Well, here we are. One third of the way through the “back nine.” And what do we do? We switch reviewers on ya. Sorry! But let me introduce myself. I’m Farrah and if you’re not new to this site, you already know me. If you’re reading this on TheClubGlee, then pretty much everything you’ve read, I’ve written (and if you’re not on TCG, you should head over to the site to check it out). I love Glee (obviously, or else I wouldn’t have been chosen to write the review) and I also like to get snarky sometimes. But that’s who I am, so thanks for sticking around.
This week, I was super excited because April Rhodes (aka The Chen aka Kristin Chenoweth) was returning. On top of that, Kurt and Finn’s parents are dating (could you imagine Kurt’s excitement at the thought of living under the same roof as Finn??), Sue was being honored as the best cheer coach in two thousand years, and Brittany’s cat was reading her diary (sorry, I had to go there…). So much going on!
So, we start with Casey James…wait, what? Oh yah, another week with AI running over. Be careful Gleeks, this is the second week in a row with AI running over, so make sure to change your DVR settings as long as Glee follows AI. Ok, for real, we start with Sue talking with her newest Cheerios, Kurt and Mercedes, about their looks. Mercedes tells Sue she isn’t comfortable in the regular Cheerios outfits (this is where the “how do you two not have a show on Bravo?” comes in). Sue tells the duo that she is being interviewed by a magazine because they are naming her Cheerleading Coach of the Last Two Thousand Years. She gives Mercedes until the interviewer comes to lose 10 pounds. Will comes to Sue because the auditorium was padlocked. Did he check the sign up list? Well no, how could he … Sue was keeping it on her waist (shudder). He can’t go to Figgins thanks to Sue’s continuous blackmail so he needs to find an outside place for them to rehearse. Kurt asks Finn on wallpaper advice – weird. But it’s Kurt. Mercedes and Kurt are at lunch and while Kurt gets celery, Mercedes gets chicken and a salad. That’s not gonna get the job done! So she asks Santana and Brittany how they stay thin – they use the Sue Sylvester Master Cleanse (it’s a mockery of the actual “Cleanse” diet). Quinn overhears this all and seems sad for Mercedes. At Finn’s house, his mom is getting rid of all of her furniture and Finn flips out because he feels like she’s getting rid of his dad. His mom, Carole, tells Finn that she’s dating Kurt’s dad, Burt. DOH. Will goes to the skating rink to see about renting it out. The person running it is none other than April Rhodes! She says she smells something – a duet coming on! And we get an April/Will duet right there, center stage on the rink. But we also get them doing a couple skate, backwards and with spins. When they’re done being all cutesy, Will asks why she didn’t get to Branson and why she isn’t sober. Winds up she got so excited about going to Branson, she stopped off at a bar to relax and met an owner of a strip mall (and the skating rink) and became his mistress. She also tells Will that he can use the rink. He tells her about his divorce and wanting to rent his apartment and she wants to look at it, after she gets a bikini wax. HA!
Becky is being weighed by Sue and has lost three pounds (it’s nice to see Becky). Mercedes, on the other hand, has GAINED two. She now has four days left to lose 12 pounds. Finn finds Kurt and asks how their parents met…flashback to parent-teacher night one month prior. Kurt introduces them because they “both have dead spouses.” Kurt even gave Carole a makeover and tells Finn that they’ll most likely be roommates by midterms. Finn flips out. The club is not happy about going to the roller rink and Kurt talks to them about finding a “sense of place.” We get an amazing performance by Chris Colfer (yay!) of “A House is Not a Home,” which fittingly starts out about a chair. Wake up, Finn! Kurt sings directly to Finn and then, awkwardly, the screen transitions to Finn singing (heavily digitalized of course) to the chair. I’m gonna be honest, the whole thing was confusing. I get why Finn is singing to the chair (however weird it is), but why is Kurt singing to Finn about having a broken heart? Unless there’s a deeper meaning and he’s trying to open Finn’s heart to how his mom is feeling? But that’s a bit too deep for Glee. Whatever. Chris was amazing.
April shows up at Will’s place to test out the apartment. She also feels better sleeping with someone in the same place as her. He tells her she gets the couch and “no funny business.” While she’s settling on to the couch and they both get ready for bed, they have a cheesalicious duo of “One Less Bell to Answer.” April can’t stand being alone on the couch and makes her way into Will’s bed. But don’t worry, they only held hands – and said goodnight. Kurt, Finn, Burt and Carole go to dinner but Finn is not happy at all. Burt winds up bonding with Finn over their love of sports. Kurt feels left out when no one talks to him and when he gets home he rips off all the paint samples and his dad knows exactly what’s wrong. No matter what Burt says it seems to make things worse. Mercedes is eating lunch with Artie and Tina and yells at them about how much she is giving up to be a Cheerio and she hallucinates that they have turned into food. Then she passes out. Tina as an ice cream cone and Artie as a piece of cake saying “hold up” was priceless!
