Well hello there, fellow Seattle Grace lovers and friends. Tom is busy this crossover week so I’m here to fill in. For those not familiar with me, I’m Farrah and I cover Private Practice. So if you were one of those fans that followed Addison to Oceanside Wellness then you know me well. If not, then hello new friend! My style is a bit different than Tom’s. While I appreciate his time line and commentary, I’m more of a storyteller and will insert my comments (sometimes snarky ones!) in the middle.
This week will be no exception. While at first the crossover was made to be seen as this dramatic, full-cast crossover, as the time got closer, it became quite clear it was just about Mark and his daughter and grandchild. It was just this past week that we got to see the preview of Mark and Addy getting down and dirty, which totally burst my Addy/Sam bubble (more on that when hour two rolls around). When we left our Seattle Grace doctors way back when in December (although for them it was after New Years), Mark and Lexie were dealing with the arrival of Sloan, Callie and Arizona were happily together and thanks to the merger working at the same hospital again, the Chief was drinking and only Meredith knew his secret (despite Bailey knowing something is up due to a botched surgery, she doesn’t know what it is), Izzie is still MIA and Owen’s flame confessed her love and he said no thanks, I heart Cristina. Got that? Okey dokey.
The normal Meredith voiceover tells us about change as she and the chief look at old surgery videos. She’s still keeping his secret, even from Derek. Mark is all happy with Lexie and he asks her to give Sloan an ultrasound. She agrees and then she gets down and dirty with him, just as Sloan walks in. Hello, knock much? Lexie seems to look older (as in tired and aged), anyone else feel that way? When Sloan takes over the bathroom, Lexie heads to Cristina/Callie’s apartment and forgets to knock herself and walks in on Callie and Arizona in a steamy shower. Nice way to come back from winter hiatus Shonda, nice job. Owen’s flame, Charlie is it? No, Teddy, my bad…Gives Cristina her first solo cardio surgery, which is everything Cristina has been working for since, well, forever (flashback of her practicing with Burke flashes through my mind right about now. :SIGH:). Despite getting a bunch of money from Mark earlier in the morning, Sloan tries to hit up Lexie for more money as Lexie gives her the ultrasound. Lexie is not good at hiding her “I’m super nervous because something is wrong” face and says they need to go up to OB so a more qualified person can give her the ultrasound. While this is going on, a high-profile football player is brought in after a hard hit during a game. Derek is familiar with him, having worked on him before. When Mark attacks Lexie for making Sloan feel bad for the ultrasound situation, Lexie tells Mark something is wrong with the baby. Sloan, being a kid, can’t handle all the information being thrown at her, especially considering the OB chick answers one of her questions with “Um, I dunno.” So Mark goes to the best source he knows: Addison Montgomery. Of course.
Anyone else sick of The Deep End commercials? Jeez! We get it.
Addy arrives rather quickly and starts her time at SG making fun of Mark being a grandpa. Bailey is her perky self and Addy suggests Derek set her up with a man. Yah, that will work. Football player needs a transfusion and Bailey and Derek will work on him. Teddy takes Cristina in to meet her patient, a wacky lady who nitpicks at everything and has a zillion allergies and decides to change her surgery at the last minute. Addison suggests surgery on Sloan’s baby but Arizona suggests going full-term and doing rehab. I’m glad they brought in Arizona to do the pros/cons. Alex is walking the halls with Reed, one of the Mercy chicks who proposes a sort of trade-sex-for-surgery idea. Desperate much? Charlie, remember him? I miss him when he was hanging around with Izzie, but anyway…he tries to reason with her but she doesn’t want to listen. Derek brings Bailey the new radiologist that has Tom’s scans. She is not in the mood to be set up and goes on a Bailey-Nazi rant. I love harsh Bailey. While she’s doing that, she gives her cases to Derek, including the Chief’s gallbladder botched surgery followup. This is abnormal and raises a red flag for Derek. Weird patient even carries around a picture of what he looked like after the surgery, when he turned all yellowy. The CT scan for the football player shows he needs to have his spleen taken out and when they tell him he’ll be fine and back in the game next season, he has a super uber panic attack.
Meredith confronts Alex about the Reed/sex situation and he throws the fact that she used to trade Derek for sex in her face (uh, I don’t remember that, do you?). Mer calls him the “old Alex” (agree!) and he tells her Mer/Der’s post-it marriage is more than Alex/Izzie’s big church wedding. Despite them being married still, in his mind they’re not. When Derek confronts Bailey about Sheldon (the Chief’s botched patient), instead of admitting to what happened, she says she has a “thing” for him. Of course Derek doesn’t buy it. Back in nutty lady’s room, she says the new valve, a pig valve, is not for her. So now she wants a cow valve, because the pig valve didn’t “speak” to her. She wants to see both of them so she can see which one she has a kinship with. Is this lady even stable enough for surgery? Jeez. Derek asks the Chief to do the surgery on Tom, the football player, since it’s high-profile. He says no at first but then agrees after Derek persists. You can tell he’s going to back out though. He’ll never lift a scalpel again (in my opinion). Meredith calls Izzie, who doesn’t answer obviously, about Alex and Cristina gets the vales she needs to reassure her patient. During Sloan’s surgery there is a possible chance of complication so Mark tells Addison to stop the surgery. Instead of acting like a doctor, he acts like a father. Good for Sloan but bad for Sloan. Now she has a father that cares but her baby is still in trouble.
