Tick, tick, tick… that is the sound of season five nearing its end. We’ve followed Dexter and Lumen’s adventures in homicide closely, but we don’t know how it will end. All we know after tonight is that the excitement and peril has certainly stepped up.

Dexter and Lumen are after Jordan Chase. Deb is after the Barrel Girl Killer. Jordan chase is after Dexter and Lumen. Liddy is after Dexter and Lumen. And Quinn is avoiding Liddy as much as he can. Which cat will catch their prey tonight?

Quinn and Deb go to see Jordan Chase to thank him for the Alex Tilden tip, but advise he has disappeared like the others. They think Jordan is the common link. But he’s had it with their questions and says his DNA cleared him and that Deb is bordering on obsession with him. Deb casually mentions the vigilante theory and says he’s being hunted. She’s sure he’s involved.

Dexter and Lumen are mapping out snatching Jordan (using Harrison’s toys) and realize they’ll have to catch him outside his office to avoid security. Dexter is stressing about Deb being too close to figuring everything out. He knows it’s not the first time he’s lied to her, but that she has a blind spot where he’s concerned. He notices the baby monitor is showing him and Lumen and realizes there’s a surveillance camera in the apartment. He assumes Jordan is behind it.

Quinn meets up with Liddy, who has officially been terminated by the force. Liddy says he’s getting ready to make a big bust with Dexter, and Quinn is going to help. Quinn declines, but Liddy says he has no choice in the matter.

Dexter and Lumen scour the apartment for the camera and find one in a lamp. He’s stunned to find it’s a Miami Police Department issued camera. He knows they haven’t watched the surveillance since he hasn’t been arrested. Lumen, near tears, says it can’t end like this and Dexter assures her it won’t. Sonya called from Orlando about Harrison’s upcoming birthday party. Dexter knows there’s too much danger in Miami, so he tells her it should be in Orlando. Lumen accidentally on purpose invites herself along.

At the station, Deb brings Dexter into a meeting where she lays out her Jordan Chase theory and how she needs to connect him to the others. Masuka is happy to announce he found a matching female footprint outside of Alex Tilden’s empty neighboring home. He says the house was too clean and smelled like bleach, perhaps that’s where the vigilante killer struck. LaGuerta is surprised to hear the vigilante theory. Deb realizes the killer probably has male help. Do they even need other cops with Deb having such amazing insight?

Dexter sneaks into the equipment room and is shocked to find the surveillance camera was signed out to Quinn. There are no search warrants for his address, so he knows whatever Quinn is up to is off the books. He and Lumen sneak into Quinn’s apartment to see what he’s got and find the photos of themselves at the marina that Liddy gave him.

Deb and Quinn go to Dan the Dentist’s office and find his wife, Laura Mendel (aka Popular’s Mary Cherry) packing the place up. She’s disgusted that she didn’t know about her husband’s secret gay life, but the detectives tell her probably wasn’t gay and may have actually been a serial rapist and murderer (that’s better?). She gives them the link to Jordan Chase, saying that her husband and Eugene Greer/Jordan Chase were actually childhood friends. Quinn wonders how the wife didn’t know and Deb, unknowingly mirroring her own life, says that the guy was a good liar and it wasn’t the wife’s fault.

Dexter invites Deb to Orlando for Harrison’s birthday, she declines due to work, but Dexter decides to probe a little into her relationship with Quinn. She admits that it might be over, but she cares (not cared) about him. She tells Dexter that Quinn had a crazy theory about him being involved in Rita’s death. She feels betrayed. She then surmises that whoever is helping the vigilante must be very dedicated to her. She finds it effed up and beautiful at the same time. Hmmm… foreshadowing?

Dexter and Lumen go on an evening shopping trip and purchase her a cute little knife (I’d prefer jewelry, but that’s me). He wants her to leave so he can deal with everything, but she’d rather he come with her. They romance the idea, but he admits he wants her to stay.

Back at the station, Batista says he was able to link Jordan and Tilden via real estate deal. Deb is stunned that they’ve managed to connect them all. It’s not enough for an arrest, but with Jordan getting ready to leave for Europe, they decide to try and detain him on a material witness order. Deb’s determined to get it herself, unsure if LaGuerta would have her back. Quinn takes a moment to apologize to Deb and say he loves her. He doesn’t want to lose her and her amazing filthy word vocabulary.

Outside of his apartment, Dexter is inspecting white vans that he thinks Quinn may be watching him from. He approaches it with his trusty syringe, but Liddy surprises him and knocks him out with a taser. Meanwhile, Emily Birch calls Lumen and says she’s freaking out, Jordan knows they spoke, and she needs to see her and Dexter. Lumen frantically tries to call Dexter.

