Can you believe it’s already the mid-way point of the competition? Everyone better start amping up their routines because the judges will start to get really picky from this point on.

You’d never guess by all the neon lights all over the ballroom that it’s 80s night. After the mediocre movie night last week, here’s hoping 80s night isn’t as horrible as it sounds.

Hope Solo & Maksim Chmerkovskiy – Tango
24 (8, 8, 8 )
Len told Hope she was too willowy and that she had no strength but he liked the aggression and attack. Bruno told her she got the 80s super bitch down to a T. Carrie Ann said she was in character but that she attacked the dance too hard and her lines got awkward.
Maks just looked like he was flinging her around the ballroom and she was just hanging on for dear life. She got all the steps but there wasn’t much graceful about it. She just cannot pull off sexy.

Carson Kressley & Anna Trebunskaya – Jive
19 (6, 6, 7)
Bruno called it loopier than Looney Tunes – a crowning achievement in madness. Carrie Ann said it was definitely fun but that she didn’t see much technique anywhere. Len said it wasn’t good enough.
There were not enough jive elements to this dance. This is where Carson’s lack of coordination REALLY hurt him. This was probably his worst dance.

Nancy Grace & Tristan McManus – Rumba
22 (7, 7, 8 )
Carrie Ann said it was appropriate but she wants to see real passion – the dances are feeling on the drab side. Len thought it was simple but very effective – overall a good job. Bruno said she pitched it exactly right and it was one of her best performances.
No hip action and she’s not very graceful. Inside of moving her arms sexily she was sort of flapping them around. That being said, it was better than her Paso last week.

J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff – Samba
28 (9, 9, 10)
Len said he is an example for any man on how they should dance the samba. Bruno called him a loin shattering sex machine. Carrie Ann called it “muy caliente” (and some other unrepeatable compliments).
It was sharp, precise and he can move his hips!!! Total Brazilian party – he rocked it.

Robert Kardashian & Cheryl Burke – Rumba
25 (9, 8, 8 )
Bruno said he’s starting to see Rob the Heartthrob – very sentimental and a great performance. Carrie Ann called it strong and sexy and told him he was totally in control of the woman. Len said he pulled off being masculine and that he took command of the dance.
He worked all week on trying to bring the sexy, but I didn’t find it sexy at all. I thought it was kind of boring. He had good technique but I wasn’t as impressed as the judges. Carrie Ann considered that equal to J.R.? No way.

Chaz Bono & Lacey Schwimmer – Samba
21 (7, 7, 7)
Carrie Ann said it was the most dancing she’s seen him do and that it was great. Len called it a gallant effort telling him he got the feel of the dance even though the technique was here and there. Bruno was impressed by his bounce.
He really came out of his shell and was shaking it all over the dance floor. It was his best dance so far and one of the few that I’ve actually liked. I thought his score was a little low – I think he deserved at least one 8.

David Arquette & Kym Johnson – Tango
25 (8, 9, 8 )
Len said it had a great 80s feel and was fantastic. Bruno made a lot of positive comments none of which I could understand. Carrie Ann said it was fun and that his hold is improving but he needs to work on his musicality.
He has improved greatly. His technique is much better and he looks so much more confident. This was definitely his best dance.

Ricki Lake & Derek Hough – Fox Trot
24 (8, 8, 8 )
Bruno told her she went off rhythm when the broke hold to do the Roger Rabbit (the 2nd time) and it didn’t gel with the dance. Carrie Ann complimented how well they work together as a team. Len thought the Roger Rabbit move in the middle of the fox trot was inappropriate and said that it wasn’t her best dance but it wasn’t her worst.
I agree that the Roger Rabbit move didn’t fit – plus they messed it up both times. I also was disappointed early in the dance when she just stood there and wiggled a bit while Derek was bopping around. She’s good enough to be moving at every moment.

Big shakeup in the leader board this week. J.R. is at the top and David and Rob both scored higher than Ricki. I didn’t think I would see that happen. Carson is at the bottom again. With two very competent competitors already sent packing you’ve got to figure everyone is a bit nervous.

What’d you all think of the performances by the Bangles? I didn’t think they sounded too good (and I didn’t like the way they sang Manic Monday). Leave me your two cents on tonight’s performance!
