KPonTV on The 2011 Golden Globe Nominations

kpontv

The Golden Globes air tonight!. A fun award show where they give the celebrities alcohol, you can’t lose. We’ll be updating this post live with the TV Category winners.

The are hosted in 2011 by Ricky Gervais, you can’t lose.

Movies and Television, you can’t lose.

However, these nominees – well, some of them will have to lose. Check back after the awards are handed out to see how well I was able to guess!

Let’s take a closer look at these, shall we?

Best Drama Series
‘Mad Men,’ AMC
‘The Good Wife,’ CBS
‘Boardwalk Empire,’ HBO
‘The Walking Dead,’ AMC
‘Dexter,’ Showtime

KPonTV: Boardwalk Empire is a glorious piece of filming, however the story was a bit slow. The Good Wife is a court-room drama mixed with all kinds of romantic will then/won’t they moments. It’s like The Office meets Law & Order.

It’s strong, but is it strong enough? The Walking Dead and Dexter showcase zombies and a serial killer. Ah, America – we do love our dysfunction don’t we? How can anyone vote against Mad Men? Witty, smart, glamorous and oh yeah – really well acted. My prediction is a globe for the Mad Men.
Winner: ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ HBO. Wrong – again.

modern family

Best Comedy Series
‘Glee,’ Fox
’30 Rock,’ NBC
‘The Big Bang Theory,’ CBS
‘Modern Family,’ ABC
‘The Big C,’ Showtime

KPonTV: The Big C – laughing at cancer. I like the idea behind it, but is it really the best comedy on TV? 30 Rock remains funny in bursts, but it’s getting a bit tiresome no? Glee ended season 1 a bit on a down note and the first half of season 2 was tough to watch. Modern Family was everyone’s ‘darling’ last year and has a great shot. The little show that could is now Big Bang. I think Modern Family will take the prize, but Big Bang could eek out a surprise. I’m sorry to not see Community or How I Met Your Mother on the list, and shockingly, I’m not that surprised that The Office fell off the ballot for last season.
Winner: Glee. Farrah again here for KP. I will speak for both of us when I say “what?!” I think everyone else is in shock, too. Their actors are deserving of the win. Show? Meh.

Best Actor, Drama
Steve Buscemi, ‘Boardwalk Empire’
Michael C. Hall, ‘Dexter’
Jon Hamm, ‘Mad Men’,
Hugh Laurie, ‘House’
Bryan Cranston, ‘Breaking Bad’

KPonTV: You can’t vote for them all, yet you can’t bet against any of them. All of these men MAKE their shows. Cranston and Hall play characters that really soak up every little morsel of acting ability. House is getting a bit long in the tooth, Buscemi won’t dethrone these guys and Hamm is great on SNL but is he better than these others when he’s on Mad Men? I think it’s between Hall and Cranston with Cranston winning it.
Winner:Steve Buscemi, ‘Boardwalk Empire’. I’m apparently not very good at picking winners.

Best Actress, Drama
Julianna Margulies, ‘The Good Wife’
Piper Perabo, ‘Covert Affairs’
Elisabeth Moss, ‘Mad Men
Kyra Sedgwick, ‘The Closer’
Katey Sagal, ‘Sons of Anarchy’

KPonTV: What a surprise to see Perabo on this list. Good for her! Covert Affairs has a wonderful cult fan-base and I’m sure many of them are pulling for her. Elisabeth Moss is good in everything from West Wing to skin care commercials. She’s even better in Mad Men. Kyra is always finding her name on this list and with The Closer finishing up next year, has been pulling out all the stops. Julianna has nothing but praise landing on her for The Good Wife and for good reason. She’s really really good. Then we have Katey Sagal. What a career this woman has had. Her role on Sons of Anarchy is one of such power, that she easily could get the win! I think it comes down to Kyra, Katey and Julianna and I think the International Press will go with Julianna.
Winner: Katey Sagal, ‘Sons of Anarchy’. Great win! Glad I was wrong for this one, well deserved!

parsons

Best Actor, Comedy
Alec Baldwin, ’30 Rock’
Steve Carell, ‘The Office’
Thomas Jane, ‘Hung’
Matthew Morrison, ‘Glee’
Jim Parsons, ‘The Big Bang Theory’

KPonTV: It’s very difficult to not become ‘one-note’ in a comedy. Frank Burns, Cosmo Kramer, George Jefferson, etc. You get stuck in a rut. These guys try to break that mold. Matthew Morrison sings and dances circles around these actors, but his comedy isn’t close to the others. Thomas Jane is fine in Hung, but I’m really surprised to see him on this ballot. Jim Parsons is playing a character that could no-doubt become only one note, but he doesn’t. He’s funny ALL the time on the show – no down time. Baldwin’s “Jack” is showing a little more heart lately and therefore a bit more depth to the character. However, I’m giving the win to Carell. The Office is heading the wrong direction on the ‘hill’ but the role of Michael has so many levels, and every single one of them are played beautifully by Steve Carell. My dark horse is for Parsons to take it.
Winner: Jim Parsons, ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Farrah again here for KP. He was wrong (while I was totally right). Jim Parsons is proving his worth as one of the best new comedy actors of our time. And how about his co-star Kaley handing him the award?

