ABC Family Greenlights Three Additional Pilots

ABC Family, the millennial-skewing network, has greenlit three additional pilots to add to its production slate — “Terminales,” a one hour drama adapted from a successful Televisa series, and two new comedies, “Phys Ed” and “Continuing Fred.” The three pilots will go into production this fall along with the previously announced drama pilots “The Fosters” (working title), from executive producer Jennifer Lopez, and “Socio,” from executive producer Gavin Polone.

“ABC Family is synonymous with groundbreaking dramas, and this summer we found additional strength with our comedy lineup. These pilots will further our strength in both areas and add to our existing slate,” said Kate Juergens, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Development, ABC Family. “In fact, over the past few years, the network launched the #1 new basic cable series in target demos with ‘Pretty Little Liars’ in Summer 2010 and ‘Switched at Birth’ in Summer 2011, and launched the #1 new cable comedy of Summer 2012 with ‘Baby Daddy.’ It’s a trend we are working to continue.”

There’s a cyborg on the loose who goes by the name of Gunslinger. He’s relentless, and just before he kills a man the man asks if he’s the last one. The Gunslinger replies that no, there is one more he still has to kill: The Doctor.

Meanwhile, The Doctor, Amy and Rory ignore the Keep Out sign and enter A Town Called Mercy. The local residents kidnap the Doctor as soon as he introduces himself and they determine he’s an alien Doctor. They give him to the Gunslinger, but the town marshal Isaac (Ben Browder) brings The Doctor and co. back, taking them to the marshal’s station, where The Doctor realizes that the person in the cells (Adrian Scarborough) is actually the alien Doctor the Gunslinger is looking for.

I went into this with low expectations and at least one half(ish) of the show kept me interested. It’s not a secret that Glee has just become a mockery of itself since Season Two. So when I heard about the new direction (pun intended) RIB wanted to steer the show towards I was expecting a self-indulgent implosion.

Thankfully you’ll be glad to hear that the powers that be, have, unexpectedly delivered a premiere that even a cynical, jaded fan like me enjoyed (one half mostly, but we’ll get to that below).

The second half of the X Factor premiere felt like leftovers from the first night. Once again we saw auditions from San Francisco and Providence, R.I. The judges kept talking about finding just one talent, but they found several.

SAN FRANCISCO

I’m not liking these scripted bits a bit. We first meet 16-year-old Johnny Maxwell as he’s pulling up to the audition with his mother. And they just happen to wear microphones as we listen to Mom’s pep talk.

Turns out Johnny Maxwell’s original song, “All These People,” wowed the judges. He had a little pitch problems when he started, but when on pitch he had beautiful tone. Simon liked the rap sections better, but he got four yeses.

“Resentment is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” Malachy McCourt

Drew is back and Jenna’s concerned that Ryan hasn’t responded to their wedding invitation. He doesn’t want to go, for obvious reasons, and he’s not appreciating Wilfred’s commentary. Wilfred’s excited about it though, he gets to be ring bearer. He wants Ryan to stop moping about Amanda and be happy – which is the same thing as being gay – and a choice – which is why they mean the same thing. Love it!

Doesn’t every show wish it could start with an introduction by boy band One Direction? It helps if your show’s producer is Simon Cowell, who gave them third place on British X Factor and signed them to a record deal.

Speaking of Simon, in the season opener he appeared much more relaxed than I’ve ever seen him. He teased new judge Demi Lovato about her interest in one of the boys in One Direction. He gave advice to new judges Demi and Britney Spears.
