So tonight was quite possibly the last episode of A Gifted Man we’ll ever see, with the ratings for this season being on the low end for a CBS show on a Friday night. While I prefer serialized storytelling over procedural stories, I record a couple CBS procedurals every week and usually check out the new ones every season. When I saw the trailer for this show, I thought it might fill the Medium sized hole in my heart for a supernatural style drama. While I was in love with the pilot of this show (mostly due to the amazing direction by Jonathan Demme), most of the subsequent episodes have left a lot to be desired.
I’m fine with procedurals doing their cases of the week and having a little serialization/mythology tagged in every episode, but to keep me interested in the show, the writers have to show a little drama or momentum in the storytelling. For the most part, I thought A Gifted Man was quite boring and lifeless. While there were moments that showed the show could have been more interesting and unique, I thought most of the episodes showed a lot of wasted potential. I know the show has some fans (and good for you if you enjoy the show), but sadly, I’m not one of them. Read on for the season finale recap.
