I had several weak singers all picked out to be eliminated—didn’t you? But none of them was Joe Munoz, who did a good job with “You and I Both.”
And I would have placed a huge bet that Tim Urban would be saying “bye bye.” He couldn’t hit the high notes in “Apologize,” and half the song was high notes!
I just don’t get it.
But the other eliminated contestants were expected and good choices. For the women, Janell Wheeler and Ashley Rodriguez sang their swan songs (I still hate this tradition: You were horrible, so let’s hear you sing it horribly again!). And joining Joe in men being voted off the AI island? That ‘70s throwback Tyler Grady. No big surprise there as his vocals were uneven and his dancing a jerky mess.
In between eliminations, two S8 contestants came back to the Kodak Theater. Allison Iraheta sang her newest single, “Scars.” I liked the new longer hair but where did this huge catch in her voice come from? She still has that cute, bubbly personality and a spectacular, throaty voice.
And S8 champ Kris Allen showed video of his trip to Haiti as American Idol Gives Back starts gearing up. And what better way than donating 100 percent of his haunting performance of “Let It Be” to the cause? I remembered Kris’ clear, sweet voice, but had forgotten how his connection to the lyrics takes a song up several notches.
I forgot to mention the overstuffed group number, “American Boy,” but really, was it worth remembering? No, I didn’t think so.
I think Tim Urban, Jermaine Sellers and Adam Lambert (who was bleeped out after finding out he was staying) need to be ready to pack their bags. It’s a little tougher to pick weak links in the women.
