“Who cares about live TV?” asks Jack Donaghy, as 30 Rock kicks off its second live episode ever!

These live shows are always tricky to pull off. Anything could go wrong at the drop of a hat, especially when the show is deviating from its usual format. However, when you have a cast and crew of 30 Rock’s caliber, you’re in for nothing short of an energetic and entertaining show. Tonight’s episode was no different, and some familiar faces from the comedy world (and a certain face from music royalty) stopped by to liven things up.

Actual medicine took the furthest back seat it’s every taken this hour, as personal relationships were front and center with nearly all of our doctors. The oral boards, after months of prep, are finally here for our five residents.

But, as these are the doctors of Seattle Grace Mercy West, nothing runs smoothly. From ill-advised sexual encounters to vomiting to patient care, distractions abound in plenty to keep us on our toes as to who will pass or fail their exams. But, with all the buildup to exam day, there’s one major part we still don’t know…

As someone clueless about pop culture, I hate to use the phrase “unless you’ve been living under a rock”, but that’s about the only reason I can come up with why you wouldn’t know about the film The Avengers.

Why do I mention this? Because this week’s episode is as close as SVU gets to a tie-in. By that, I mean a group of self-proclaimed vigilante heroes does more harm than good. Because what else would you expect?

This episode comes down to one thing: can Troy win immunity? If he can, he’ll stay around for another few days. If he can’t, it’s pretty unlikely given how together the women have been thus far.

Secondarily, this is the time during the game when reward challenges involve the challenge winner picking a couple people to go with her or him on the challenge. That can often reveal people’s standing in the game and lead to some paranoia and upset feelings.

Tensions run high (though when don’t they?) in the Grayson household as the solid prosecution case is coming to a close in Daniel’s trial. Now Victoria entertains every desperate idea she can in her efforts to get him acquitted. Especially after Conrad makes her artist lover leave town, denying her the only comfort she had.

Meanwhile Nolan and Emily have been working double-time to keep Jack out of town following a fake Amanda-trail, only to find him back when baby brother gets called to the witness stand. Who will end up going down for the murder in the end?

There were several deviations from the normal routine this week. No mentor (where was Jimmy Iovine?) and a medley from the whole group to start the night (with Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian Mays).

Did we really need a shake up? It didn’t hurt at this stage in the game as we’re only a month to the finale.

Glee tribute episodes are always a bit of a misfire, mainly because the show doesn’t seem able to hit that sweet spot between character development and song choice. This week’s ode to Whitney was no exception. It was more of a campy soap opera romp through relationship drama and loss, leveraged by a teacher who can’t quite seem to adhere to his own lesson plan.

As New Directions belt out Whitney’s hits a relationship is tested by text messaging, teenagers realize there is life outside of high school and a not entirely unexpected couple come to life.