Best Actress, Comedy
Toni Collette, ‘United States of Tara’
Edie Falco, ‘Nurse Jackie’
Tina Fey, ’30 Rock’
Laura Linney, ‘The Big C’
Lea Michele, ‘Glee’

KPonTV: Like Morrison above, Lea Michele can out perform any of these ladies on the musical stage, but in the comedy arena she’s very out-matched. Tina Fey has been playing Tina Fey for years now and I think the voters have moved on. That leaves some actresses with real ‘rep’. Collette, Falco and Linney are known much more for their dramatic skills than the giggles, but in these roles, all three deliver. All three have many ‘real’ issues to deal with on their shows and their characters keep us entertained with their battles. I can’t pick a winner, but I’ll pick Collette only because she plays so many different ‘characters’ on her show.
Winner: Laura Linney, ‘The Big C.’ Farrah here for KP. That was a stunner. Not even a top pick (and she wasn’t there!). Whoops.

Best Supporting Actor
Scott Caan, ‘Hawaii Five-0′
Chris Noth, ‘The Good Wife’
David Strathairn, ‘Temple Grandin’
Eric Stonestreet, ‘Modern Family’
Chris Colfer, ‘Glee’

KPonTV: The Golden Globes lumps comedy, drama and mini-series into one category for supporting and it’s really annoying. How do you put Eric Stonestreet, David Strathairn and Scott Caan up against each other. They are all doing VERY different things. I think Colfer will win this award at the Emmy’s for best supporting in a comedy, but he can’t win at the Globes. Chris Noth is a favorite cause everyone still thinks he’s Mr. Big, but he’s not good enough in Good Wife to win. Stonestreet is GENIUS in Modern Family as “Cam”, Strathairn is amazing in anything he does, and Scott Caan shows he’s got the goods in 5-0. I think it’s a two horse race between Stonestreet and Strathairn. It all depends on if the voters like drama or comedy. Me, I like comedy, so I’m giving the win to Stonestreet.
Winner:Chris Colfer, ‘Glee’ – AMAZING! His reaction is priceless. Who doesn’t love Kurt?

lynch

Best Supporting Actress
Jane Lynch, ‘Glee’
Julia Stiles, ‘Dexter’
Kelly Macdonald, ‘Boardwalk Empire’
Hope Davis, ‘The Special Relationship’
Sofia Vergara, ‘Modern Family’

KPonTV: Could Jane Lynch and Hope Davis be doing more different work in Glee and The Special Relationship? Again, how do you pit them against each other? I’m never one for Mini-Series type wins in these categories, so I’m ruling out Davis. Again, I don’t think Boardwalk Empire has ‘enough’ to take any categories – sorry Kelly MacDonald. That leaves comedy queens Lynch and Vergara and Julia Stiles’ amazing turn in Dexter. I think the comediennes will cancel each other out and we’ll see Stiles take the award.
Winner: Jane Lynch, ‘Glee’. I should have voted with my funny bone. Ugh.

So, there you go – my TwoCents on these major TV Globe Awards. Sorry, but since Band of Brothers no TV Movies/Mini Series can hold a candle for me, so I’m not talking about them. I’d love to hear what you guys think about the nominations, the shows, my thoughts, any of it. Share with us below in the comments.

  1. Ken Briodagh says:

I can’t argue with too much of what you’ve written, Keith, but I take issue with some of the (non)nominations. Lisa Edelstein as Lisa Cuddy on House – superb dramatic stuff this year, and still she has the chops to make me laugh. Why no nod? No idea. Gotta agree with you about Hugh Laurie though. Not award-winning stuff this year. I hope you’re right about Cranston over hall in the Best Actor cat.

I’m so over Mad Men, too… Walking Dead is so much more watchable, but it’ll get passed over for more mainstream offerings. Lame.

As a final note: When, oh when, will web TV get a category? Much of the best programming is online only these days, and the Globes are missing it. Rant over.
p.s. as one who watches not much t.v., I’m a big fan of your work. You do great stuff.

