This week on Grey’s Anatomy we see that it is not so easy to leave what happened behind you, and to move on as if nothing happened. This week we see a breakdown of massive proportions by a person who in general doesn’t show emotion. And we see that the truth might set you free.
Meredith’s voiceover: It doesn’t happen often, lightning usually gets it right the first time. When you’re hit with 30,000 amperes of electricity, you feel it. It can make you forget who you are, it can burn you, blind you, stop your heart. And cause massive internal injuries, but for something that happens in only a millisecond, it can change your life forever.
The episode starts with both Meredith and Cristina still not cleared to perform surgery. Meredith is trying to use every trick she knows to get cleared but the counselor obviously is not buying the fake tears. She’s trying to avoid Derek because she left him in jail for the night, and of course because she doesn’t want to tell him about the baby she lost on that day. Derek however is not a happy camper, I guess he didn’t expect Meredith to follow through on her earlier treath of leaving him in the pokey, as Cristina puts it. He’s too late for work, he’s got a record now and apparently he got pissed on.
Geesh! Torres the woman of your dreams agreed to move in with you. You knew beforehand that she is a perky sparkly bright personality so you could have guessed that she wanted to redecorate your apartment. She is moving in! Let the woman throw whatever color she likes at your walls. It’s not like you’ll be looking at the color of the walls when she’s around anyway. Being in a relationship means making sacrifices, she is moving in with you and doesn’t want to live in a ‘batcave’ let her choose the paint color. It’s beige, it could have been worse she could have wanted pink.
Bailey ‘accidentally’ runs into Karev in the hallway and finds out that he still has the bullet inside of him. She tells him that even though he has been cleared for surgery he is not going into a OR until he gets it removed.
Teddy has a case which is a once in a lifetime for a heart surgeon and she wants to have Cristina on the case. She knows that Yang isn’t cleared to operate but she goes straight to Webber with Owen and asks him to clear Cristina. They reason with him that Cristina is not like most other people and that she needs to be in surgery to be okay and that keeping her away is not the right thing to do. Webber kind of disagrees because he thinks that the surgery will be too much pressure, Owen en Teddy tell him that she saved Derek’s life with a gun to her head and that pressure is not the problem. Webber gives in and against the counselors orders he clears Cristina for the surgery.
Cristina’s first surgery will be a woman she has operated on before, Linda Cotler has been in the hospital for the removal of malignant myxomas from her heart three times before. When Burke was still working at SGH.
A massive trauma is coming into the pit calling for all hands on deck, Callie calls it an act of God. Lightening struck taking out eight flag football players. Mark is still worried about Lexie, to protect her he makes sure that he has eyes on her at all times. The problem is that Lexie feels trapped and wants to get away from him. Seven guys and one girl were on the team that got struck by lightning. Most of the injuries are flash burns and temporary paralysis. One girl, the only girl on the team is paralyzed from the waist down. Since Meredith is still not cleared for surgery she’s watching the wheel of fortune on the television when the program gets interrupted by a breaking news item about the lightning strike. Lexie freaks out and runs away causing Cristina, Avery and Meredith to frown at her sanity.
She runs off to find Derek who is talking to Mark and Webber when she finds him and tells him to come with her to look at the footage. Webber tells Mark to make sure that Lexie is alright, it only fuels to the worry that Mark already had and he goes after the other two. They find a bleeder in her spine which is causing the paralysis. She was not struck by lightening, she was already down because Warren ran into her before the lightening struck him. With a simple surgery Derek can fix the problem, but it would have been disastrous if Lexie hadn’t figured it out in time.
Since both Meredith and Karev are not allowed in surgery they are sitting in the gallery during Cristina’s first surgery. Karev asks Meredith if Lexie is okay, she tells him that he should ask her himself. Karev replies with by saying that Lexie doesn’t need him talking to her and claims that he is a lightening rod for crazy chicks. Whenever he gets close to a woman they go crazy. Meredith tells him that Lexie had a crazy thing happening to her to which she reacted in a pretty normal way, Izzie had a brain tumor and Rebecca was dealing with the trauma of the facial reconstruction.
Meanwhile in the OR Altman is working with Hunt, Avery and Cristina on Linda Colton when Avery knocks over a tray. Cristina flashes back to the OR in which she saved Derek. She falls to the floor and lies there motionless, both Teddy and Owen try to talk to her. They try to get her to react to them but she is unresponsive. Meredith watches on as it happens, she runs into the OR breaking protocol to be with her best friend. She lies on the floor in front of her and tries to talk Cristina through her fear.
Mark wants to propose to Lexie because he’s afraid that there might not be enough time and because he doesn’t want to wait to be happy anymore. Callie reasons with him that he is skipping steps, that is what she did. Telling him to not do it since she almost lost Arizona because she wanted to push her to have a baby but now that she’s gone back and taking all the steps she skipped things are fine between them. She tells Mark to tell Lexie how he feels.
Owen finds Cristina after the surgery, naturally he’s worried about her but Cristina seems to have made up her mind when she gives him her ring back.
Meredith finally tells Derek that she left him in jail for a night because as long as he was in jail she knew that he was safe. She knew that she wouldn’t get the dreaded phonecall that he wrapped his car around a pole. And finally she tells him that she was pregnant that day, finally the big secret is out. And it brings them back together.
Bailey calls Karev to an OR and tells him that she will remove the bullet from his chest whether he likes it or not. She does not need to be reminded by his bullet every time she sees him. She’s tired of bullying him and she wants him to get on the table so she can take the bullet out.
Meredith’s second voice over: “Lightening doesn’t often strike twice, it’s a once in a lifetime thing. Even if it feels like the shock is coming over and over again. Eventually the pain will go away, the shock will wear off. And you start to heal yourself, to recover from something you never saw coming. If you are in just the right place at just the right time you can take a hell of a hit and still have a shot at surviving.”
Mark find Lexie and wants to tell her how he feels about her, but Lexie won’t let him speak. She tells him how she is a good doctor and that she deserves to be seen that way. Asking him to leave her alone, Mark tells her he will. Mark goes home to find Callie with his own good advice, he tells her to paint the walls whatever stupid color Arizona wants.
Derek and Meredith arrive home to find Cristina sitting their alone, Derek takes that as his cue to leave the two friends alone and they talk about what happened. Meredith tells Cristina that she finally told him about the miscarriage. They talk about what happened, the marriage and the reasons Owen had for marrying Cristina. Then he storms in and tells her that he loves her and that when he needed someone Cristina had been there for him and that it now is his turn to be there for her and he didn’t care whether she was mad at him or scared. But that he would be there. Cristina gets up and tells him to take her home. Meredith on her turn tells him that she had already fixed Cristina but that it was a nice speech nevertheless.
The next day Meredith finally tells the counselor the truth of what happened that day, that she lost her baby and almost lost her husband and he clears her for surgery.
Well that was another interesting episode which only makes me wonder more and more about what’s in store for us. While I am still spoiler free, I can’t help but wonder what will happen to Callie and Arizona since Jessica Capshaw is going on maternity leave and there will be at least a few episodes in which we won’t see her. Since I am a huge Callie/Arizona shipper I can only hope that they somehow find a way to not include to much drama to get her out of the script for a while. But knowing Grey’s that is probably a long shot.
Or where will these developments between Lexie and Mark take them, is that really the end. I hope not, I really like them together. I hope there will be more, I think there will be more. Anyway you have read my review of the show, tell me what you think. I am looking forward to your two cents.
