TheTwoCents Staff’s 2011 Emmy Picks

When looking at the Emmy ballot it is always very tough to make a choice.

You sit there and think to yourself – do I choose who I WANT to win or who the rational side of me THINKS will actually win?

We decided not to make the distinction.

On the following pages, you will see the winners according to the votes of our TwoCents family in two different categories. One for each cent.

Voting With Our Brains
We watch many of the shows. We skip many too. We DVR, DVD, BluRay, OnDemand, Hulu and iTunes shows. We read blogs, websites, magazines and newspapers about the world of TV.

Amidst all of this data, we like to consider ourselves more or less “in the know” about the world of television and the characters/actors within.

With all this information at our disposal we can put aside our personal preferences and truly vote for who be believe the Emmy voters will give the award to.

Voting With Our Hearts
For every show we DVR to watch later, we all have shows that we cancel all appointments for and HAVE to watch live.

We live and die with the characters. We fall in love and break up with them. We root for AND against them. We welcome new ones into our lives and bid farewell to dear departed friends.

Why? Because we LOVE good television. And with that love, we know who we would personally want to see win the award. They may not be the media darling, the best critically-acclaimed show, or have any chance to actually win, but we love them and that makes them winners to us!

Tonight we bid adieu to the inaugural summer season of one of television’s newest hit shows. When we first started watching, we thought it would be the season finale, but ABC Family gave us an early gift with the promise of another twenty-two episodes in this first season.

We’ve gotten to know the Kennish and Vasquez families and a handful of their inner circle. But tonight that circle is dramatically increased by one. So let’s see how this last episode for a while plays out, shall we?

Can you believe that we have to wait until Summer 2012 to find out what happens to the characters on Falling Skies? It took me a while to warm up to this show but now I’m totally hooked.

In fact, hooked enough to even go with the “Encounters of a Third Kind” cliffhanger, a deliberate (?) marker that the show this produced by Steven Spielberg. But more about the ending later.

We start in London in the late 1800’s, where a man goes poof. Fast forward to 1962 in Ohio where a birdwatcher sees a mysterious pile of wreckage and also gets poofed. Then Pittsburgh in the present when a billboard guy goes bye bye. Cue Pete eating his way through the quickly spoiling banana cream pie. Myka and Pete are on the case of the disappearing dude.

Myka has an idea, to call in HG Wells, which Pete is way against but the Regents have spoken. Pete hasn’t met the hologram of HG Wells, and he freaks a little.

Many thanks to Emily for covering for me while I was in a land of mucho sand and terrible internet connections. Things moved along quickly this episode – was anyone else surprised that we got to the vampire vs. witch sunmaggedon showdown so fast? I had thought that would be something we’d see in the season finale. Elsewhere in Bon Temps, Eric and Sookie have sexy time, Marnie plays host to one pissed off Spanish witch, Tara makes new allies, Tommy continues to suck in every conceivable way, and Bill comes up with a (terrible) plan.

Entourage – Recap & Review – One Last Shot

Entourage
One Last Shot

I’ve moved on from the Bobby Flay snafu of last week thanks to learning that the Entourage “powers that be” imagine in their world, Flay is single. It goes against everything I believe in with regards to this show, but in the previews for next week, they make up for it.

Tonight brings another chapter of WOAH to the show. Dice is causing trouble, Turtle finds out what Alex is really up to, Mark Cuban makes an appearance, Ari goes on a date, Vince goes to a dark place and Scott wears a tight shirt. So basically, it’s your typical day with the boys.

Every week, the staff at TheTwoCents will be posting their top picks for viewing. They won’t always be the top shows of the week, but the programs that each writer is most looking forward to checking out that week.

So, set your DVRs, watch, and then come back here to discuss how the picks worked out for you.

#1 Monday, Aug 8 – 9:00pm ET – ABC Family – Switched At Birth (The Homecoming)
Summer finale alert!! Bay is shocked to meet her biological father (Gilles Marini) at her school’s art show, and then she introduces him to her parents and Daphne. Meanwhile, Daphne opens up to Emmett regarding her feelings about him, forcing him to make a difficult decision. He’d better choose Bay, because they are my favorite tv couple since Buffy & Angel!!

Emmett & Daphne? NOOOO!!!!

In Plain Sight – Recap & Review – Something Borrowed, Something Blew Up

It’s the season finale all! We’ve been through a lot this season and I can’t believe we are at the end already! In a season all about change, it definitely lived up to that with Mary’s unplanned pregnancy, Brandi moving on with Peter, and Marshall finding Abigail. Everyone seemed to be changing for the better, but as we’ve learned, things don’t always go according to plan and this episode was all about that.

The title really says it all and we got some twists and turns and it can’t be a finale without some gunfire and the return of a witness we love to hate.
