My Two Cents: Will Community Survive Without Dan Harmon?

my two cents

According to reports, Dan Harmon, show-runner and creator of Community has been fired from his own show. Between this and the new Friday night time slot, I believe this is the kiss of death for my favorite show.

We all know the quirky sitcom’s ratings have never been very good and it’s the loyal and vocal fan base that kept the show alive for three seasons.  So I want to know why NBC went ahead with the renewal if they knew they were going to part with Harmon.  I have to wonder if NBC even wants the show to succeed.  Maybe they just want to strangle it to death.  If that’s the case, well done.  *cue slow clap*

Mad Men
Christmas Waltz

Original Air Date: May 20, 2012

Ryan O – Associate Staff Writer

This episode is the story of people not getting what they want — also the story of the whole season. On the other hand, some people get things they aren’t expecting. What we get that’s unexpected is a tremendous scene between Don and Joan.

Oh, and by the end of the episode, Don is back and engaged at work.

Supernatural has delivered a few spectacular cliffhangers in its run, and this one did too. Not only did it tie up the loose ends of the Leviathan storyline, but it also veered the show off in a completely different (albeit vaguely familiar) direction.

In this hour the Winchesters gear up to take on Dick while also saying goodbye to an old friend.

“It shall not be death, but a sleep of a hundred years, into which the princess shall fall.”

Things are getting messy in Portland, Grimm – thanks to Nick, the reluctant Grimm. Just when he finally accepts his ability and develops a groove using those talents to solve crimes, baggage from his Grimm-ness emerges to haunt Nick and his friends. Introduction to Finality

The group is eating lunch and studying in the cafeteria. Looks like with the appropriate dean they are reinstated. Annie is worried about Abed. Since Troy’s been gone he won’t even play in the Dreamatorium.  Hmm, that is worrisome.

Dean Pelton comes in wearing a construction worker uniform to tell them that Subway’s out and Shirley’s Sandwiches is in. He just needs someone to sign on this one dotted line as owner of the shop. Pierce and Shirley argue over which of them should sign.

Community – Recap & Review – The First Chang Dynasty

The First Chang Dynasty

Original Air Date: May 17, 2012

shannon@thetwocentscorp.com

We open on a Greendale propaganda promo funded by Chang. The group tell the cop that brought Abed back the other time that this is a fake dean in the video and that the real dean is being held captive somewhere. He clearly doesn’t believe them. Annie says they’ll get proof it’s a doppledeaner. The cop says he’ll throw them in jail if they get within 50 feet of Greendale.

So Greendale is now a red state. Chang is throwing a huge birthday party for himself and it’s eating up all the funds. People are dropping out of the school like flies. The group plans to infiltrate the party. Troy meets with someone from Heating and Air who gives him the low down on where Dean Pelton is and how to get to him. There are a bunch of guards and locks and the only key is around Chang’s neck. Heating and Air will help but they want Troy in exchange. The group doesn’t want to lose him so everyone but Pierce has to plan an elaborate heist.

Pierce gets a call from his father’s lawyer calling him to a warehouse with his seven closest friends. He brought six but who’s counting. LeVar Burton was a maybe. Pierce’s father left him a multiplayer video game. The group is turned into 8-bit computer likenesses. There’s an intro and everything. This. Is. Awesome.

The game is called “Intro to the Center of Hawthorne”. First thing that happens, is that Annie is attacked by some baddies and then murdered by Jeff. Pierce is old, of course, and has no idea how to control his little guy. See, back in the 80s, Pierce tried to convince his dad that video games, rather than moist towelettes were the way to go. Elder Hawthorne disagreed and this is his way of showing his son how dumb he was.

So, we have our final two. Did you guess right? Did the best two go through?

The evening started with a group number of “Got To Get You in My Life,” which – like most group numbers – seemed like a giant waste of time.

The Ford video seemed even more of a filler, but for the first time in a while, I liked the concept – a silent movie. But with just Joshua and Jessica doing it, the result seemed flat. Once again, Phillip had bowed out – was it because of his health?
