Grey’s Anatomy
Good Mourning

Original Air Date: Sept 24, 2009

What’s up Grey’s Anatomy fans? It’s been a long summer but we’re back, baby! Who will live? Who will die? Who will sleep with whom? All these questions and many, many more wait for you in the new season of *drum roll please*… Grey’s Anatomy!

Also, I’m going to try something new. Instead of longggg paragraph reviews I’m gonna try this in uber-summarized time line form to see if that’s more palatable to my awesome readers. Within this timeline I’ll ask questions for my readers to answer in the comment section. If you like the new format, or if you think it sucks and I should never, ever do it again, you should also leave that in the comments.

Ok, let’s get this party started- whoop whoop!

Hour 1…

9:01 – (Day 1) Izzie comes back to life. George is brain dead.

9:07 – Little Grey thinks dead George is too short. Callie checks a freckle on his hand. Yes, it’s George.

9:10 – Ambulance brings a girl in who was in a speed boat accident. Both her legs were amputated in the propeller. Her friends found her arms- and brought them. That was nice, I guess.

9:12 – A mom brings her son, Andy, in for some tests. Not sure why yet. Mom is concerned because everyone at Seattle Grace seems distracted, and they are, because George just died. This Mom was in something… and I can’t figure it out… maybe Parenthood? [readers?]

9:13 – George’s Mom can’t decide if George will donate his organs or not. She asks Callie to do it. She doesn’t know. She has to ask Izzie. But Izzie just came back from the dead and Alex doesn’t really want to fill her in on the bad news yet.

9:14 – Some guy in a suit who was on another show [readers?] offers Derek the job of Chief of Surgery.

9:19 – Alex tells Izzie. She stays calm. Tells Callie what organs George would donate- everything. Hello, the guy jumped in front of a bus to save some girl he didn’t know, I could have told you that he would donate everything. DUH!

9:21 – Meredith looks chubby. Amputee chick’s “friends” leave to catch a show in Vegas or something. Wow, solid friends, sure hope their plane crashes! 😀

9:23 – Izzie says goodbye to George. Arizona sends Andy home with some muscle relaxants for a minor case of something or other. [readers?]

9:24 – Derek tells Chief about the coup that the board is planning against him and that they asked him to take the job. That was big of Derek. Lexi is ridiculously pretty. Like, seriously, wow.

9:29 – (Day 7) Christina and Hunt are almost back to getting freaky but he is still in therapy and can’t get nookie, I guess.

9:32 – George’s Funeral. Izzie leaves to… laugh her ass off (apparently)… with Christina, Meredith and Alex. And I thought I was morbid. I guess we all grieve in our own way. Or something

9:35 – Chief asks Derek to back off so he can think a bit.

9:36 – Mark asks Lexi if George was hung (seeing as how he did actually sleep with a lot of the hotties).

9:41 – (Day 10) Andy is back with some more serious pains (probably not of the growing pains variety). Amputee (how do I not know her name yet?) still can’t move her arm and she’s writing fake e-mails to her Mom so that her Mom doesn’t know she was in a boating accident. Clara! There we go, that’s her name.

9:45 – Callie wants a promotion but can’t have it because some dinosaur is sticking around a wee bit past retirement. Callie storms out and lambasts Chief- in front of the board guy (I totally figured out where he is from- did you, readers?).

9:51 – (Day 11) Arizona orders special tests for Andy but Chief buts the kibosh on that because Andy’s insurance won’t cover it and the hospital can’t afford it (and he is under pressure by the board to ‘tighten his ship’).

9:53 – (Day 13) Callie is having a breakdown. Mark tries to comfort her.

9:54 – Derek and Meredith are getting dirty on the stairs when Alex and Izzie come home. Derek gives Alex keys to his trailer. Bye bye, Alex – Hello, privacy!

9:55 – George’s Mom wants to know why George joined the Army in war time. So she asks Owen. He gives a good speech.

9:57 – Clara is mad they saved her life because she only has one leg and one arm. She really seems to want to die and she starts waving around and bleeding and stuff.

Hour 2…

10:00 – (Day 20) Nothing happens.

10:01 – (Day 21) Clara is off suicide watch. I like her accent. She needs another surgery. Clara says no. (“No poo bag- NO!”)

10:02 – Arizona still trying to get the 3D MRI for Andy. Chief says if they want to front the $5,000 bill then they can do it, otherwise, they need to come with him to the board meeting and explain why they are running the hospital like a charity. Arizona starts to cry.

10:03 – (Day 22) Callie is starting at Mercy West. Lexi and Mark are moving in together- across the street from Callie.

