Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy; what an episode! First off, let me thank Farrah for writing the review last week for the show. You did a wonderful job! But I’m back, and happier than ever to be. Tonight’s episode was one for the books, so let’s not waste any more time…

Ted, Lily, and Marshall: These three go together like the Three Amigos. The episode starts with Ted receiving Barney’s porn collection, and the three of them commenting on Barney’s “relationship gut” which I will get to soon. As Ted is “throwing away the box” he trips, and a tape magically flies into the VCR and begins to play. About 10 seconds into the movie, Barney cuts in, telling Ted that the only reason he has possession of these tapes is if he is dead, or in a committed relationship, in which he wants out. Ted shows this to Marshall and Lily, and the three of them collectively decide to let them ride it out. However, that isn’t as easy as it seems. Barney and Robin are in desperate need of a breakup, and I’ll explain why in a moment. They devise a plan to break them up, and Lily has it all figured out. She wants to recreate the four biggest fights they’ve ever had. These fights are about old girlfriends, dirty dishes, storm troopers, and finally, USA vs. Canada. To do this, she’s devised an ingenious plan. First, she enlists the help of Alan Thicke (who made a cameo appearance). He’s old friends with Robin, and they are still in touch. She also brings in Meg (a girl from the third season that wanted Barney in a committed relationship). She hires a “storm trooper” who ended up being just a regular robot, and finally, she asks the busboy to walk by with dirty dishes at a specific time. Her plan didn’t work, and Barney and Robin end up kissing. But that’s not the whole story…

Barney and Robin: BARNEY IS GETTING FAT. He gradually puts on weight by eating his emotions. It was simply marvelous to see that! However, as this is happening, Robin is looking like crap. Her hair isn’t brushed, her makeup isn’t done, and her face is breaking out. They are clearly not happy, and both need an out. They eat at the same diner all the time, which is the stage for Lily’s grand plan. However, before it ever was put into motion, they both looked at their reflections in the mirror; and this is when they decide to put an end to their misery. However, instead of breaking up, they decide to become friends again. This all ends with an overwhelming amount of dinner guests (Alan Thicke, Meg, a storm trooper, and a busboy), and then, one final kiss. At the end, Robin is back to normal, as is Barney (probably a crash diet).

I’m very sad that the relationship is over, but I’m happy that Barney is back. Also-to a SURPRISING TWIST…Alan Thicke wasn’t only in “Sandcastles in the Sand” with Robin, but was also in a Variety Show!!! Barney, right after finding this out, went running out of the bar to find the footage. I definitely cannot wait to see it myself!

I LOVED THIS EPISODE! What did you think about it? Put your TwoCents in the comments! I’ll see you all next week.

  1. Karen says:

Ted had a throwaway line that Barney and Robin didn’t let themselves go that badly (in reality), the exaggerated versions were what their friends saw. (Like Robin’s older boyfriend that Ted saw as ‘ancient’ in Slapsgiving)

  2. Rachel says:

Aw, Karen – you beat me to it! Anyway – great episode, but I’m gonna miss Robin/Barney as well. At least we have the “normal” Barney back… look out women of NYC!

  3. Farrah says:

Now that we’re not gonna be focusing on Barney and Robin, anyone else think we’ll start to see the “mother?” All the articles before the season said this season we’d meet her so .. I’m hoping! But I will miss Barney and Robin!
