Forgiveness is a wide spread theme on tonight’s episode. Will Bay forgive Emmett? Will John forgive Bay? Will Daphne or Regina forgive Angelo? Will anyone forgive Simone?
And although we don’t get any firm apology acceptances, we do make quite the head-way on quite a few fronts. This hour was really more about set-up for future conversations and plots. So let’s cover what happened and where we think it will go.
Daphne/Angelo: Angelo is determined to get closer to Daphne, but she is just as determined to keep him at arm’s length. He gifts with her with a literal tree of forgiveness, but she awkwardly excuses herself. He continues to make small talk throughout the hour, but it isn’t until he injures his hand with a nail gun, that the two are forced to spend time together. She takes him to the hospital, anxious to leave the whole time. He tries to bond over her impressive Highlight’s word jumble skills, but she reminds him she’s sixteen, not eight. After the nurse on duty asks if she’s his daughter, and Daphne says no, the silence is palpable between the two. After a while, he gives her the OK to leave, but she gets in her dig that she’s not leaving because it’s “hard to stick it out.” He finally lets his tentative wall down and goes off, admitting he made a mistake, but he wants to move beyond it. Later, Daphne makes a small peace offering, giving him work gloves to protect against further injury. And I have to say, it might be about time. We, as an audience, can only watch Daphne sulk for so long before we get tired of it.
Regina/Angelo: Kathryn confronts Angelo about the blonde nurse photos, and we get a name, LeAnn Crowley. Angelo admits he didn’t want Regina to know about his fling with the pretty nurse. And when Kathryn tells her we see why. It seems Regina has a pretty intense jealousy and insecurity streak where Angelo is concerned, but to the best of our knowledge, he never cheated on her. She tries to snap at him about Leann, but he points out that the two of them always come back together, including matching hand injuries. Do you think a Regina and Angelo pairing is in the cards?
Regina/Simone: Regina catches Simone outside a liquor store. After reaming out the guy buying liquor for a minor, she has a heart to heart with the struggling Simone. Simone is upset because she has no friends, nobody will forgive her, and she hates herself. Regina advises her that it’s not other people’s forgiveness she needs, but her own. Although the girls will certainly not approve, Regina agrees to be there for Simone. Where do you see Simone fitting in the big picture of the Kennish-Vasquez world?
Toby/Kathryn: Kathryn is worried that Toby has forsaken his music for all things video game. So she does a little subterfuge and brings him to his old church music group, New Dawn. Toby is annoyed, which escalates to angry when he’s cornered intol telling Kathryn why he and Simone really broke up. He refuses to take the stage, so Kathryn goes up and sings “Hard Times Come Again No More.” And while not amazing, Lea Thompson does have a pleasant voice. Toby relents and accompanies his mother, singing along. Afterwards, he’s flirted with by a cute blonde, Nikki Papagus. And while Toby seems rather agnostic in his views, Nikki is clearly quite devout in her religious beliefs. Is Toby about to become a man of faith? Religion hasn’t played a large part in the show, and I’m not really enthused about the potential of the storyline. What do you think?
Emmett: Emmett is taking part in a motorcycle show at the Kennish car wash. He’s quickly flirted with by Robin Swiller, a cute, blonde, deaf girl from Odessa. They discuss their bikes and Daphne notices a connection, but Emmett is clearly still hung up on Bay. Daphne begs Bay not to give Emmett false hope if there is no hope, saying that Emmett will hold onto the tiniest sliver of trying to get Bay back. Later, Emmett tries to talk to Bay (after her conversation with John, more on that in a bit), but when Robin approaches, Bay takes leave and tells Emmett to stay, clearly implying he should talk with Robin. What did you think of Robin? Do you see her as Emmett’s future or just an interloper on his path back to Bay?
Bay/John: After having painted over her own graffiti, Bay is surprised to see some other work turn up on the car wash. She is anguished when John declares it all the work of thugs, viewing it as defacement of his property. She tries to get him to see it as art, but he isn’t buying it. Later, while tagging with Zarra (in broad daylight), they’re interrupted by the police. But Bay’s driver’s license name of Kennish earns them a free pass. Zarra is incensed to learn Bay lied about her identity. Bay takes Emmett’s advice, and admits to John that the original tag was hers and that it wasn’t the first time she’d done it. John is confused, admitting he doesn’t feel as if he knows her at all. Bay later makes amends with Zarra, but still opts to explain the name discrepancy via adoption rather than the switch-story.
Maybe it’s a generation gap, but I have a hard time siding with Bay on her “art.” It’s someone’s, in this case, her father’s business, and they have a right to expect it to look as they left it the night before. What do you think? Is street art the high art Bay makes it out to be? Or do you view it as graffiti and defacement? And where is Bay’s friendship with Zarra really headed?

Robin says she’s from Odessa which is in Texas which is 12 hours away from KC. That is so not happening. Plus someone tweeted Ashley and according to Ashley she’s only there for one episode.
I forgot her real name, so it’s Ashley! About the episode: That was sad with the interaction between Bay and John. Toby’s attitude, etc. There were other things I thought about as well. Last, Happy 33rd Birthday to Justin Bruening (Jeff)!
I found a Tweet where Ashley Fiolek (Robin) indicated she may be back!
There is an Odessa in Missouri though.
You’re right! According to Google Maps, it’s about 45 minutes away from Kansas City.
I love right close by it in Blue Springs. We are all suburbs of Kansas City on both sides of state lines.
@AshleyFiolek – How many episodes should we expect to see Robin in? Is she going to be some big love interest for someone?
