Modern Family
Yard Sale

Original Air Date: Oct 31, 2012

The family is together for a yard sale at Jay’s house, much to Jay’s discontent – he doesn’t like strangers walking around his property. He’s doing this for Manny and Luke – UNICEF needs donations and the class with the most $$ gets a pizza party. American altruism at work – you donate to get benefits for yourself (teaching our tax system to the young).

Phil is deathly afraid of motorcycles but to look manly, agrees to take Jay’s bike for a test drive. He freaks out but slowly begins to feel the freedom – until he stops atop a hill. Phil falls and is pinned down by the bike. He starts a phone video diary of his half hour ordeal ending with him pulling out a pocket knife to cut off his…pants. Wish he had his shants.

Thanks to Mother Nature, It’s a bit of a subdued Halloween for much of the country. And SVU doesn’t really do holiday episodes anyway. Then again, if the main feeling you want for October 31st is “creepy”, nearly every installment of the series could fit.

This episode opens with the arrival of Amanda’s sister, who foreshadows enough trouble before we even get to the case. A teenage girl goes to a party with her older sister. She meets a guy who seems nice and, expectedly, winds up in the trunk of a car.

A Petty Officer is murdered whilst driving an expensive Ferrari, but the case takes a detour for Gibbs when he sees that LJ’s namesake pawned his Medal of Honor.

Gibbs is still an enigma after all these years. Could the original Leroy Jethro really be as much of a legend as Gibbs has turned out to be? Quite simply: yes, when he’s played by Billy Dee Williams.

Since yesterday’s episode was airing the day before Halloween, the gang does a quick Halloween gag in the opening scene. Everyone gets ready to go out dressed as a member of the Jackson family on a marionette bar. The idea was better in concept than execution though, as the group can’t seem to get out of Brad & Jane’s apartment. They decide to give up and drink some beer.

The show decides to continue its serialized format this year by continuing the Alex/Dave apartment storyline. Alex & Dave meet with a real estate agent and decide to buy an apartment. Meanwhile, Jane helps Penny buy a car and Max helps Brad figure out his new Saturday schedule. Will Alex and Dave sign a lease? Read on for tonight’s recap.

I must first give a shout out to Chris Gorham on his directorial debut and say you did a brilliant job! Chris finally was able to show off some of his skills behind the camera as well as in front of it. He has a keen eye for details and many of his shots proved it, but I am mostly grateful for not having any scenes where the camera is on the other side of a glass door…oh how I hate those blurry scenes!

I can best describe this episode as a happy family that has now been shattered by many problems and is trying to deal with them and get back on track. I see Joan and Arthur as mom & dad and Auggie and Annie as kid 1 & 2. Mom and dad are arguing and having marital issues and the kids are either rebelling or having girlfriend issues. Let’s get started….

New Girl – Recap & Review – Halloween

New Girl
Halloween

Original Air Date: Oct 30, 2012

It’s the Halloween episode! I can’t wait to see how this holiday – dedicated to all things creepy and scary – is going to be slaughtered by hilarity. Take Jess’s new job, for example. She’s working as a zombie at a haunted house. Her costume is kind of dorky – Schmidt calls it “undead Woody Allen” – and I can’t imagine her scaring anyone.

She’s still seeing Sam, by the way. And she’s just found out that he’s a pediatrician. This can’t be good for her don’t know/don’t care sex friend status. Schmidt, meanwhile, is still super jealous of Cece’s new boyfriend. In fact, it’s all bad on the love front. Winston is in a rut with his gf, and Nick’s old freshman college crush is in town. And in his bed way too quickly.

Everyone decides to go to the last night of the haunted house, and while Winston and Shelby’s costumes don’t match, Schmidt’s and Cece’s do. Even Robbie points it out.