Derek goes to make sure the Chief is doing Tom’s surgery and finds Bailey instead of the Chief. All kinds of bells and whistles are going off and he asks Bailey what is going on. No answer (but then again, Bailey doesn’t know the real truth). Mark apologizes to Addy for calling off the surgery and she tells him he acted like a parent, as much as he wants to deny it. She offers to do it again but he says no and heads back to LA. Cristina brings nutty lady (she has a name…Ruthie) the two valves and she can’t pick one. Cristina finally gets all cardio on her and tells her “PICK ONE!” She picks pig and we have a surgery. During his follow up visit, Tom finally admits to Derek he’s scared to play football again and that’s why he had the panic attack. Since the birth of his son he can’t concentrate on the game and he doesn’t want to get hurt so bad he can’t remember him or die. Derek suggests retiring but Tom can’t yet. I really liked this Tom character and the guy who played him. I’d love to see him more often. But back to more important subjects, Cristina is finally doing her surgery and everyone is watching in the observation room. Alex and Reed are making their deal in front of everyone and Meredith interrupts but it doesn’t last long as Cristina’s patient begins to crash on the table, as Teddy sits idly by reading a magazine.
Derek goes to Callie about Tom’s knee but it’s not bad enough to do surgery on, so Derek suggests doing the surgery anyway. This debate could go on forever, but one can argue that if he doesn’t end Tom’s career now, Tom could be worse off. But more pressing topics are going on in Cristina’s OR as she is asking Teddy for help who won’t give it. Owen comes in to try to step in and Cristina kicks him out. She snaps into cardio mode, walks through the steps of the surgery and gets the heart working again. Meredith brings up missing the surgery to the Chief, who is in a trance while watching the old surgery videos. He’s just off in another world. Mark tells Sloan about the surgery and she has a breakdown about her baby and Lexie suggests they go to LA to do the surgery. On a whim, Mark invites Sloan to stay with Lexie and Mark after the baby is born and they will all raise the baby together. Lexie is NOT happy about this.
Callie is in the OR drilling Tom’s knee while Reed and Alex argue over operating time. Callie is still a bit upset over it and Derek reassures him that Tom left the game a while ago. Owen confronts Teddy about the OR situation and she says it was all pure teaching and she would never let a patient die. I’m bored with her. Can’t we bring back Third Watch so Kim Raver can have somewhere to go? Reed meets Alex at the on-call room and he tells her he won’t do the trade and if she wants to do that, find someone else. Then we quickly head to the Mark/Sloan/Lexie house and Mark tries to compare him taking in Sloan to Lexie offering her livier to her dad. Uh, no comparison Mark, sorry. Lexie isn’t ready for what Mark is taking on and by all means, I don’t blame her! When he tells her not to make her choose, he does any way, and Lexie is dunzo! Derek confronts Meredith about the Chief, saying he knows something is up and asks her if she sees it too or does she know and just not telling him. Then Owen finds Cristina to tell her Teddy is leaving SG just as Cristina is telling him how alive she felt in the OR with the heart in her hand. Okay, so we have one of those end-of-the-show montage-like endings so try to keep up. Derek keeps questioning Meredith who won’t look him in the eye—Lexie moves back to Meredith’s house and so does Alex, to the same room where Lexie has landed with a bottle of wine (see where this is going?)—Derek keeps pressing Mer—Lexie isn’t ready to be a grandma and wants to do Jell-O shots and something stupid and Alex has an idea…get down and dirty!—Meredith stumbles for her words and says she’s been in denial of sorts—Cristina runs through the hospital looking for Teddy and finds her, offering her everything to stay at SG. It’s one of those Cristina gets all teary-eyed moments over surgery and Teddy says she wants Owen and Cristina says “fine, take him!” before she can even realize what has come out of her mouth—Meredith tells Derek the Chief has been drinking.
The previews for next week’s GA are buried in the episode of PP, so for the sake of getting this posted, I will come back and edit “next week on…” And here I am with the info Izzie’s back and she’s hugging on Alex until he says she slept with someone else. I really don’t care about anyone else. We’ve waited HOW LONG for KH to come back and wrap up the Izzie drama? Also Mark tells Lexie about his romp with Addy, but he told Addy he loved Lexie, so who knows what will happen there, especially now that Sloan will probably go back to her mom or put the baby up for adoption. SO MUCH. SO MUCH!
As for this week, holy bejeezus, and we’re not done! Mark and Sloan still have to crossover to LA! When will the Chief step down? What will happen to Owen/Cristina/Teddy? In the preview, Izzie comes back but will it be all warm and fuzzy? Will Derek confront the Chief? So many questions! Leave your two cents below!
