For the better part of last season, Violet was MIA while Pete raised baby Lucas with our lovely doc Addison. However, now stable and ready to have a family, Violet came back and raised hell, wanting custody of Lucas – and her old life. In the season finale, she won them both back, with Addison’s blessing. Also in the season finale, our hottie midwife in training Dell passed away after being hit by a drunk driver while driving Maya to the hospital when she went into labor. With Amelia’s assistance, both Maya and the baby survived, giving Sam and Naomi a healthy granddaughter. As well, Cooper and Charlotte got engaged, nearly killing poor Sheldon who was still in love with Charlotte. And in the final scene, Addison finally went after something she wanted all season long – Sam.

When things pick up this season, no doubt there will be change. The first episode back has a wedding – Violet and Pete’s – but with Violet’s ever-changing emotions, will she go through with it? Are Addison and Sam still together? How is Sheldon holding up? And where is little Betsey?

The opening scene I could have done without – a montage of Cooper/Charlotte and Pete/Violet having sex and talking about their respective wedding plans. Cooper and Charlotte seem annoyed with each other while Pete suggests getting married. The gang has come together to say their goodbye to Dell at his unveiling. Sam tells Naomi she seems tired, which she is, since she has been flying back and forth to see William as he is still alive but dying. Where is Dink? Not participating in Maya’s life apparently (and the baby has been named Olivia). Sam offers for them to live with him but Naomi refuses. Addison arrives and Sam is very short with her. Uh oh. Amelia is still around, smoking. Eep! They get into it about Amelia not going to Seattle to visit Derek (nice Grey’s shoutout) and Amelia lectures Addison on not dating Sam. Really? The two compare? Standing around the stone, everyone talks about the horrible events that have transpired and Violet takes the moment to cheer everyone up with her engagement news. Cooper doesn’t seem thrilled though, saying it’s too fast. But she’s going fast – the wedding will be the coming weekend! And she asks Cooper to be her Maid of Honor! At the hospital, we meet our first medical case of the episode, a man who needs a kidney – now. Charlotte is overseeing the case and she is pushing him to contact his brother to see if he’s a match. He refuses but eventually gives in. A couple visits with Naomi to use a surrogate to have a baby. They had a son who died and NEED to have another baby. She takes the case to Addison who worked on the baby when he died. The father left the baby in the car and he suffocated to death. Addison does not seem happy to have this case around her. At the hospital, Ryan (Charlotte’s patient) finally informed his brother (amazing guest appearance by French Stewart!) of his condition. However, he failed to tell Charlotte or Sam (assisting on the case) that Kevin isn’t 100% mentally there. When asked why he’s there, he answers “I’m here to help my big brother right?”

Kevin is taken out by a nurse while Charlotte and Sam ask him about Kevin’s state. Ryan has been out of his life for a while but pays for his housing and anything he needs. He stays out of his life because he’s too needy but idolizes him and knows he can get the kidney. Ew! Sheldon meets with Naomi’s patients on how they grieved for their son. The father, Dave, talked about the day their son died. He had a routine he followed every day (being on “auto pilot”) and taking the baby wasn’t part of it. By the time he realized what had happened, it was too late. Kendra, his wife, doesn’t blame him, but says she’s numb to everything. Charlotte and Sam debate the ethics of letting Kevin donate his kidney. Love versus intelligence … should Kevin’s mental state outweigh his love and want to save his brother? Pete goes to Addison to make sure she’s alright with him marrying Violet, which she is. He offers a shoulder to lean on to talk about her and Sam if she wants. But we still don’t know what happened! Ugh. Dink comes to Sam’s office after Sam called him. Sam wants to know why he has abandoned Maya and Olivia. Dink admits he wants to help but … and then doesn’t answer and leaves. Sheldon, after having met Dave and Kendra, tells Addison the couple are stable enough for a baby. Why does Addison need to be involved? The surrogate needs to have an operation so she can carry the baby and only she can do it. Of course, because she’s freaking Addison Forbes Montgomery! Sam brings Kevin to Charlotte to inform her he’s a match for Ryan. Charlotte explains the surgery to him and what would happen if he got sick after the surgery. His love for his brother runs deep and believes his job, since he doesn’t have one, is to help his brother. Sigh. I need a tissue!