In the nurse’s office, the nurse tells Mercedes her blood pressure is low which is why she fainted. When she leaves to get Mercedes a ginger ale, Quinn appears out of nowhere with a granola bar and sympathizes with Mercedes. Quinn has changed so much, and since she’s been in the background since we came back we haven’t really gotten to see that much of her. She really opens up Mercedes’ eyes to own her beauty and her body – and being proud of herself. At the rink, April asks Will if she can come back again that night (by the way, did any one else pick up on the background music? Yes, Carrie Underwood’s version of “Home Sweet Home,” which played every week on last season’s American Idol…nice placement!). April decides to go home to her guy to tell him to leave his wife for her and thanks Will for the advice. Kurt tells Finn they need to break up their parents. Finn realizes how Kurt felt bad when he was talking sports with Burt and Finn doesn’t want them all to move on so he agrees to break them up. When Finn gets home, he decides to flush the ashes down the toilet and Carole catches him before he gets to do it. She tells him she likes Burt and Finn doesn’t know any other kind of family situation because he’s only known theirs. She talks to the urn too, but he never answers back or laughs like she wants him to. Finn won’t move in with the Himmels and says his dad wouldn’t want them to move on if he wasn’t ready. Carole gets frustrated and says Finn didn’t even know his dad (it’s true – he didn’t). She tells him it’s time to stop living with memories and ghosts and time to have a home.
The day of the pep rally for the interviewer has arrived. All of the Cheerios come out but nothing happens. Finally, Mercedes walks out and gives a speech about being a Cheerio and how it’s about being popular but it should be about something different. She asks the kids who feels fat, who feels like they’re not enough, etc…and that she feels the same away. And it’s not right and they have something to say and if the kids agree, come join them. The amazing Amber Riley starts her version of “Beautiful” and Sue is beside herself and convinced the article is going to be a bust. Even Kurt is confused. The Cheerios can sing??? Who knew they were a glee club of their own! The actual Glee club kids are all in the front row of the assembly and all join Mercedes (first up was Quinn) next to her new BFF (okay, maybe not..). It took Kurt a bit to join in, maybe because he was stunned, but he finally did. Are you crying right now? Did you cry during this scene? This was probably one of the more beautiful scenes in the show since “Imagine.” The interviewer leaves and Kurt thanks Mercedes for opening his eyes.
Sue welcomes the interviewer by trying to apologize and he admits he didn’t like her and wanted to expose her as a “coward and a cheat.” But he was wrong (not really, but okay…). The fact that she has every size and type of cheerleader makes her innovative. She says it’s inside what counts. Does Sue really believe that? Maybe. But she never shows it. Burt is at the Hudson’s and has a heart-to-heart with Finn about how he’s not trying to fill his dad’s shoes but he loves Carole and wants to take care of Carole and be there for her. Finn asks him to watch a game with him and even lets him sit in his dad’s chair. A sad Kurt watches on. April tells Will about how her man died and she got $2 million (and she sobered up – no drinks in 45 minutes!) and is going to head to Broadway. Oh, and she bought the auditorium – it’s now called The April Rhodes Civic Pavilion. She gets all dolled up and sings a song on the stage to end the show.
Next week is the “Glist!” The hot list of the Gleeks with guest stars Molly Shannon and Olivia Newton-John AND some Vanilla Ice is being thrown around. Can’t wait!
So, episode three of the back nine is in the books. And it wasn’t a great chapter – it was okay. I loved the stories the episode were trying to tell but found it completely boring. Glee is relevant and hip and besides Carrie Underwood’s background music, I had no clue what any of these songs were. And nothing was upbeat. Although, on the plus side, I was a bit excited to have an episode not completely all about Rachel. Last week, Mercedes and Kurt were upset to not have solos so they went to the Cheerios to be in the spotlight for a duo and this week they each get solos, just not in the club. The Finn/Kurt story line was interesting – and real – and while Finn is in his own universe, Kurt is obviously in so much pain not having anyone in his life he can turn to as a role model. He loves his dad, his dad loves him, but they have that bond missing. If Burt and Carole work out, I think the Carole/Kurt relationship would be great. Anyway, I’ve written a lot, so tell me what you think now. Leave your two cents below!

I don’t tweet or anything like that, but if I did, I would be tweeting twenty-seven thousand ovations for Amber Riley this episode. She gave my shivers!
I agree! With everything. But especially that Chris was AMAZING – his voice is incredible!! I liked Amber too but Chris blew me away.
But the episode did seem unfocused and a bit sad.
I love Glee. I listen to it on my Ipod all the time. But we almost have to acknowledge that this is NOT a happy show. It’s satire and funny, true, but most of the themes and resolutions aren’t uproariously happy.
I do want to say that Kurt broke my heart in this hour. I’ve seen several online folks that saw Kurt looking in that window at the end as “stalkerish.” And I think that couldn’t be further from the truth. I think it was more about him LITERALLY being on the outside looking in. And he broke my heart.
I do hope his unrequited crush on Finn resolves soon (not mentioning specific upcoming spoilers, but :insert smile here:) as I think it’s gone on a little too long. But I was happy to get a break from the Rachel/Finn show! (I love Leah Michele, I just think the show is straying a little far from ensemble).
To summarize, I love Glee.
I agree with you Karen about Kurt. I didn’t see him as a stalker but totally as the outsider looking in. Chris Colfer was, hands down, the shining star of this episode.
I get that Glee is a satire but thus far, they’ve handled everything with humor and jokes, even Quinn’s pregnancy. The episode just didn’t fit the Glee mold.
Next week looks like we get back to the Gleeness.
