisha Nagarajan, who is no stranger to television, plays a mousey customer service representative. You can barely hear her voice. Which is ironic, since Anisha is an accomplished stage performer. Robert Borden is the Executive Producer for the show and helped develop it loosely based on a movie of the same name. I had to opportunity to participate in a conference call with them about the show.

TheTwoCents: Ben, what made you want to be a part of this show?
