According to Variety, USA Network has nabbed the syndication rights for ABC’s Modern Family, while Oxygen has secured the rights to Fox’s Glee. Both shows will begin airing in syndication in 2013.
Oxygen will also be producing a reality companion series to find a new cast member, a project previously developed for Fox that was thought to be dead, as reported last week. The show is expected to air in 2011, with the winner appearing on the third season of Glee.
Modern Family meanwhile will be heading to USA, a network mostly known for its dramas, with this being its first big comedy series acquisition.
These deals come after both freshman series proved to be rating success stories for their respective networks when they premiered this past season.
My Two Cents: It’s a gamble for the cable networks to make such high-paying deals after only one season, but I feel confident that these are two shows that will find continued success through 2013 and beyond.
Were these syndication deals done prematurely? Gleeks, how do you feel about the reality show now being a done deal?
