Now that Glee club is on top of the world, what’s left to do except shoot for the moon? That’s Will’s idea, at least. He’s feeling pretty cocky and confident about things, even thinks that he’s over Emma, until she runs into his Spanish class, telling him that Sue’s left a suicide note in her journal. They dash over to her home to find her “overdosed” on gummy vitamins. She says she’s got nothing to live for since the Cheerios lost regionals. Will is less than sympathetic.
Someone else experiencing a drop in self-confidence is Sam, who thinks he’s losing Quinn, even though he believes her when she says she only caught mono from Finn because she gave him mouth-to-mouth while choking on a gumball (insert dumb blonde joke here). His dad told him some nonsense about holding onto a girl through hunting and rock and roll, so he decides to epitomize rock and roll by emulating Justin Beiber. Let’s see how well this turns out…
Rachel is attempting to reinvent herself and become popular at school, so she’s convinced Brittany to dress a little more like her and tell everyone she’s inspired by Rachel. Unfortunately for Rachel, Brittany’s not following the leg warmer rules.
A little counseling with Emma results in Sue joining the Glee club to alleviate her depression and bring everyone together. You can imagine how pleased everyone is about that. Will’s also got some information about this year’s regionals, namely that there’s a theme: anthem. Sam decides to show off his knowledge of what an anthem is by performing Justin Beiber’s “Baby.” I admire the acting talents of the entire Glee club by making it looks like they’re actually enjoying that particular song. But the boys of the club want in on the Justin Beiber experience, so all but Finn join the band to pep up their relationships.
Sue’s true motives are revealed through her journal – she’s attempting to break up the club from within. She goes to Mercedes and Rachel individually for advice on how to be a diva and tells them that they’ve been talking about each other behind their backs. Time for a diva-off! But before we can get to the main event, the new and improved Justin Beiber experience performs “Somebody to Love.” And all the girls love it. Even Lauren is fairly impressed… though not enough yet.
Quinn officially breaks it off with Finn, saying she’s turned on by Sam as an artist. In other love lives, Puck gives Lauren some advice on how to sing in front of a crowd, and little by little he seems to be gaining ground with her.
Time for the diva-off! Of course, Mercedes and Rachel perform “Take Me or Leave Me” from Rent. Why is it that whenever they’re trying to show each other up they only manage to complement each other? Oh wait, I guess that’s the point. By the end of the song, their friendship is back on firm ground. Curses, Sue says! Foiled again!
Will takes Sue to the hospital to the pediatric ward to sing songs to sick children, which Sue is just THRILLED about, though she goes along with it eventually. They sing “This Little Light of Mine” and Sue gets into it, just like we all knew she would. I think these are some of my favorite parts of the show – the parts where Sue lights up and becomes human.
Lauren gives her Glee club debut with “I Know What Boys Like.” She takes Puck’s advice and pictures everyone naked, and basically rocks the house. In her own, special, Lauren way.
Santana tries to give Sam some “friendly” advice, telling him to pull his head out of his butt and realize that Quinn cheated on him. She wants to give him a little something-something, proving to the school and Finn that he’s got some pull and is not a dork. This scene had some absolutely amazing lines from Santana. “Moistening a giant stamp for a lazy giant” – genius.
Sam proves that he’s a puppet on a string by taking Santana’s advice and dumping Quinn, leaving her devastated. What a surprise.
Sue is ready for her anthem, and she chooses “Sing” by My Chemical Romance. It’s an ensemble rather than a solo, but you can see Sue’s stamp of approval through the plaid. Rachel objects to using this song at regionals, saying it’s not strong enough for the competition. She thinks that Glee club needs to write their own songs. No one else agrees with her… except for Finn.
And here’s the big shocker that NO ONE saw coming: Sue is now the new coach for Aural Intensity.
I’m pretty sure the Sue getting involved in regionals twist was seen by most from a mile off. But what do you think about the idea of Glee club writing their own songs? Isn’t most of the fun of the music the fact that they’re accessible versions of everyone’s favorite hits?

The best part of this whole episode was how Lauren pictured everyone in their underwear. She sure has an imagination!
I love when we see Sue’s softer side. Hands down, that performance was the best of the year.
I’m not a huge fan of the show anymore, and HATE when they use my favorite songs, so I rather not comment on the fact that they took Rent (which Idina made so famous) and had Lea (her on screen daughter) and attempted it. It’s not even a good duet/duel song. How about get a song that makes sense when dueting/dueling? UGH.
I’m done with Quinn, who acts like a saint but is far from it. And can Dianna Agron please talk about a whisper? It’s getting old to adjust my volume when she comes on.
Ok, I think I’m done being snarky. 🙂
