The group sits around the table looking furtively at each other. Dean says they can’t just sit in awkward silence anymore and they need to get it out in the open. We don’t know what “it” is yet. For funsies, Dean has made puppets of all of them so they can use those to express themselves.
Cut to puppet study group. Puppet Abed and Troy play study group bingo because the group talks about the same things all the time. They’re in a rut. Jeff thinks they need a break from Greendale. Annie suggest an adventure. Oh, and now it’s musical puppets as they break out in song, Avenue Q style. In their song, they decide to take a ride in a hot air balloon. Sara Bareilles is the balloon guide and as they’re singing and loading up, they lose the tether before Sara can hop in. Now the group is in a runaway hot air balloon. Pierce starts “helping” and everything goes wonky. It’s Pierce, he makes everything worse.
Somehow, they successfully land the balloon but now they’re stuck in the forest. They run into Jason Alexander with fake hair. He says he used to go to Greendale too and now he’s a Mountain Man. They sing a song about how they can start over in the woods. Mountain Jason feeds them some kind of hallucinogenic berries and they all start tripping and telling each other their secrets. Shirley tells them that she accidentally left her kids all night in the grocery store while she chased down a guy she thought was Andre with another woman. Back in the study room, everyone is shocked to hear this story because they have no recollection of it from that night. In fact, no one remembers any of the secrets they told that night. They’ve all been so afraid of having their secrets out there that they’ve been awkward with each other. But since no one remembers, they’re in the clear. Except for Shirley, who’s the only one with her secret out there.
Jeff suggests that they all share their secrets via puppet to make Shirley feel better. Jeff’s secret is that he met the perfect woman but she has a kid. He blew off the kid’s ball game, making him no better than his father. Britta is an activist who doesn’t vote except for “The Voice”, Annie let a teacher give her a foot rub for all the answers to a test. Troy caused the Greendale fire in 2003 while burning an ant hill.
The reassure each other that they don’t think less of anyone for their secret and they go on their merry way. Nobody wanted to hear Dean’s secret and he complains about solving everyone else’s problems only to go home alone. Then he hears Jeff’s voice. It’s puppet Jeff giving Dean a suggestive eyebrow waggle. Yikes.
I enjoyed this episode quite a lot. I like Sara Bareilles so that was fun seeing her. I really would love to see more of the bloopers they showed at the end. I hope they’ll have that online. I do love a good gag reel. Overall, I felt that the puppets were pretty consistent with the show’s history. The pacing was okay, but there weren’t as many great lines as there have been in the past. I still enjoyed it. Any thoughts? Leave em in the comments!
