Degrassi Comes To TheTwoCents!

photo: ctv

Degrassi (formerly Degrassi: The Next Generation) is a unique entity amongst television shows. It’s in its tenth season, which alone is a milestone that few shows reach. Now stop and consider this, it’s the fourth series in a franchise that dates back to 1979. First came The Kids of Degrassi Street, followed by Degrassi Junior High, and then Degrassi High, all of which have their own rabid fan base (including notable guest stars Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes).

But the underlying amazement truly comes when you realize it’s primarily a show about teenagers played by actual teenagers. Sure a few age out of the characters (cough, Chantay, cough), but it’s a refreshingly young, realistic looking cast.

Picking up where we left off last week, Ali tells both teams that only one person’s weight loss will count for each team this week. And the OTHER team gets to decide who it’s going to be.

I think the obvious choices are Elizabeth and Jessica, but that’s just me. Read on to see who they chose and who gets sent home.

Modern Family – Recap & Review – Halloween

Back in the 90’s, one sitcom ruled Halloween and that was the blue collar world of the Conners, “Roseanne.” Well, here in 2010, we have a new ruler for the newish millennium with the Dunphys! And that’s fine by Claire, as she is the new queen of the spooky day!

I apparently lived in a dull neighborhood growing up. Everyone had candy, sure, but nobody opened their home as a haunted house to scare us children. We ducked flying eggs and shaving cream, but never did a grown man dressed as a scarecrow frighten me from the bushes… I guess that’s a good thing! Let’s see how the folks at Modern Family do it, shall we?

The promo said “There’s never been a more terrifying Glee event than The Rocky Horror Glee Show.” And I wondered if it would be great or the promo was right. Reviews were coming in to the west coast mixed and the music was not hitting number one as it usually does.

And as for me, Rocky Horror always brings me back to 1995 when I first saw it and all my awkward teenage-year dances doing the Time Warp. So what would happen with this episode? Read and find out.

ABC just ordered another five episodes of this show- a nice sign of faith, considering it hasn’t been doing as well as it could in the ratings. Hopefully emotionally poignant episodes like this one will help get more people to watch, because I think it deserves a chance.

The two cases this week involve a murder that leaves behind a little girl trapped in the foster system and a janitor who was stabbed to death on the campus of the college he worked for.

MyTwoCents – Returning Fall Shows So Far

what's on my dvr

A little while ago I did a listing of the new fall shows I’m watching on TV and where they rank. Well, of course my DVR is full of returning shows as well. Some remained on the list while others have fallen off the DVR.

I’ll be upfront about this, I don’t watch every show. No one has that kind of time, but I watch a lot of them. We’re going to look at these shows on a DVR basis. How fast do I watch? The following shows are being judged on a KPonTV scale of 1-5, 5 being the best and 1 being, well, not the best. Let’s start at the bottom and work our way up, shall we?

After your done reading, I’ll be curious where you stand. Share your TwoCents in the comments below.

Two Cents & Five Questions with Sarah Hyland (Modern Family)

Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland, Actress

Sarah Hyland got her start at the age of five in the Howard Stern movie, Private Parts. She’s had parts in several other movies. Her first starring foray into television was playing Brooke Shield’s daughter on the short-lived Lipstick Jungle. She also has appeared on Broadway, as a young Jackie O in Grey Gardens. But now she’s best known for playing Haley Dunphy on the Emmy winning ABC family comedy, Modern Family. She was kind enough to answer some questions for me during her busy filming schedule about the show and how she feels about winning the Emmy.

The Two Cents: What drew you to the character of Haley Dunphy?

Well, another episode about lying. We be might sensing a theme, no? The Powells are all lying to each other. George lies to Stephanie. Katie also lies to Stephanie but for an entirely different reason. Daphne doesn’t do much lying but thinks a friend is lying to her.

But wait! It’s not all lying. There’s a powered-villain this week! And it’s a cool power, too.