10:05 – Chief is reciting his speech to the board in his car, runs a red light, and gets hit. He seems OK.

10:10 – Chief gets taken to Mercy West and runs into Callie. Haha, revenge is a b*tch, and Callie lets an intern work on Chief’s leg.

10:11 – (Day 23) The girl George saved is having trouble sleeping. And Meredith keeps passing her sitting on a bench. I think she’s going to kill herself. That would be a waste, given George died to save her, right? [readers?]

10:15 – Andy and his mom show up at Mercy West as a referral and they land with Callie.

10:22 – Callie approved the test for Arizona but it found nothing.

10:23 – Lexi walks in on Derek and Meredith humping on the kitchen countertops. Nice.

10:30 – (Day 36) Chief is being a bit shady about everything. Derek wants to know what is going on but Chief is not helping out.

10:34 – Derek helps Arizona get another test for Andy. Andy needs the bottom of his spinal cord snipped because it’s attached or something and when it grew it started to hurt. Andy’s Mom is pretty ecstatic.

10:36 – Izzie’s cancer is not spreading any more. She is living with Cancer. But she doesn’t seem thrilled. She should be.

10:41 – (Day 37) Arizona and Derek fix Andy. Clara has stopped doing physical therapy. Owen lifts her up a bit by explaining how he felt (referencing Iraq) but he doesn’t even seem to get to her.

10:43 – (Day 39) The girl who George saved still won’t leave the hospital bench so Izzie gives her a swift talking to and says she needs to have enough respect for George to figure out her life and live it because George isn’t around anymore to do so. You go, Izzie. You go!

10:50 – Clara starts trying to walk again with her fake foot. It’s about time. Oh and now she’s ready to call her Mom so she’s starting to be less annoying.

10:52 – Izzie demands sex from Alex. EPIC WIN. Oh then it turns into an emotional scene. Kinda cool in an Alex-Izzie kind of way.

10:58 – (Day 40) Chief announces that Seattle Grace is merging with Mercy West and that there may be job cuts. Derek realizes he made a big mistake not taking the Chief job, I think.

Well, readers, that does it for the season premiere of Grey’s. In general I thought it was OK, albeit predictable, but OK. There was some solid sentiment and some funny parts but I think two hours was a bit excessive, actually. What did you think, readers? And remember, what’d you think of the new format? Love it? Hate it?

  1. Farrah says:

While most of the events of the episode were leaked far before the actual airing, I think the actors did a great job (as usual). The writing is great and the writers stayed true to the characters. Christina avoiding going with George to the surgery and not letting it out until the very end? Classic C. Love that Alex is still tortured, even after Izzie’s love and all. The whole Mark/Lexie living across the hall from Torres/sometimes Arizona I think will make for some hilarious scenes.

BTW, Meredith is chunky because Ellen Pompeo was about 6 months pregnant when they were filming.

And yes, Andy’s mom played the acting-out daughter in Parenthood who dates Keanu Reeves and hates everyone. 🙂

    I liked your format, although I am a first-time reader. 🙂

    Farrah-
    Thanks for reading! 🙂
Yeah, the actors did do a pretty good job, I agree, though I was a little distracted by Lexi’s ridiculous good looks- like seriously, prettiest girl on the show- am I wrong???

haha I knew Meredith looked fat… that explains why there were no body shots of her. Oh, clever Hollywood!

Yes, Andy’s Mom was totally that daughter. I also figured out how I recognized the board chairman… but I want my readers to figure it out, too, and post it here. First one gets a prize*!

    *there is no prize.

      Hi Annette-
      Thanks for reading!

And Nice- you are correct! I figured it out half way through the episode. I was thinking ’24’ but was like “wait… who was he on 24” but then I figured out I was confused because he was a federal agent type on X-Files.

What’d you think of the Grey’s episode?

      • Annette says:

I knew it was Mitch Pileggi (sp?) as soon as he started talking – loved, loved, loved him on the X-Files (which I never missed when it was on, one of my all time favorites).

I’m not so sure about Grey’s. I might be sort of over it, but I’ll probably still keep watching. George was my favorite character, and the show’s just not the same without him. And I just don’t like Izzie and Alex together – I’ve never liked Alex period. I do however, like Arizona and I’m glad they’ve decided to keep her on as a regular.

  3. Thomas Nikl says:

I have all the X-Files seasons but am only like in the middle of Season 4. I always start and stop and it takes me forever to get through a season!!

Grey’s has the potential to get better this year… but we’ll see.
