Senor Chang is losing it, giving the students more homework than they can possibly handle. The study group nominates Jeff to talk Senor Chang down and get them out of the essay. Will that tactic work? Let’s find out.
Turns out, Senor Chang’s wife has kicked him to the curb, and he’s been taking out his rage/frustration on his class. Jeff tells him that now that he’s single he’ll realize how great it is, and Chang agrees to go out on the town. In return, Jeff doesn’t have to do his 20 page essay. After a night of partying it up, Jeff lies to the group and tells them that he tried, but they all have to turn in a paper. In class however, Senor Chang announces that Jeff has already turned in his paper, and that there will also be a pop quiz on Monday. The group is immediately suspicious. Their suspicions are confirmed when Jeff and Chang come out of the classroom laughing – Jeff doesn’t have to take the quiz if he hangs out with Chang again. The group kicks Jeff out, and he storms away.
While bonding over grading papers, Senor Chang tells Jeff that he’s just so lonely, and that Jeff can’t ever stop hanging out with him. Jeff gets an idea, so during a concert with a band named Green Day (that is actually an Irish band), the first song is dedicated to Senor Chang…and Senorita Chang. Jeff invited her, and she dances with husband, taking him back. Chang is so happy about this that he calls off the essay.
Meanwhile, Abed and Troy are partners in a lab experiment where they have to get a rat to respond to a song. Abed names their rat Fievel, and the song is the duet ‘Somewhere Out There’. It’s worth mentioning that Troy is terrified of rats, and he accidentally knocks over his cage and Fievel escapes. The exterminator is set to come, and Abed cannot have Fievel being killed. Troy refuses to help find him though because, well, fear. Abed tries to reason with him, explaining that friends would do this for each other, but Troy is under the impression that Abed is HIS friend so he does things for HIM. Oh, Troy. Eventually though, he does prove his friendship by participating in a rousing duet and Fievel comes out of his hiding place, crawling right up Troy’s leg.
Also, Shirley has to give a speech on brownies and making them marketable, and in a shocking turn of events, Pierce coaches her through it and actually gives her good, solid advice.
In the bumper, Pierce, Abed, and Troy are getting ready for an epic water gun fight, but Pierce’s gun is tiny. He’s made fun of until he sprays them in the eyes…with pepper water.
I don’t know about you all, but I was caught both laughing and crying during the end of this episode. It was so touching, and the singing was both sweet and hilarious. Let me know what you think by leaving your Two Cents in the comments!

I LOVE SENOR CHANG! I agree – this was a sweet little episode. Though at the end, I was waiting for Abed to say something like: “Wow… the solutions to all our problems converged at the same time into a neat little package… It’s like a TV show…”
Yes, this episode was hilarious! El Tigre makes it even funnier.
It’s awesome to see how talented the actors are who play Abed and Troy. The duet was great.
I really like how they emphasized the group as a whole and their friendship, instead of beating down the idea of any love interests (i.e. Jeff & Britta…or Troy & Annie…or Pierce & Shirley…or Jeff & Annie…you get the idea) which many times leads to the death of a show.
Oh and the opening with Annie getting sent out to the hall and ending up outside the window trying to get the assignment from Senor Chang was hilarious.
Thanks for the great review!
I agree – I was really worried that one relationship was going to try and over power the show, but I’ve been delightfully surprised!
