After last week’s emotional farewell to J.R. Ewing, I wondered where the show was headed. With J.R.’s final and master plan yet to be fully revealed, would the other character’s pick up the torch and legacy of one of television’s greatest villains? J.R. Ewing was more than just dastardly, he did everything with a wink and a swagger that enthralled viewers, both new and old.

In a word… yes. While nobody will ever “be” J.R., the show had a renewed energy tonight even with the reemergence of the methane drinking game. This hour had sex, blackmail, drinking, deception, and (best of all) a cliffhanger! If the rest of the season keeps up this pace and energy, I should hope it’s a lock for a third season!

Ewings United: Bobby, Christopher, and John Ross have formed an unholy trinity that brings out darker shades of the wholesome Ewings. Bobby won’t yet reveal what was in J.R.’s final letter, but the three come together for the planning of how to keep Cliff Barnes and Harris Ryland at bay. Christopher vows to find out if his mother (original Pamela) is alive, because she would own a portion of Barnes Global. And Bobby agrees to restart drilling for oil on Southfork to keep the money flowing in.

J.R.’s Will: To Bobby, he leaves his boot collection, provided Bobby take better care of them than he does his own. To (alcoholic) Gary, he leaves his prized bottle of Scotch. To Christopher, he leaves his copy of The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli, more or less to teach him to grow a pair. Assuming Ann did not cause his death, he leaves her his dove hunting gun. Sue Ellen gets his metaphorical heart, as the only woman he ever loved, plus half the oil under SouthFork. John Ross gets the other half, as well as the acknowledgement that he is the best man J.R. ever knew. Miss Ellie left behind a codicil in her own will, that upon J.R.’s death, half of SouthFork ownership goes to John Ross.

Sue Ellen: Sue Ellen initially steps up her plan to woo Gary, but as soon as Bobby starts drilling on SouthFork she drops the plan like a hot potato. When Gary calls her out on her drinking, which she denies (lie!), she pushes him away and calls Valene (Joan Van Ark) to town under the guise of Gary missing her. Gary is cold to Valene, who takes it out on Sue Ellen, calling her several versions of bitchy. And even though Sue Ellen is keeping him at arm’s length, he still tries to be there for her. She vows to quit drinking on her own (cause that always works… snark), but tells Gary to go to Valene, not losing opportunities like she did with J.R.

Cliff and Ryland: The two form an unholy alliance to bring down the Ewings, with Cliff promising Harris enough money to buy his mother out of Ryland Transport. First Cliff tries to underbid Christopher’s deal with the DCT by offering a cheaper price on his oil than Christopher has on methane (drink!). That doesn’t work, but more on that below. Then Harris, who owned the stolen goods trucks that Drew was driving with his arrest, has his henchman Roy Vickers do a little recognizance work on Drew. When Harris finds out Drew and Emma (who’s also still sleeping with John Ross) have gone on a date, he decides to make Drew the fall guy for his plan. Under the threat of killing Elena, former military man Drew is tasked with making and planting a bomb on Christopher’s methane (drink!) rig, but more on that below. Judith tells Harris, who refuses to apologize for his outburst last episode, that she’s going back to London, freezing his money, and firing him from the company business. When he goes to stop her from leaving, she takes a Donna Martin-worthy tumble down the stairs.

Christopher/John Ross: When Christopher finds out that his DCT deal is in jeopardy, his dark side finally emerges, showing more personality than he ever has before. John Ross comes to see DCT lady Allison Jones (played by Annie Wersching) under the guise of getting her to flip the Ewing Energies deal from methane (drink!) to oil. They flirtatiously discuss running (“come out heard and power my way to the finish line”- subtle…) and of course end up in bed together. Post-coitus, they step onto a balcony where Bum is waiting to take blackmail photos… which Christopher blackmails Allison with to get the methane (drink!) deal back on track. The only thing standing in the way of deal is getting the whole DCT to visit the drilling rig to see it in action. Christopher is proud of having done his shadiest work, but Elena is rather disgusted, informing him that she’s going in to business with Drew.

Boom!: With all of the core characters on the bomb-strapped rig, nothing could go wrong, right? The deal is OK’d, and Christopher, John Ross, and a very pregnant Pamela all shake hands. Anne steps away (bathroom?). Roy Vickers views the action via a tablet, and calls Cliff with concerns that his daughter is on the rig. Cliff takes a deep breathe, purses his lips, but gives Roy the go ahead. So Roy pushes the buttons on the old-school cell phone and the rig goes… BOOM!

Who will live? My guess… everyone important. Who will die? My guess… some random person from the DCT and one or both of Pamela’s unborn children. History (season one cliffhanger from Original Dallas) had J.R. cause Pam to lose Bobby’s baby, so now I could see Cliff being responsible for Pamela losing hers. I’m spoiler-free, so this is only speculation. What do you think?

But…man… this episode definitely felt more alive and invigorated than the show has in weeks. There was so much plotting and forward momentum that I can’t wait until next Monday! Don’t you agree?

  1. Debby Francis says:

anybody know what was the name of the song playing while Drew was making the bomb????

    • John Michael says:

Oh man somebody please answer Debby’s question! I’ve been searching all over as well and cannot come up with anything.

  2. GetItTogether says:

The fact that Mrs. Ellie left something in her will after JR’s death absolutely blew me away. I didn’t see that coming in any way, shape or form. It was pretty obvious that Bobby didn’t know how to take the news that John Ross now owns half of SouthFork. I watched the preview clip for the next episode and it looks like the axis of evil – Harris Ryland and Cliff Barnes – is hatching its own plan to bring down the Ewings just as JR predicted. I really can’t wait until next week because it’s just getting too good not to watch.