@mistyautumn86 – Just 1. Maybe 😉
Aug 15 & the reply on the 16th respectively
I’ll focus on the maybe 🙂 There’s always room for more people than the three semi-related teens and Emmett!
I still believe they are endgame either way.
Anyone know the actress who played Nikki The church girl interested in Toby? She looks very familiar!
Lizzy Weiss (Creator, SAB) is so helpful!!!!
yup her name is Cassi Thomson, she played “Nikki”‘s daughter on Big Love.
“Where is Bay’s friendship with Zarra really headed.” I’ve been waiting for that comment! Let’s just acknowledge the elephant in the room: Bay and Zarra completely give off romantic vibes since the beginning. I don’t know if it’s the actresses (who plays Zarra) style to portray intense, adhering characters, but her how she acts with Bay really catches me off guard. I hope they don’t get together because I am team Bemmett. Although I never hold my breath since this show goes through love interests fairly quickly.
Finally! Daphne is becoming tolerable again. I find that the writers do this ironic job of switching the likability between the daughters. If I like Bay, I don’t like Daphne; vice versa, and here I am again, loathing Bay. Her character bewilders me. I feel like BOTH of these girls have been through so much, and instead of making them more open minded and understanding of situations, they become more ignorant. How does Bay seriously not see John’s side? I love Graffiti, but is it a criminal act? It certainly can be. In this case, it definitely is. And don’t get me started on what she did to Angelo last week. I currently like Daphne, but it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have her faults too. I just hope by the end of this season both of them get a clue.
Okay now I know a lot of people have this whole lesbian affair going on in their head but I have a different take. I mean sure it’s possible and I have no problems with same sex relationships. I just don’t think it will happen with them. This however is how I feel.
Their relationship starts with Bay admiring her as an artist which makes her a bit of a fan girl. In that first scene she seems to think that Medusa/Zarra is this really deep and intuitive artist. What if Bay finds out that it’s just the opposite? What if as their relationship goes on Bay finds out that this other street artist isn’t as great as she fantasized her to be? Once that idealization is proven false they could end up parting on some very dark and disappointed terms.
Then adding to that in this most recent episode notice how Bay thinks that Zarra is way deeper than she really is when she was questioning her about the tentacles?? When really it turned out the answer was as simple as her hair. That’s one of my theories about why they will end so badly is right now Bay is Medusa fan girl still thinking that she’s this deep intuitive artist. Only she’ll find out that art is just something she does that it’s not the same for her as it is for Bay. Then next episode with the tagger from the promo we see a darker side to Zarra that feeds into their differences. Zarra definitely has a violent side and a kind of rage that Bay doesn’t have. If Bay had that kind of rage Simone wouldn’t have got off so easy. So when they part Bay is going to be horribly disillusioned by her idol.
I mean without a doubt Zarra is the cool older girl with no parents that are around and does whatever she wants and Bay is attracted to that especially in the vulnerable sate she’s in. Zarra seems to lead a no holds barred kind of life and I don’t see this friendship ending well let alone romantically.
I would be stand-offish and unforgiving towards Angelo if I were Daphne. I mean, come on? You only get one chance to raise your kids. Angelo walks out on Daphne (and Regina), when Daphne was a toddler, because she was deaf, (which he admits to her face), and only shows up again when she’s all grown up, practically an adult. Not only does he expect her to forgive him and give him a chance, he actually tries to make her feel guilty for being stand-offish with him. (not to mention the fact that when the gang was warming up to Angelo previously, he bolted off to Italy – only to return to escape charges)
and on the Angelo front, he didn’t just have a one night stand with the nurse. You don’t take cute couple-y photographs with a one night stand.
Honestly, I just can’t buy that Angelo has somehow transformed overnight and now is going to be a good dad. Fitting his character, he should bolt again. I could buy Regina letting her guard down and letting herself fall for him again, because that’s what she’s consistantly done – as her mom said, she’s addicted to him and/or he’s her weakness.
I’m not a fan of the Toby-Nikki plot line either, and hope the show doesn’t go all 7th Heaven. But I thought the mom-Toby subplot was very believable – Kathyrn being a typical mom and Toby being a typical sulky teenager.
I’m still curious about the Simone subplot and hope to see some depth of character. It would be more believable for me if Simone has had pre-existing alcohol issues, rather than trying to buy that it all started when she lost the basketball game and slept with Emmett.
Too soon to tell what I think of possible new love interest Robin, as there is still definitely a connection and concern between Bay and Emmett.
I thought Bay was an idiot to tag her dad’s place, like she wants to get caught. Until it was revealed that she really wanted to show off her art, and that kind of rebellious side, to her dad and win his approval – especially after he made that comment in the last episode basically belittling her art (that she “could be something” without it). So I guess it made sense, in not so bright teenager logic, for her to tag her dad’s place, seeking her real dad’s approval. While I can see graffitti as valid art and protest, it’s hard to buy it from Bay. Bay claimed she does it because it’s a way to speak out when she has no other way. She’s a privileged (basically) white kid from a wealthy upper class family. She’s spoiled, attending a private school, has a new car and an art studio. She’s not a poor orphan living out on the streets struggling to get by. So it is a little difficult to see her as having real angst. Granted, she can have angst, melodrama, suburban ennui – but I could foresee her clashing with someone, such as Zarra, who might know some real tragedy, and who might just see Bay as a pretty little poser.
In summation, I think Daphne shouldn’t warm up to Angelo. I think Bay should start protesting some more serious or global causes (albeit a little too young, perhaps, for political protesting?), evolving her art rebellion from quaint selb-absorbed suburban malaise to real more hard-core issues. and I think it might be an interesting twist to have Regina go off the wagon, perhaps triggered by Simone…just throwing that out there.