Dexter awakens to find himself bound in the back of Liddy’s van. Liddy taunts him that he’ll be a hero when he turns Dexter in for what he’s been up to. He calls Quinn and tells him to meet him at the docks. Dexter’s cells phone rings and Liddy ignores a call from Lumen, but texts Sonya to go ahead with the magician for Harrison’s party. As they park, Liddy shows off his surveillance video of Dexter and Lumen.

Lumen arrives alone at Emily’s. Emily is frantic that Dexter isn’t there too. From the couch, Jordan greets Lumen and stops her from leaving.

Liddy tells Dexter to confess and he’ll let Lumen walk. He grabs a video camera to tape what he believes will be Dexter’s confession, but Dexter has other ideas. He fights back, kicking the camera into Liddy, and the two struggle over a knife. Dexter overpowers Liddy and forces the knife into his chest. Dexter sees Quinn approaching the van and stays quiet until he leaves. He tosses all the surveillance equipment into the ocean and heads home.

At the station, LaGuerta informs Deb her material witness order was denied. She tells Deb that she should’ve come to her, but Deb doesn’t think LaGuerta was willing to go to bat for her. LaGuerta says Deb is a smart cop and that she trusts her instincts. LaGuerta went to another judge, called in a favor, and got the order. The police surround Jordan’s plane, but he’s not there.

Dexter gets Lumen’s voicemail and heads off to Emily’s. At Emily’s, Jordan asks where Dexter is, but Lumen doesn’t know. Emily apologizes to Jordan who screams for her to be quiet and says it’s all her fault. Lumen tries to make a run for it and Jordan grabs her and goes for a fire poker. Emily cries he promised not to kill Lumen, and that sets Jordan off and he bludgeons her to death with the poker.

Dexter arrives at Emily’s and calls out for Lumen. He follows blood throughout the house and is afraid that once again the only love he’ll ever find will end in blood. He finds Emily’s body, but notes that there are running footprints leading out of the house. He discovers Lumen’s knife, covered in blood, and knows she’s putting up a fight. He clenches the knife and walks off as the screen goes black.

And that’s it! One episode left to tide us over until next fall. What will happen? All signs are pointing to Deb somehow becoming aware of what her brother is involved with. If so, how will she react? Will she be sympathetic to her brother or act on her cop instincts? And what will happen to Lumen? Can somebody find me a video of a cat that hiccups and farts at the same time? Are you anxiously awaiting the answers to these questions or do you have more of your own?

  1. Are we to believe that Dexter would leave Liddy’s body in the van? I didn’t think he would risk that with all of Harry’s training! #1. Don’t get caught.

We saw Chase get very confrontational with Deb. He was egging her on to the point of making it personal. I though of “Silence of the Lambs”,

Hannibal Lecter: First principles, Clarice. Simplicity. Read Marcus Aurelius. Of each particular thing ask: what is it in itself? What is its nature? What does he do, this man you seek?
    Clarice Starling: He kills women…
Hannibal Lecter: No. That is incidental.

Are we bound to see a repeat of Deb being taken hostage?

Are we willing to believe, Emily, the human robot would tolerate “Jordan”, for all those years?

And what about Jordan? He wears a vile of Emily’s blood around his neck. And one incident makes him turn on her and kill her with 2 blows? Or are we back to Silence of the Lambs?

Hannibal Lecter: No! He covets. That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer now.
    Clarice Starling: No. We just…
Hannibal Lecter: No. We begin by coveting what we see every day. Don’t you feel eyes moving over your body, Clarice? And don’t your eyes seek out the things you want?

So far, I will say this season has been sloppy as a whole. I do enjoy the Barrel girls plot, and my hunger to feed WHY they did it. However I wish they didn’t waste time on the Fuentes brothers and all that went with it. Now if they bring the remaining brother back for the finale who would care?

The knife buying gave me heebie jeebies. How do you go present shopping for murder weapons?

So many open ended plots. I am not sure Dexter will satisfy the tv viewers that analyze everything!

I don’t think Deb will end up as a hostage (again), I think she’ll actually turn out to be the rockstar of the case. I think there’s a high probability that Lumen will end up taking the rap for the whole thing (and leave Dexter’s name out of it)

I do worry that Dexter left behind some physical evidence in that van (hair fibers), but if he’s the crime scene tech, it all gets explained away, right?

Emily definitely had some sort of Stockholm Syndrome with Jordan… I think those window bars were him keeping her in that house, under his control. He commented on how disgusting it was to have to do his own work at the end, so who knows what kind of messed up childhood lead him to have such rage against women issues?

As for the whole cleaning up the loose ends… I still want to know how Dexter got from the Mitchell garage last season to the trunk of Arthur’s car. Trinity had such a head start!!!!

i agree, and what about surveillance equipment with serial numbers and bar codes, that was hard to believe.

        Thanks for the video!

I don’t have a hard time with the serial number aspect. That seems like something a police department would do… But Dexter’s ease of breaking in to anything, anywhere, anytime without getting caught is a little ridiculous. I mean he picks locks in broad daylight all the time!
