Unless you’ve been under a rock or stuck in a ditch (in which case I hope you’re doing better now), you’ve seen promos or the sneak-peek first episode of NBC’s new drama
SMASH, premiering this Monday, February 6, on NBC.
SMASH is a close-up look at all the glitz and glamour of a Broadway production – and all the deviousness and dirt that often go into making one. Not only are celebs knocking down the door to be part of it (the show’s producers have said they’ve tapped Nick Jonas and Bernadette Peters for roles, and they’ve also received interest from stage legend Patti Lupone), but the show’s regular cast features a number of screen veterans (Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston) and fresh faces (Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty). And one of the indispensable members of the cast is Brian d’Arcy James. James is no stranger to television, appearing in shows like
Rescue Me and
Person of Interest, but he’s made quite a mark on the stage, as he’s been nominated for Tony awards for his roles in
Sweet Smell of Success and
Shrek the Musical. And if that’s not enough, he’s won an Obie Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Drama Desk Award. And he’s a pretty cool guy, to boot! We caught up with him while he was promoting
SMASH in Chicago and got his take on TV, the theater, and his
SMASH character, Frank Houston.
TTC: Why would a fellow like you, with such a strong musical theater background, want to jump into television? Was there something specific about this project that attracted you to it?
