How do we know that Idol really wants a female winner this year? There are more guys than girls. Is the quality better? I’m not so sure.
ROUND ONE: Solos
Yes: Angela Miller (one to watch), Victoria Acosta (mariachi), Rachel Hale (happiest contestant/country), Janelle Arthur (country), Candace Glover, Isabelle (no last name), Kez Ban (this early favorite who was getting a cold), Brianna Oakley (16), Melinda Ademi and Alicia Felciano were shown moving forward.
No: Mariah Pulice (Anorexia), Ashley Smith, Sarah Defucio, and Megan Miller (auditioned on crutches) all had to say good-bye.
At the end of this round, 72 went on to the next round.
ROUND TWO: Groups
Just like with the guys, the producers picked groups and then contestants chose from a list 20 songs to sing with the band. This round started out with Randy in studio, so there were only three judges. What impressed me the most was that the group round wasn’t as bad as in past. A few tiffs, but nothing with screaming matches or worse.
The Swagettes: Melinda Ademi, Candace Glover, Kamaria Ousley, Denise Jackson
Tight harmony! Great job. All go through.
Raisin’ Cain: All Country—Morgan Leigh Boberg, Lauren Mink, Brandy Hotard, one other, beautiful harmonies and solos. All go through
Almost Famous: Savannah Votion, Lizz Weiss, Daysia Hall, J’Leigh Chauvin – only Daysia went through and her fellow group members verbally attack her. Bitter, bitter, bitter.
The Dramatics: Janel Stinney, Kriss Mincey, Cristael Clack, and another. They got a standing ovation from Nicki, but Keith didn’t agree. Janel had real issues in fitting in (her mental health seemed a bit fragile). All go through.
Shuba Vedula , Sarina-joi Crowe and Aubrey Cleland also moved to the next round.
Urban Hue: Seretha Guinn (auditioned with her daughter in a tutu), Tenna Torres, Kiara Lanier, and another. Nicki called it painful. The judges’ decision wasn’t unanimous. Seretha is only one going home.
Poo-snaps: Erin Christine, Zoanette Johnson (National Anthem), Lauren Bettes and Isabelle. Lauren is only one sent home.
Handsome Women: Shira Gavrielov, Alisha Dixon, Liz Bills (barefoot and kind of spacey), Courtney Calle. Liz is the one they keep.
4 You: Stephanie Schmel, Alex Delaney, Kalli Therinae, Holly Miller. They changed their song in the next morning, and put lyrics on their hands. Stephanie and Holly are through.
Dolly Chicks: Britnee Kellogg, Kree Harrison, Brandy Nelly, Haley Davis. All country. Nicki gave Haley a lot of grief for going to bed early. Haley, Kree and Britnee are all through to the next round.
The Misfits: Kez Ban, Breanna Steer, Angela Miller, Janelle Arthur. The other three had trouble retaining Kez, who is weirder than I thought. Nicki gives them a standing ovation. They all are going through.
Thursday, valentines for 40 of the contestants, but the rest will get a one-way ticket back home.
Do you think Kez Ban should have gotten a pass because of a cold? Did you expect bigger, cattier battles? Did you spot a potential female winner? Give us your TwoCents…