  2. Laura Ann says:

My pick for Best TV Drama is going to Mad Men. While I love the other shows I just don’t see them as toppling Mad Men again this year. I’m also incredibly peeved that Breaking Bad wasn’t nominated for Best Drama but The Good Wife was?? How many court room dramas have we had in the past two decades..this one is not that special in my opinion. Nothing like Breaking Bad has ever been done. I’m also really sad that Aaron Paul wasn’t nominated for Breaking Bad. I thought this past season was his best.

Actors? I’m going again with Jon Hamm. I would say Michael C. Hall but I think this past season of Dexter was good..but not his best. Don Draper had some pretty incredible moments this season. THE episode with Peggy that’s still in everyone’s minds will win it for him alone…which leads me to my next opinion…

Actresses. Please, God, PLEASE let Elisabeth Moss win Best Actress this year. I think she completely deserves it. Also…why wasn’t Christina Hendricks nominated? I thought this was her best season yet. I thought we saw sides of Joan that she’s never showcased before and I pinned her as a front runner. Lame foreign press.

As far as comedies go, I’m truly hoping Carell walks away with the statue. Even though I hardly ever watch The Office anymore Michael Scott is going down in history and Carell has kept the show afloat for the past couple of seasons. He deserves it for the entire series.

I have to say that while I was a fan in the beginning, Glee has completely lost its charm for me to the point of me being really angry that it’s nominated for anything. Lea Michele is not that funny and plays a really one dimensional character. I also think the writing on the show is atrocious and nothing above Gossip Girl…what with their skipping about from plot line to plot line and Quinn is dating Finn who’s now dating Mercedes and on and on and on…the audience never has time to catch up! I absolutely believe that Community should have had their nomination instead.

LOL, I hope you’ve enjoyed my rant. Now I don’t have to write the tv portion of my Golden Globe blog…thanks Keith! 😉

    • KP says:

A truly great rant Laura! I wonder why Community isn’t being shown more love. That paint-ball episode last year was better than any thing any other comedy did.

  3. ryanoneil says:

I haven’t watched any other shows in her category, so I can’t comment on their performances but Elizabeth Moss had her best season this year with Mad Men. You could see her character evolve from episode to episode.

I stopped watching Glee because the writing was bad. So, it getting nominated over Community really disappoints me.

    • KP says:

Glee was miserable to start year 2, I wonder how many people they lost like you. The show has come back and shown some more heart and character – and better song choices, but I don’t disagree with people who walked away.

  4. Katie says:

Right on, Keith. But I absolutely agree with Laura Ann on Elisabeth Moss. She was especially amazing this year. I’m pulling for her.

Ken, as someone who doesn’t watch much TV, you should count your lucky stars that your favorite show The Walking Dead was not only nominated, but has already been renewed for a second season! That is mainstream, my friend. My new favorite show, Terriers, was canceled because it wasn’t mainstream enough. And that’s despite extremely amazing acting and writing. IMO, it was the best new show of the season, and that is coming from someone who watches A LOT of TV.

I stopped watching Glee after the first couple episodes this season. I’ve always been frustrated by the mostly “eh” writing (other than Mike O’Malley’s scenes voicing his love and support of Kurt — O’Malley should have won that Emmy!), but overlooked it because the singing entertained me. I also usually overlooked (except maybe on this website) rabid Glee fans constantly telling me how great the writing was. I could always see the show for what it was, but based on my friends’ Facebook statuses, the veil has now been lifted from their eyes as well. It does still annoy me that something with such weak writing and caricatureish characters gets a nod, especially over something more inventive, like Community. And that something with such well-developed, nuanced characters (Terriers) was canceled without a second chance.

I will end with some of my favorite unmentioned performances from this past year: Jake Weber(Medium), Jackie Earle Haley (Human Target), Anna Torv (Fringe), Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice), Donal Logue (Terriers), Michael Imperioli (Detroit 187), Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope), Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age), Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight), Eric Stoltz (Caprica), and Regina King (Southland)

    • Alyssa Silva says:

i say aye to jeffrey donovan!

also i want to know why emily deschanel hasn’t gotten anything. did no one want to cry for her last week too?

    • KP says:

I think you need to start a WHY TERRIERS WHY website. I think you’ll get a lot of support in the TV world.

      Amen to Mike O’Malley!

  5. Karen says:

Being that I am one of those cult followers of Covert Affairs, I am bummed to see Chris Gorham was NOT nominated for supporting actor. He has gotten nothing but praise on playing a blind guy. Which brings me to ask: why us the supporting role category not broken down by drama/comedy?
