Starting out this season we have some very interesting characters that were introduced to the show. We start to dig into Raylan’s past this season it seems as though the more that we dig into this season, the more insane that it becomes…
This week starts out in the prison with Raylan and Dewey Crowe. Dewey is always a funny moment every week. This time when he is trying to tell Raylan different information, he seems to always lose track of what he is saying though when he is talking to Raylan… Cannot really blame him though when all Raylan does is beat him up and throw him in jail.
Loretta has been one of the best characters on this show this season. She is supposed to be this younger child but her intelligence is incredible. When Mags son comes into her store and sees Loretta is running it all, it seemed more like a brother mad at his sister for being better than he is.
Raylan is referenced as “Hillbilly Whisperer” by his boss Art. They seem to be playing a lot off of the fact that he has a lot of connections down in Harlan. We saw it in the first week as well when Rachel asked him to come down to Harlan because everyone down there makes her uncomfortable.
Arlo and Helen have always cracked me and they do in this episode as well. We see Arlo come into the US Marshall’s office to give back what was left of the money that he stole and of course it is nowhere near what he stole in the first place. Earlier this season we saw that Helen is very upset with everything that has been happening with Arlo and Raylan and that she isn’t going to take it anymore. After everything that happened last season I am surprised that she hadn’t left already.
Boyd and this group of men from the mine are just crazy. He is very smart though and he has found a way around what everyone else wants. When he uses the cell phone to call the house to find out what the plan is behind his back, it was a little predictable but it was the right way to go about it without drawing suspicion.
Raylan and Boyd together are a great combination. I was surprised that Boyd didn’t tip him off in any way though seeing as he was there anyway.
I am not sure why Boyd is still trying to go along with their plan. It doesn’t really seem to make sense, especially knowing that they plan to kill him.
Winston Banks, the ATV tour guide, also the person that was writing those phony signatures on checks. “Praise God and ride hard”. While Winston was trying to get away from Raylan it was sort of an odd and stupid way to go about it by trying to knock him out, that seems to only get him angrier.
Tonight we see a bit more of the crossover between Deadwood and Justified. They brought Jim Beaver into this episode as Shelby, the head of the coal mine there. When they were robbing Shelby it was like a chicken with their heads cut off. They seemed to be panicking rather than keeping their cool.
Raylan in Harlan talking to Mags son was sort of sad in a way. They talk about Walt, Loretta’s father and the fact that he has been cashing his checks.
Boyd actually has a great moment where he truly shows that he has changed. By saving Shelby and blowing those men up, he really did save himself some trouble. It truly does show his quality.
Coover and Dickie really are stupid. Coover knows that Raylan is onto them and everything that they are up to with Loretta’s fathers checks.
Within that last 5 minutes of this week, you see two completely different sets of parents/guardians. You see Mags who is out of her mind, smashing her sons hand in with a hammer. Then you see Raylan, who is not related to Loretta in anyway, and he cares about her enough to leave her a cell phone and tell her that she can call at any time.
Any thoughts or ideas on next week’s episode?!?
Next Week : Blaze of Glory

Loved this one but I love the show. This was good Raylan story and good Boyd story that tho not connected still showed growth in these two men. Raylan is showing he can be a good marshall without needing his gun and Boyd has the need to rob but he reason this time was to help Ava. I just love Raylan…his character is fun to watch and the scene with Loretta was moving and you know when the mess hits the fan, he will be there for her…and I think she will reach out to him as well.
I enjoyed that aspect too. I just wish that there was a connection between them. They work so well with each other.
I adore this show and thought the episode was great. Man, that scene with Mags was so hard to watch. I was cringing the whole time. Oof!
I have to agree. It was very difficult to watch, It was very well done though.
While I love Raylon, Boyd is the most unique character. His depth is unreal. Walton Goggins says so much with one look. When he was honest with Ava, and stated “that’s what I do” I was almost in tears. How touching. You always know when people grow as a human being, when they realize their limitations. This show is poetic beauty. Nice review! And WELCOME BACK JUSTIFIED!
“The life of a character doesn’t just exist between action and cut”
That is one of the things Walton Goggins has been saying since The Shield. He one hundred percent believes in the characters that he is playing and he shows it in everything that he is in. Thats one of the things that makes him one of my favorite actors.
Great episode and I cannot wait for Wednesday!
