The cases of the week deal with a man with cystic fibrosis who doesn’t know if he can live anymore, and a psychic who predicts that she’ll die in the hospital within 24 hours. Read on for this week’s recap!
The first case of the week deals with a 24 year old named Henry. Henry has cystic fibrosis and has dealt with a host of other illnesses in his life, including his current illness pneumonia. He was originally given 6 months to live and has been on the waiting list for new lungs. After an organ donor dies in the hospital, Emily tells Henry’s parents that they found lungs. While they throw a small party for him in his room, Henry mentions that he if he ever got new lungs, he’d learn how to surf. The doctors think they’ve found something in Henry’s lymph nodes during his surgery, which wouldn’t make him a candidate for the lung surgery. Micah says they need to finish the surgery so they give Henry the lungs.
After the surgery, Henry learns that he has cancer. Micah tells him it’ll be an uphill battle, which leads Henry to wonder if he should fight anymore. Henry tells Emily that he’s been waiting his whole life to do things and wonders if it’s in the cards, but then says that his family needs him to fight and he doesn’t want them wondering if he had more time. Emily tells him it’s his life and to do what he wants. Later, Henry’s parents tell Emily that he wants to try chemo. Cassandra talks to the parents about her brother, who also had cystic fibrosis and died when he was 14. She says he spent his last 6 months in the hospital and hints that if her family should have asked him what he wanted to do instead. At the end of the episode, Henry tells the docs that he’s going to Hawaii, and was surprised when his parents asked him what he wanted to do.
The second case dealt with a woman named Gail Duroux. Gail comes in with swollen legs and tells Emily that she’s psychic. She also tells Emily that her romance house is about to be initiated. After Gail learns she might have a UTI, she deals some tarot cards and says she’s going to die in the hospital sometime in the next 24 hours. Gail’s son comes to the hospital because of a voicemail he left her that said she was dying. When he learns about the cards, he tells Emily she uses them to manipulate people and leaves. Later, Gail learns that she has endocarditis, which is a bacterial infection that travels to the heart. She asks Emily to give her son a letter in case she doesn’t make it out. An allergic reaction causes Gail’s BP to drop during her surgery, but she makes it out ok. Emily tells Gail’s son she made it, so he starts to head out. He mentions that he won’t let her near his fiancé because she once said one of his relationships wouldn’t’ last, causing him to be neurotic about it and break them up. Emily tells him that isn’t just a psychic parent thing and hands him his mom’s note. Gail’s son visits her and she tells him she just wanted to protect him. He tells her she was so focused on the future that she wasn’t present.
After Emily awakens from a dream where Will admits that he was acting jealous and he wants her, Emily tells Tyra that Will seemed jealous about her date with Scott. She also wants to prove her theory that if she flirts with someone else, he’ll react. Tyra tells Emily she needs to learn how to flirt, so Tyra decides to give Emily a front row seat to her & Molly flirting. Tyra tells Emily it’s time for her to start flirting, so Emily tries her new skills on Dr. Putnam. It works very well, which causes Will to tell her to be careful. Putnam asks Emily out. She tells him it’s not a good idea and denies flirting with him. Putnam thinks she’s playing a game and tells her he likes a good chase.
Putnam tries to ask Emily out again, so she tells him she can’t because she’s building a bookcase. After Putnam says he’ll help, Will tells him he already told Emily he’d help out. Tyra tells Emily to try the final technique at her place, or her & Will are DOA. After Emily comes back with some beer and sandwiches, she finds Will sleeping on the couch. She wakes him up and he asks if he can crash there. Emily thinks her hypothesis has been proven wrong. Later, Emily meets Will on the hospital roof and he asks her not to tell Cassandra that he crashed at her place. He tells Emily that Cassandra thinks he’s jealous and asks if they can keep this between them. Emily finally has her proof that Will likes her.
Dr. Aquino, who was a fellow intern with Micah, is asking to come back to work at the hospital after an incident where he performed an unauthorized procedure and left work after throwing a fit. Gina keeps on blocking him from returning, leaving Micah to think that it’s personal. Towards the end of the episode, Gina has Aquino answer a couple questions, and then welcomes him back to the hospital. We also find out that she and Aquino slept together. She tells him she’s married and it was a mistake.
