I hate Thanksgiving. I have since I was seven and my family moved away from our home and extended family. It’s lonely. So the one thing I have as a saving grace is good TV and funny Thanksgiving episodes, like How I Met Your Mother‘s “Slapsgiving.”

This year, we were promised greatness in the form of Hurley, er, I mean Jorge Garcia. The gang’s Thanksgiving would also include a dog on a skateboard and Zoey in Ted’s bathtub. What? Yep, read on to how all that went down.

Ted wants to leave the gang early to make a “Tuturkeykey” (a small turkey inside of a bigger turkey … think of it as a poor man’s turducken). When he wants to leave, the gang reminds him of “The Blitz.” Blitz was Ted and Marshall’s friend Steve, who they said was “cursed” because good things would happen every time he left a room. Ted says he doesn’t believe in The Blitz curse and leaves to make his Tuturkeykey. When he wakes up the next morning, there’s a hot dog cart, street cones, Robin with KISS makeup on and Zoey in his bathtub! Oh no, he’s become The Blitz! (Not to mention, an inside joke “The Gentlemen!” that Ted is not a part of.)

After Ted left the bar the night before, Zoey showed up at the bar and Lily wanted to take Zoey down. When Lily went to steal her scarf, Zoey turned around to find Lily and freaked out because she is a huge fan of her artwork (remember – Lily paints). They have an awesome night, including a skateboarding dog and during a game of Truth or Dare, Zoey dares Marshall to send a picture of his “junk” to a stranger (bring in LOST reference #1 in the form of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42!). Even The Blitz was there, only he’s not The Blitz anymore!

Time to make dinner! Only in their amazingness the night before, Robin danced on the oven so Ted can’t cook his dinner. Uh oh. Everyone gets in the cab and go to Barney’s to use his oven, only his is a cardboard display of an oven. On to Marshall and Lily’s, but their place smells thanks to the sewage plant explosion. Next, off to Steve’s, but his oven is home to a liter box and cat. No thanks! Next option: Zoey invited everyone over for dinner since her husband is off spending Thanksgiving with his daughter. And they also realize Barney isn’t in the cab anymore. He’s the new Blitz! He realizes it and freaks out, trying to catch up with them, but it’s too late. Their cab took a wrong turn and they wound up in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and sang “Twist and Shout.” (Nice Ferris Bueller reference there.) They get to Zoey’s and the enemies try to put things aside for the night. The truth or dare challenge comes back to haunt Marshall in the form of a “wang” picture from the person he randomly texted. Robin is in love! Zoey and Ted keep arguing. Ted says enemies can’t become friends and Robin decides to get an outside opinion from “Wang Guy.” After Ted runs into Zoey accidentally and gets cranberries all over her, she kicks everyone out. But they forget Barney.

They decide to go home while Barney is still at Zoey’s. In the cab, Lily is holding a stuffed turkey animal and it makes Ted realize why Zoey was so upset: Her husband was off celebrating Thanksgiving with his daughter and she was looking forward to celebrating with her as well. At the last minute, she changed her mind, upsetting Zoey. Ted makes the cab go back and they all sit down to dinner. Voiceover Ted says that is the story of how he and Zoey became friends.

In the end, when everyone goes to leave, Steve forgets his jacket and has to go back into Zoey’s. In the elevator, Barney is with a woman whose dress gets stuck in the door. Steve is The Blitz again!

What happened to the good ol’ Slapsgiving? And Jorge Garcia is not that great at comedy (but maybe he just needs time?). The LOST references were not funny (after not being The Blitz anymore … “I’ve been stuck on that island for so long, it’s nice being on the other side.” Come on, really?) and do we need Zoey and Ted shoved down our throat SO much? There are theories she is the mother, and she obviously can’t stand her life but how can she be the mother if the mother is the roommate of Rachel Bilson? Makes zero sense. We’re almost at midseason, can we please get somewhere already?

Anyway, there ya go … the How I Met Your Mother Thanksgiving episode. What did you think? Did you miss Slapsgiving? Leave your two cents below.

A somewhat funny line of the night:
Barney: Robin! Robin! I will pay you to be the Blitz. A hundred dollars, no! Ten thousand dollars, no! Sixty bucks. What’s a lot of money to someone like you?

I really enjoyed this episode. I never watched Lost bit got all the references. But I love it when they do sandwich flashbacks! And Zoey painting Robin passed out was funny. It wasn’t the Pineapple Incident (my all-time fav), but I found it to be a funny episode like Lemon Law 🙂
