The time has come for the season finale! It was full of shocks as our favorite characters race against the Kandorians and Zod to stop the war that has begun. They won’t be leaving without a fight. Clark decides to make a choice regarding the Book of Rao.
Will he use it and make the ultimate sacrifice to save earth? How will the finale leave our heroes in order to prepare for season 10? Get ready for a shocking cliffhanger, as Smallville always delivers!
When the episode opens, we see it is the year 2013! Yes it is a glimpse into the future. Perry White is the editor of The Daily Planet, Lois is head reporter, and Lex Luthor is running for President! It is the version that everyone knows well. Lois is looking for the real Jimmy Olsen and cannot find Clark as disaster is about to strike outside, she does however see his chair swiveling… Everyone rushes to the roof and we see a glimpse of Superman flying by! It’s not real though, it is all a dream of Clark’s, or is it? The future is coming! Lois steps out onto the rooftops to meet The Blur, who is standing in the shadows; he is ready to reveal himself. It’s Zod! She doesn’t believe that he is The Blur, though he continues the charade and he asks for her help. He claims that Clark is trying to expose him and tells her to dig deeper into Clark’s life. Does she believe him? Chloe is busy at Watchtower talking to Oliver over webcam; he wants to be there with her before the war begins. Clark shows up to tell her that they are no match for the Kandorians and hands her The Book of Rao. That’s when he explains to her that it can’t be used or he will be banished as well. But is this the ultimate sacrifice for Clark in order to save the world?
Jump to the Fortress of Solitude, Zod and Tess have a showdown of their own, she is there to redeem herself for her past sins. Zod grabs her neck and tries to kill her as she pulls out Kryptonite and bashes him in the face. Before she can get away he shoots fire from his eyes and burns her. Clark shows up not too long after and sees that Zod has destroyed the crystals and now he cannot contact Jor-El or power the Book of Rao without them. When Zod steps out to face him, Clark warns Zod that his team has Kryptonite weapons to stop them. Zod speeds away and Clark finds Tess on the ground, half of her is completely burnt. He picks her up and runs her to the hospital. She later apologizes to Clark, she has more lives than a cat! Tess explains to him that the Kandorians have crystals that will power the Book of Rao and pleads him to save humanity. Those Kandorians have already started mass destruction, setting fires and destroying the world landmarks, burning Zod’s symbol into the Washington Monument, and the pyramids, and the Great Wall of China! The war is starting.
Oliver and Chloe have contacted all of the Justice Society members as they prepare for battle. They decide they won’t make a move without Clark, and he arrives in time to tell them that he’s made a decision about the Book of Rao. He will use it and save the Kandorians but will banish himself as well. They all try to advise against it, while he asks that they ban together now to protect the world. As Zod continues his destruction, he takes out all of the world’s satellites, disabling Watchtower completely. Oliver reveals to Chloe that they have their very own Satellite and just need to activate it.
Lois goes through Clark’s things at the Kent farm and finds his Kryptonian journal and is sure that she knows the truth about who his is. When he shows up he bares his soul to her, just in time for her to tell him she may be leaving to work in Africa but will stay for him. Clark decides to not tell her the truth and tells her she should leave. They have to find ways to keep them apart since we have a whole season coming up to keep the lovers interesting and not boring. Back at the hospital Tess is not having a good day as she has a seizure and dies. We see an old lady knitting out in the hall, but she gets up and goes into Tess’ room and shuts the door. Something here tells me that Tess is not gone yet, who is the old lady really? It’s obvious it’s someone in disguise.
Oliver is on his own mission to activate that satellite as Chloe keeps in contact via radio. Soon though he is attacked in the ventilation shaft as it is pounded in by unwanted visitors, Chloe believes it is the Kandorians. Oliver then confesses his love for her and reveals they are not Kandorian! Then, radio silence…what happened to Oliver? Who attacked him? Season 10 will reveal. Clark is about to use the Book of Rao and discovers that Lois has stolen it to give to Zod, when she realizes he is not The Blur he throws her hard across the street. Clark arrives just in time to punch Zod out and save Lois. He stands in the shadows and she gives him the Book back. It’s time for a passionate kiss, to Clark it’s goodbye. As he speeds off Lois then realizes…It’s Clark! Finally!
Clark takes the Book of Rao to the crystals but is of course stopped by Zod and his army, but when he reveals that Zod is the real traitor, they all turn on him instead. They ask Clark to lead them, so he activates the Book and a bright light shoots to the sky and one by one the Kandorians begin to be transported away. All except Zod, as he pulls out a dagger of blue Kryptonite. Keep in mind this kind of Kryptonite takes their powers away. So Zod and Clark have a final showdown in the rain without their powers, Zod will not be banished while holding the Kryptonite. Clark finally allows himself to be stabbed and he steps off the roof allowing the dagger to fall with him. As Zod is then banished, Clark plummets to his death below! To Be Continued…
The dreaded words! What an amazing finale, full of great slow motion and special effects. They left our heroes all in a cliffhanger of sorts, time to reboot for the next season. With blue K in Clark’s side, will he survive the fall? Who attacked Oliver and will he escape them? And now that Lois seems to know the truth, what does their future hold now? Bring on season 10! Give your two cents below!

the season 9 has been over now. but i still love this serial smallville recap. it attracts towards itself.
best season finale since season 7 cant wait for season 10!!!! ( sep 25th )
I agree! The cliffhanger caught me by surprise, I wasn’t ready for it to be over already! And to leave with him falling possibly to his death was genius. Will bring us back for more!!
Heres my possible thought on how next season will open from the end of season 9. With Clark making the ultimate sacrifice and being the savior of mankind Jor-El will come back and save Clark from dying. By sacrificing himself Clark is now really ready to accept his destiny and will be able to fly. He will start wearing the suit his mom gave him. The things that attacked Oliver are Parademons which hint to Darkseid for season 10. Plus hopefully Lex Luthor, Martha Kent, Perry White and Jimmy Olsen will return for the final season.
That is a great thought on next season! I really hope we meet the real Jimmy! They better allow him to fly soon!
Good job Addison! 🙂
Thanks Karen! This was one heck of an episode to recap, but I had fun!
Great season finale. Annette Otoole is great.Glad she’s back. Smallville and Supernatural are the only TV shows worth watching. Smallville slipped to my 2nd favorite following season 5. The writing has gotten better on the tail end of this season. I look forward to watching it next season.
I agree that the episodes got better near the end, every episode was connected. Can’t wait for season 10!!
Has Smallville really been on for nine years? Wow. I’d better start Netflixing the DVDs!! 🙂 Great reviews, Addison!
Hiya, I am really glad I have found this information. Nowadays bloggers publish only about gossips and internet and this is actually annoying. A good web site with interesting content, that’s what I need. Thanks for keeping this website, I will be visiting it. Do you do newsletters? Can’t find it.
