Stabbings, murders, and maimings—oh my! What a busy night it is in Mystic Falls! The vampires are in fine form this evening. While Stefan mortally endangers himself, instead of Elena (is this progress?), Damon reenacts a cringe-worthy scene from The Temple of Doom and Katherine reminds everybody that she’s the boss.

Want to know who goes from being dead sexy to just, well, dead? Read on for the full recap and review!

Cold open: Oscar likes cycling enough to get a Lance Armstrong model bicycle. Michael has to demonstrate how well he can ride, but see he was used to those little wheels on the back that help you balance. The Armstong model doesn’t have those apparently since he crashes and burns in the parking lot.

As part of their training, Seattle Grace’s residents are put in charge; the attending surgeons compete for a million-dollar grant. Can they make it? Will Meredith make it through a brain surgery without Derek. Does Cristina finally step up and get her head back in the game or will the navy scrubs scare her even more? Is Alex going to manage a peds case on his own and will he be able to deal with the tiny human makers.

Relief from the boredom of the night shift comes first in the form of card tricks, and then a dead body. The body of Bill Sutton is in the alleyway, dead of some blunt force trauma. Jane dubs this the Case of the Jilted Jockey, deducing that Sutton is a jockey based on stature and a number of other things, and because he likes the alliteration. Sutton was found to have a note written on a cocktail napkin (“Forgive me”) as well as a ring in his possession. Also entered into evidence: Rigsby’s card, the ace of spades.

Sutton was a jockey for stable owner Cobb Holwell (the eminent Jim Beaver, aka Supernatural‘s Bobby Singer), but only for the past three weeks. Sutton had been out of the riding profession for awhile, but as a friend had known him for years. Jane wanders off (of course) and ends up betting Ellis Barnes, another former jockey, and another man that he can choose the top three horses. And then he does. Oh, snap.

Here’s one you haven’t heard before: Sheldon making fun of Leonard because he doesn’t have a girlfriend.

As if that weren’t insulting enough, Howard’s back with Bernadette and Raj found out he can date deaf girls he doesn’t have to talk to, so Leonard is the ONLY one without female companionship. Even Stuart has a girlfriend now. Leonard is lamenting his loneliness when Amy Farrah Fowler butts in via webcam, and suggests he try meeting someone “in a bar or tavern.” Sheldon tells her that would only work if Leonard had alpha male traits such as height and athletic skills.

Jack Donaghy is having a streak of brilliance, since he’s done everything perfectly for 24 hours. This is a feat he calls Reaganing, and it’s only been done by three others: Lee Iacocca, Jack Welch, and Saddam Hussein. And John Casey, who Reagans even in his sleep, but that’s a different show.

Refusing to back down from a challenge, no matter how daunting, Jack drives Liz to Newark Airport so she can meet Carol.

Garcia is back in her regular role this week as tech goddess, but when she spoke in the round table room at the beginning of the episode, it threw me. Part of me just plain expected JJ to be the one standing in front of the screen, giving the team the info on the case. I thought, “That’s not JJ’s voice… oh.” It shouldn’t have seemed so foreign all of a sudden, given this is the third episode we’ve had without JJ, but I guess it’s going to take a while before it feels normal.

Anyway, this week the team tracks a killer who’s targeting families, killing the children and husbands in front of the mother, and saving her for the last, and most brutal, death of all. Mare Winningham guest stars as one of the mothers, and does an excellent job.

Oh yeah, and Morgan’s new BFF Ellie makes a surprise visit.

Laurie and Smith have broken up but how is Laurie doing? Is she broken-hearted or has she moved on? As for Jules, with Travis off at college (a whole 20 minutes away…), what new non-connecting storylines will she have? And for goodness sakes, will Ellie ever get a job?

And random question: When will Penny Can become an Olympic sport? 🙂
