Hey all! I’m back from my hiatus and it’s my turn to take a crack at these wacky Degrassi kids.

If you haven’t been keeping up, Holly J has a mysterious illness, Alli ran away from her hiding place at Johnny’s and Wes is trying to break the world record for jumping on a pogo stick.

And if that wasn’t enough goodness, there will be a season 11, starting this summer with another Boiling Point-type season, airing daily. With that, here we go!

Story#1: Holly J is still self-medicating her unknown condition. She’s a hot mess. During a presentation in school, she falls down and hits her head on a desk so she goes to the hospital. Alone. The doctor tells her they need to run tests but she has a presentation to give later in the day so she sneaks out. Plus, she’s Holly J so she can’t stop for a second. At her presentation, things start off okay but she all the sudden can’t control her bladder, right there, in front of everyone. Scared out of her mind, she calls her mom to come take her to the hospital. Winds up she had strep and let it get so out of control her kidneys have begun to shut down. What’s next for her? Dialysis. Woah.

Verdict: I didn’t see kidney failure coming for Holly J. Then again, Degrassi has needed to “go there” for a while. We haven’t seen them tackle anything super serious since Spinner’s cancer battle, and even then it was pretty quick and he medicated with marijuana. Holly J always has everything together, is on top of her stuff. So I’m really interested in seeing how this medical situation is going to sideline her perfect life. On the plus side, Sav brings her flowers and holds her hand. Aw.

Story#2: Alli makes her way to the bus stop to go to Vancouver. Naïve as ever, she asks a passerby how to be a runaway. Too bad he’s a scumbag and steals her bag! She’s left with nothing, except her other bag. She makes her way back to Johnny’s, where she finds Sav waiting for her. However, he’s not there to take her back to their parent’s house but just to lend support. And asks if she’s going to run away again to let him know. No hug, no sweet reunion. But Alli can tell he cares. She decides to go home and everyone agrees to start fresh, including going to therapy and even take a new family picture, the new and improved family they are.

Verdict: I’m not as much as a hater of Alli as my co-recapper is and I enjoyed the conclusion of this storyline. Plus, we got to see Johnny one more time. Alli is determined to get a fresh start, although I am still baffled as to why her HPV scare was in her school file! Gah. I’m glad she’s home and I’m hoping family therapy will cool their dad down. Just looking at him makes me want to run away. I also hope Alli goes back to Degrassi. Claire needs to get back to having someone to talk to, since the whole Jenna-stole-her-boyfriend thing.

Story#3: Since Wes can’t get a car or a girlfriend before his 16th birthday, which is just days away, he is still set on completing the pogo stick challenge. The whole school (well, some of the lower level kids) comes out to support him, including a pretty little girl named Hanna (or Hannah, choose a spelling). Wes is smitten, especially when she knows all about springs and JPM (that’s Jumps Per Minute, not Juan Pablo Montoya like I first thought…). When he’s just moments from breaking the record, he waves to her and falls off the stick, spraining both wrists. But no worries! She comes to visit him and says she was looking forward to holding his hand to celebrate. He asks her on a date and she says yes! Score! He gets a girl just two days before his birthday.

Verdict: I love Wes. I love all three Tenners. So I was happy to see something positive come out of this ridiculous pogo stick storyline. Although we didn’t see Dave’s girlfriend at all, which is weird. Now maybe we can see them go on double dates. With a season 11 coming, we need to get to know the grade 10 kids a bit better anyway!

Next week, Princess Fi is back, fresh out of rehab and facing her abuser in court. Will she stay sober?

I don’t hate Alli per se, I was just amazed by the overwhelming screen time she’s had this year. Not shocked it all worked out.

I’m curious to see how/if the dialysis story continues. Holly J is served well by a more mature storyline.

All I could think of with Wes is… What’s a fifteen year old boy going to do when he has two sprained wrists??? 😉

I just want to say I’m really really interest in the Holly J storyline. The EXACT same thing happened to my uncle in 1980: Got strep, didn’t treat it, dialysis, and three kidneys and ten years later he was dead. It’s a rare happening, but it was always a concerned subject in our house: Sore throats are serious. It feels good to have the story told, to see it on TV…weird though!
PS I know this is an older article, I’m just glad they kept up with the storyline so far. They could have mentioned dialysis once and dropped it, but they kept going!
