The family is opening up boxes from Hope’s mother (now that she’s been executed and all). There are some videos, which the family decides to watch with Hope. The videos are disturbing, so Virginia wants to burn the tapes. And tries to convince Jimmy that lying is a natural part of parenting. The conversation makes for a confession about how many more things they might have lied to Jimmy about.
One of those lies is that Jimmy was allergic to fruit, which he’s not, so he goes on a binge. But that’s not the big secret.
The secret has something to do with Maw Maw, which is tricky since she’s senile. Through several gross encounters later, the answer is: there’s a good reason for keeping secrets! Burt feels like he’s stuck between Virginia and Jimmy about Hope’s moms stuff. He thinks she should get to keep it, and gives her a voodoo doll that belonged to the serial killer mother.
Jimmy and Sabrina are trying to figure out what the secret is, and Sabrina discovers that Jimmy doesn’t know anything about the internet. And it turns out that a) Jimmy is allergic to fruit (starfruit to be exact) and while he is hysterically trying to scratch his tongue and b) his grandmother died in a very stupid way (by tying a plastic bag over her head.) Virginia is a liar! The grandmother didn’t die from stupidity, she’s still alive.
Burt continues to share Hope’s mom stuff with her. Including make-up and Polaroids of men sleeping. Jimmy goes to find his grandmother, and she’s a swinger! She also vehemently denies being anyone’s grandmother. But it turns out Virginia believes that her mother is dead, Maw Maw told the story to protect Virginia from her mother abandoning her.
Jimmy and Sabrina edits the video to be appropriate for Hope. I love this family. What do you think? Leave your TwoCents!

Thank you for recapping this show. I’ve found that most other sites that recap tv shows are not recapping this one. This is my favorite new show of the season. This ranks up there in my book with new comedies of last season like Community and Modern Family. There isn’t a weak member of this cast including Hope and her recently executed mother. Loved both episodes yesterday but I wish they would have run them in sequence. I got the feeling that this one was chronologically before the Halloween episode since there was no mention of Sabrina’s Halloween pass out.
You’re welcome!! I fully admit that I saw the trailers for this show and had NO intention of watching it, but I watched the pilot on hulu just to see and I LOVE IT!!
The cast is fantastic (especially Garrett Dillahunt) and the show is incredibly sweet. It really needs to get the recognition it deserves.
I also agree that I think they were out of sequence. It’s actually shocking to me sometimes how little plot fits into a half hour show (compared to an hour), so I’m sure we’ll hear all about the Sabrina kiss soon.
