Breaking Glee news for all you Gleeks out there! As reported by Vulture, Fox has decided to nix plans to produce a reality competition which would have followed a group of unknowns as they vied for a spot on the hugely popular series.
The network unveiled the untitled project back in January, when interested participants were asked to submit audition videos via Myspace.
Those selected would have been a part of an American Idol-like competition, where contestants vied for one of three roles on the show, leading up to the sophomore season of the successful series.
However, Glee creator Ryan Murphy and Fox execs decided to cancel plans for the show, feeling that it would only serve as a distraction and could potentially hurt the main series.
The good news for those that participated in the online portion of the competition is that Murphy has promised that he will chose a few winners to appear on the show for at least one episode.
Fox has already renewed Glee for a third season as well.
My Two Cents: This can only be a good thing for the show, which is already at risk of overexposure and experiencing backlash from viewers. I respect Ryan Murphy and Fox for deciding themselves that they should focus on producing a quality second season before going forth with any spin-offs or films.
Was canceling plans for a new Glee reality show a good idea?

Thank goodness! I love Glee, but it’s already suffering from a too many cooks in the kitchen I think and adding a contest around it would have been too much. Like they were jumping the shark before they even got off the ground!
While I know some amazing talent is out there undiscovered (and I know some of them personally) I’m really glad the producers are focusing on making a good show instead of spreading themselves too thin.
My thoughts exactly! The Vulture article also made a good point about not wanting the same thing that happened to Heroes to happen to Glee where they had such a successful first season with a lot of buzz, then they started coming up with ideas on how to spin it off (though none actually made it to air) rather than just focusing on the quality of the main show and making sure the second season was just as good as the first.
We all know how that turned out for them, so I’m glad that the Glee producers and Fox are now trying to be smart about it and not going down that path.
