Last week’s episode finally clued the police in to the existence of the Doomsday Killer. This week’s episode sets them on the trail. But as many of us know, the journey towards a destination isn’t always the most exciting part of a trip.

But for all the snail-pacing of this week’s outing, we were blessedly (pun intended) missing the presence of LaGuerta. And guess what, she was not missed one bit. But all of our other key players were in attendance this week, so let’s check in on what they were up to…

Dexter is the only one who noticed Travis’s presence at the locust-angel crime scene. After finding out the deceased worked near a local art museum, Dexter heads over there to see if he can find out who the mystery man is. Via the “worst-docent-ever”, Dexter ends up spotting Travis in an art restorative film. Why Dexter-of-no-faith, I do believe you were lead there. He quickly identifies Travis Marshall and sets out to do a little breaking/entering at his home. After snooping through a book of Gellar’s, he finds Travis’s leather bound bible which has numbers cut out that match the ones found in the victims.

Dexter surprises Travis from the back seat of his car with a rope around his neck. But when he tells Travis that he’s going to die for killing all those people, Travis says Gellar did all the killings. Travis also tells him that he doesn’t talk to God, Gellar does. Dexter expounds that Gellar is leading him to the dark side, but lets him go. Travis calls in “sick” to Gellar’s bible-killing session for the evening. I’ve seen some theories floating around that Gellar is dead and is a figment of Travis’s mind. I’m not sure on that yet, what do you think?

Earlier, we saw Gellar declare that the “Whore of Babylon” would be the next killing. Travis spots Gellar’s photo in the paper, so Gellar opts to lay low for a while. When Travis fails to abduct a drunken party goer, Gellar simply accelerates (via pushing down on Travis’s leg) so Travis mows one down with his car. They leave her date and throw her in the trunk of the car. Do you think nobody noticing Gellar adds to the “he doesn’t exist” theory?

Brother Sam and Dexter continued their bonding over a six pack. Dexter confided about seeing his mother murdered. Sam thinks that Harrison is the little bit of light in Dexter’s darkness that keeps him from the darkside. Sadly, by hour’s end Dexter’s new buddy is gunned down by an unseen assailant in his body shop. We’re not sure yet if he survives, but someone is certainly going on Dexter’s kill list.
Quinn and Batista visit the University of Tallahassee where Gellar used to work. They meet his former teaching assistant and lover, Professor Clarissa Porter (played by Mariana Klaveno). She is convinced of Gellar’s innocence, but very receptive to Quinn’s flirting. The two spend the evening drinking and cavorting, so after $80, Quinn is able to cross “college professor” off his bucket list. The next morning, when Batista arrives to pick of Quinn, he finds a box labeled “Gellar.” Inside is a leather bound book called “Alpha-Omega of Enesserette” which contains drawings of all of the crime scenes thus far. The good professor seems to finally realize that her former lover may be culpable after all.

Elsewhere, Deb and Jamie (Harrison’s nanny) spar when Deb leaves some crime scene photos out that Harrison views. After finally having her court-mandated therapy session for the restaurant shooting, Deb realizes she needs her own place. Luckily, a murder-suicide crime scene has just opened up for rent. After some rent haggling, Deb has her new place.

With roller-derby Ryan gone, Masuka brings on his newest intern, Louis. He uses the newbie’s computer technology to try and track down the missing Ice Truck Killer prosthetic. They’re unable to find the hand, but Louis wipes out all record of the sale, boosts Masuka’s credit rating, improves his CPU, and installs a porn scrubber. Masuka looks deservedly happy with his newest hire.

So that was that for this episode, definitely more of a journey than a destination. I’m not ready to write this season off as a dud just yet, but I really hope they pick up the pacing pretty soon. Although I’m enjoying the Dexter-Brother Sam friendship, our killers feel too isolated from the action as of yet. And I’m really stunned that Dexter just let Travis walk. I’ll bet (like with Trinity) he’ll be kicking himself for that one pretty soon.

I haven’t heard that theory yet that “Gellar” is just a figment of Travis’s imagination, but I have to say it fits. Erin, the waitress from last week, never even acknowledged Gellar was at the table at the diner. Did Travis kill Gellar, with his playboy brunette ways? Then steal the artifact, and became Gellar without knowing it?

I am loving Mos Def as Brother Sam. Whether Dexter comes out with a little more faith, or not, this dialog has made me MOS happy!

While watching the episode, Alyssa thinks that the guy that was baptized, “Nick”, I think was the one who shot Brother Sam. I don’t think so, as usually the first few months as a new Christian, a person is on “fire” for the holy spirit. It’s only later that life catches up with a person.. but this is hollywood!

I don’t know who came up with the Gellar’s dead theory but I think they might be right. That would explain why he seemed so nonchalant when Travis spotted his pic on the newspaper’s front page. And it fits with the brunette professor’s defence of Gellar’s character ( though that’s hardly conclusive )
