Troy has an aptitude for plumbing and one of the plumbing professors (maybe? I’m not sure. I think his name is Jerry) wants him to come unclog a toilet in the men’s room at 3 just to see if he “feels something”. Troy agrees to get the guy off his back.

A couple of flamboyantly gay students has Pierce sign their package of Hawthorne Wipes. Turns out the wipes are mentioned in a song by an Urbana Champaign, a singer in drag. The wipes have become some kind of gay icon.  The song is pretty catchy.

Pierce wants to sue and makes whole bunch of gay slurs. The next day, he struts in the library in his Urbana Champaign tshirt and calls everyone “bitches” because “that’s gay for friend”. Yeah, he’s on board because sales have gone way up. In fact, Pierce is hosting the school’s first ever Gay Bash. Heh.

Troy unclogs the toilet and thinks it’s pretty great. Another plumber comes in and wants to steal Troy away. Jerry tells Troy that people who will try to use his gift for evil. The heating and air dean, Dean Laybourne, has kidnapped Troy and a few other students for an initiation. Troy is some kind of genius and Laybourne takes him to the room that sets the temp for room temp. Dean L. tells him that if he joins the heating and air brotherhood he’s in it for life. He gives him 24 hours to decide. Jerry tells Troy that the heating and air folks are elitists and he’s better off in plumbing, which is seen as plebian by the heating and ac guys. Troy asks Abed for help and Abed advises him to do whatever makes him happiest.

Pierce is helping to decorate for the Gay Bash when his father shows up. His father is even more racist than Pierce. Also, Pierce’s full name is Piercinald. Pierce cancels the bash because his dad wants him to but Jeff puts it back on. Pierce is angry until the whole room starts chanting his name. His dad shows up and Pierce shuns the gay community to their face and then fakes a heart attack. Jeff tells Pierce’s dad off and dad fakes a heart attack but he really wasn’t faking. Jeff inherits his ivory wig, by the way. At the funeral, Dean L. shows up and demands Troy’s answer. Troy says he’s just going to watch TV with Abed because that would make him happiest. Dean L. is determined to recruit Troy.

There was some great banter at the beginning of the episode during the gay slur part. I love Troy’s comment about why Pierce wants the gays pants off. Perfectly delivered line. The back and forth between Abed and Troy where Abed was pretending to be Troy was also pretty perfect. I think the relationship between those two is my favorite on this show. What did you think about this episode? Leave a comment!

  1. Nina still in Anchorage says:

Shirley managed to offend me again, with her “choice to be gay” comment, but what really irked me was that Britta didn’t call her out. I respect that Yvonne is Christian, but the show’s writers need to not propagate untruths.

  2. Shannon says:

I understand what you’re saying but I think Shirley is meant to be offensive at time. Just like Pierce is racist, Shirley is a fundie Bible beater. I’m pretty sure that whatever Shirley says in regards to religion is meant to be comical and not taken seriously.