Cooper is talking about being Violet’s MOH, which he calls weird, and Charlotte agrees. Sheldon is caught spying on Charlotte by Amelia, who has nothing to do in LA but won’t go to Seattle. Amelia shrinks Sheldon and tells him to forget about Charlotte…and it happened in the elevator. Loved it. Before his operation, Ryan talks about growing up with Kevin as a brother and what happened when their parents died. Charlotte reminds him of what Kevin is doing for him. Meanwhile, Violet is picking out dresses with Cooper not wanting her to even get married. He is worried he will lose his best friend after Violet gets married. Once again, Sam is very short with Addison in the hallway with Amelia. At this point, I’m thinking there’s a secret. Addison tells Amelia she heard from Derek and he’s okay, which upsets Amelia because she hasn’t heard a word. Ryan and Kevin are both doing great after the surgery – the kidney took! Ryan promises to be different after the surgery. Kendra and Dave meet with Addison and Sharon, their hopeful surgery. Addison can fix her but lists all the risks – very high risks – and asks why in the world she would put her life at risk to help them. She lost a child the same way as them and wants to give something back.

Addison is set against doing the surgery but Naomi tries to convince her to do it. Sheldon wants to “shrink” Addison and figure out the truth. While Addison goes on and on about being in the ER with the family, Sheldon seems to think it’s about Pete choosing Violet over her. Is he right? Charlotte goes to visit Ryan and Kevin, who are playing checkers. When Kevin goes to give Ryan a hug, Ryan screams in pain and starts to code. Kevin doesn’t know what he’s done but he’s upset. Violet and Pete are finishing up the plans for the wedding and Violet starts to have second thoughts. Pete reassures her that everything is gonna be alright. Sam shows up to Dink’s basketball game .. oh, Taye Diggs, playing basketball in the heat? Yum. Anyhoo, Dink admits to Sam that Naomi has been pushing him away whenever he tries to see them. Sam shoves Dink around the court and finally, he pushes back. He finally gets the message. Amelia tells Addison that she’s going to leave, go somewhere where no one knows her and she can drink all day. Addison tries to convince her to go to Seattle first. She agrees. Will Amelia head to Grey’s?? Sam and Charlotte, meanwhile, have to tell Ryan that his body rejected the kidney – he is going to die. And it was NOT Kevin’s fault. Violet has a talk with Lucas … well, more like she asks herself if she’s doing the right thing while sitting with Lucas. That baby is adorable.

Kendra confronts Addison about why she won’t help them. Addison asks her why they want to have another baby. I think it’s at this moment Addison not only understands Kendra but sees some of herself in Kendra – and decides to help them. Sam and Charlotte explain to Kevin that he didn’t hurt Ryan and that even his good kidney couldn’t fix him. Ok…tissue again please! Ryan comes in to tell Kevin that when he gets to heaven he’s going to tell their parents how proud of him he is. Aw shucks, man. Dink shows up at Naomi’s to tell her he’s got things covered so she can go to the wedding all day. He takes his daughter from her and pushes her out of the way. Yay Dink! It’s time for the wedding. Charlotte, wearing what I can only call half a kimono, shows up and sits next to Sheldon. He’s so not okay being friends with her. In another awkward move, Addison brings Lucas down the isle and tells Naomi she’s going to help the Walkers. As Violet walks down the isle, she freaks out and runs. Because, well, she’s Violet and that’s what she does.

Cooper runs after her to see what her deal is. Instead of supporting her to marry Pete, he offers to drive her wherever she wants to go. As she’s talking about the meaning of “forever” Pete comes in. all he does is look at her and she calms down – it’s Pete. That’s all she needs. So they head back outside and get married. Addison sneaks a glance at Sam and he smiles back at her. OOHH. I feel a big ol’ steamy something coming on. But Naomi smiles at him, in a friend way of course, which I’m sure is not comfortable. Charlotte finally is done arguing with Cooper and they make up by sneaking off to a tool shed. Sheldon is drunk, which could be really funny. Pete tells Addison he’s nervous … he’s “never been good at marriage.” And later that night, we see Sam and Addison – in the bathtub together. YAY!

Next week is all about the relationships and meddling. Charlotte and Cooper walking in on Pete and Violet and Addison needing to tell Naomi about her and Sam. OOHH.

This was a great first episode back. At first, I really did think that Sam and Addison had a hatred for each other and then slowly I could see there was something sneaky going on. Love it! Talking about Sam, what a great dad! The way he went to Dink and got the truth out of him and made him realize what he had to do was great! I hope Amelia heads over to Seattle Grace because I LOVE her character. I was hoping she’d stick around, initially as a love interest for Dell (boy did I get that one wrong!) but I’m invested in her now. As for Cooper/Charlotte and Pete/Violet, it was interesting to see Cooper react just like any best friend when their best friend gets married. I remember back in season one when they were SUPERCLOSE and then last season when he took her away to clear her head … they really are BFFLs and Charlotte needs to remember that. But she also needs to look at her hand and remember she’s got the ring on her finger! I can’t wait to see where all of these storylines go.

What did you think? Will you miss Amelia? Are you hoping for a Dell-replacement? Leave your two cents below!
