We waited a week wondering what kind of menace could have come to Greendale to wreck havoc. A week has passed since Pierce went phantom on us having dispatched a hired gun.
It has been a weak couple of sentences hinting towards one of the themes of this week’s episode, but only takes one scene to solidify that the number of references is going to be epic. So let’s join the alliance in progress.
Luke and Han Troy and Abed are seeking out the dean when some troopers bust in opening fire. Our heroes take cover and learn who the mastermind behind the whole war is – City College and Dean Spreck.
Yep, Greendale’s most hated rival has tricked the student body into desecrating their own campus. The episode is going to be a challenge trying to identify all the references revealed. It would be nice to get a final Star Wars tally if nothing else.
The remaining survivors try to combine forces, but it isn’t until Magnitude sacrifices himself on a paint mine (he gets pop popped) that they do. Jeff addresses Spreck usurping what leadership Troy had established. And at this time, Pierce proposes an alliance with City College to avoid elimination.
Spreck gloats as his force wipes out rebels but they still have a trick or two. Jeff and Troy battle for control through competing plans of attack. Jeff wants the group to secure the Gatling gun, while Troy wants to trap troopers in the library and set off sprinklers rigged with paint. Annie insists both plans will be more effective executed together.
By the way, Abed has assumed the role of Han. Annie is looking like the Leia of the group with all that taking charge and we all know what happened with those two.
Both plans are being put into action. Inspirational speeches are being delivered, while people are going out in a blaze of glory (or not so much in Jeff’s case). Troy’s elimination is the best for my money (though I’m gonna need help remembering what it was a reference of).
Shirley is only left to execute Troy’s plan; Britta is only left from Jeff’s raid. They both charge the Gatling gun and succeed. Shirley looks to be the champ until two hidden troops shoot her in the back. As the two celebrate the win, a third arrives only to shoot them. It’s their mom’s lover, I mean Pierce. He claims victory and demands the price be given to Greendale.
The study group is regrouped back at their table thinking ahead to next semester when Pierce enters to get his day planner. He leaves them. He points out why he is the way he is and leaves them. Yay, right?…
What a sobering cliffhanger for the season, right? It was so easy to despise Pierce with each new petty ploy to get attention, but if he doesn’t come back what will we do? Can you name a movie/TV reference beside Star Wars? And notice some characters show up from a certain Florida based sitcom? Let me know and I’ll see ya in the fall. Roll credits.

Alison Brie looks nice even covered in orange paint.
The camera work as Britta and Shirley charged the Gatling gun was fantastic.
“‘Pop’ what? ‘POP’ WHAT? WHAT WAS HE TRYING TO TELL US?” Oh, Troy 😀
There’s a scene from an episode of Home Movies like the one where Shirley runs out as the sprinklers start but I know that Home Movies is referencing the same thing and I don’t know what it is. Die Hard?
Ah yes Miss Brie… I am trying so hard to figure out movies with sieges, like maybe Toy Soldiers, or a heist gone wrong movie.
Man, oh man. I loved this episode… as always.
One question: what the heck was with that ceiling piece falling at the very end of the very last scene? Am I thick? What am I missing?!
I think that was either a complete accident or that things are about to come caving in for favorite study buddies.
