Cooperative Escapism in Familial Relations
Original Air Date: Mar 7, 2013

The group talks about their Thanksgiving plans and how bummed they are to have to spend the holiday with their families. Shirley invites everyone to her place and everyone’s on board except Jeff. He’s going to his father’s house that day. Britta feels vindicated and invites herself to Jeff’s dad’s as Jeff’s therapist. Jeff makes it clear he doesn’t want her there. Good call, dude.
Everyone but Jeff shows up at Shirley’s (Abed brings a 2-year-old package of 7 layer Mexican dip as a hostess gift, how lovely) while Jeff shows up at his dad’s door, gets cold feet and takes off. Britta and Jeff talk on the phone, and she tells him that he needs to come back because she’s already sitting on the elder Winger’s couch.
The rest of the group is not having a good time at Shirley’s so they hide out in the garage. It’s really stressful and Abed thinks they need to stage a prison break. He channels “The Shawshank Redemption”. Pierce blows his plan to pretend to break a hip to get out of there. Annie, Troy, and Abed decide to actually get sick by eating the 7 layer dip sitting in the trash. Shirley catches them before they eat the dip and apologizes for inviting them. Shirley said she invited them as a buffer because when Andre’s not around Shirley is the butt of her family’s jokes. Abed, Annie, and Troy feel terrible for not seeing how bad a time Shirley was having.
Jeff turns around and knocks on his dad’s door. He and his dad lay some ground rules and things are going fine until Willy Jr (Adam DeVine) freaks out at Jeff and Willy Sr bonding. See, Willy Jr is Jeff’s half brother and he’s about to have a mental breakdown. Jeff and Willy Sr talk about Jeff who seems really well-adjusted and successful. Willy Sr suggest that his leaving made Jeff who he is today and that he isn’t a total crap parent after all. Jeff is having none of it. He drives off and discovers that Willy Jr has smuggled himself in the back seat of the car. Wally Jr wants to run away but Jeff wants to use this opportunity to tell his dad how terrible a father he really is. Jeff turns the car around and gives his dad a piece of his mind by telling him how broken is.
Back at school, Jeff sets up a Thanksgiving dinner in the study room for the group as a surprise and it’s lovely. He wants them to know that family counts, even if it’s only the family you choose. He even invites the Dean. How nice. While they eat, Abed daydreams of doing “Die Hard” for Christmas. As you do.
We finally got some closure with Jeff and his dad which is nice as that’s been going on for some time. Other than that, I find the whole episode rather forgettable. The show’s still off-kilter for me, I think. Your thoughts? Leave them in the comments!
