A couple of natives are out hunting wild boar with bows and arrows when instead of a boar they find a young woman who needs help. Cut to beautiful underwater scenes, McGarrett and CHK are spear fishing. They reminisce about McGarrett senior, and Steve shows HCK the toolbox his Dad left him. CHK offers to help him sort out the clues.
The team is called to the hospital to figure out what’s going on with mystery girl (Erica). She has no idea how she ended up in the forest. She has very sketchy memories of what happened to her and to top it off, her husband is missing too. The missing husband’s (Jake) mom shows up and tells 5O that if something happened it’s Erica’s fault. The team dug up some dirt based on the mother-in-law’s accusations that Erica is a gold-digger. The shotgun romance has raised some red flags. McGarrett and Danno question Erica, and she bad mouths the mom in return. Kono and CHK check out the hotel room, which Kono finds the antithesis of romance. They notice a weird acetone like smell, and it appears to originate from the adjoining room. It appears that gas was pumped in to the room, which helps to explain a lot of things.
McGarrett and Danno check out the other hotel that Erica’s cell phone was calling. They can’t enter the room unlawfully, so they do a thing about probably cause. McGarrett kicks down the door much to Danno’s chagrin. The occupant shows up, he’s FBI. At the honeymoon suite, Kono finds the dead body of Jake. The team swaps notes, CHK has more details on Jake death. McGarrett and Danno are interrogating FBI man, he spills after learning of Jake’s death. He was a family friend, and was following them at the mom’s request. He also says that Erica wasn’t faking her love for Jake. McGarrett does the notification to Erica, and on the car ride home Danno and McGarrett have a heart to heart about doing death notifications. When the moment is over, they turn on the radio, but the song is so bad and Danno almost loses it. They are so perfect together!
CHK and Kono go to see Max (yay!) He is such an oddball. But he gives CHK and Kono a big lead, there were similar murders last year in French Polynesia. The MO is almost identical, the only problem is that Erica got away. HPD calls with the location of the rental car, and start canvassing out. Kono, smart girl that she is, looks through FBI guy’s stalker photos, and finds three photos with the same random guy in the background. And we’re looking at a serial killer.
McGarrett and Danno find a shipping container that appears to be the place he took Erica. Kono and CHK ties it all together, the killer is travelling by cruise ship and it’s docking another island! Eeek. Danno has to take off his tie and where a lei, which he’s not happy about. They bust into the killers room, but he’s not there. They use the cruise ship staff to search for him, but it’s going to be tough. Do you know how many corners there are in a cruise ship? Searching his room, they find a secret compartment in his briefcase with more data on the victims. Meanwhile, one of the porters finds the killer, trails him, only to be knocked out by a fire extinguisher. McGarrett follows the trail to another state room, and it looks like the killer jumped overboard.
The chase is on! They find out why the guy went mental and murderous, but aren’t any closer to catching him. Killer is already laying the trap for his next victim. He does a smash and grab, not even bothering to kill the husband and just takes the wife. But McGarrett and Danno are on to him, as they race to the hotel, Danno spots him coming out of the parking garage. The chase is REALLY on! And it’s on the windy road in Hawaii, and Danno is gonna puke! They almost lose him but then the kidnapped wife wakes up and they reach the end of the road, why she doesn’t struggle more I don’t know. The cliff edge is also a factor and McGarrett and Danno point their guns at him and try and talk him down. McGarrett and Danno have one of their little bickering spats to distract the killer, and McGarrett gets his shot in, but the killer goes over the cliff.
At the station, Erica and her mother-in-law try to make amends. In a different story arc, CHK has news about McGarrett’s mystery number from his Dad. There’s a little bit of info they but the case file is missing. It appears that McGarrett’s mother was murdered, instead of dying in a car accident like he thought.
