The second season of The L Word gave us some new characters, new story lines and new pairings. What once used to be isn’ t anymore and what you never expected to happen is actually happening. But I guess that during the seasons the fans have been surprised more then once by the powers that be and the choices that where made where not always what the fans wanted.
The second season started off with a revelation of massive proportions, Bette and Tina’s relationship has been going downhill from the moment Tina became pregnant the first time. With each passing episode we saw Bette and Tina getting further away from each other. When Tina lost the baby and Bette was completely consumed by her work and later by her affair with the ‘carpenter gal’ it eventually meant the end of their relationship.
With Bette and Tina no longer together the group dynamics between all of the friends is strained to say the least. Because Tina hasn’t found a place to stay she is still at living with Bette. But somehow she managed to hide from Bette that she is four months pregnant. Bette obviously is shocked especially when she turns out to be the last to know. She’s even more pissed off when she finds out that Helena Peabody ( from the Peabody Foundation, a foundation which used to give grand donations to the CAC when Helena’s mother was in charge )is doing everything in her power to court Tina. Tina meanwhile is working for a foundation which helps people who can use some assistance. Tina send in a proposal and is receiving this years biggest donation from the Peabody Foundation while the CAC is getting nothing. Bette had obviously counted on the money to buy new artwork and the whole situation doesn’t make the situation between her and Tina any easier especially when Helena is getting more and more in the way.
Alice and Dana are having a very passionate affair but Dana is in fact engaged to Tonya. Her very annoying girlfriend. Tonya is taking care of benefits and promotion of Dana’s tennis career. Alice wants Dana to break up with Tonya, a choice which most fans liked. Tonya’s character is one of those people who you just love to hate much like Jenny. She has this annoying high pitched voice and she is constantly taking control of the situation. It seems as if Dana is suffocating in the situation between her and Tonya, the added stress of her affair with Alice doesn’t make it any easier. But Dana is not the only one who has a secret to reveal.
Talking about Jenny, she is now the owner of the house she used to live in with Tim. Tim left her when he found out about her betrayal with Marina. Since Jenny can’t pay for the rent on her own she is living together with Shane sharing the house while a guy named Mark is living in the shed which used to be her writing studio. He is a documentary maker and finds the fact that Shane and Jenny are lesbians who live together very interesting he is constantly filming them and trying to get them to confess certain information to him. Unknown to them he has the house bugged with camera’s filming them 24/7. Marc finds it especially interesting when he finds out that Carmen, Jenny’s current girlfriend used to be Shane’s girlfriend. In the whole situation of them living together he is the typical male who hopes that one day he will be invited for a threesome.
Bette however is dealing with other issues, while she is at an art exposition she is once again surprised by Helena Peabody. Who tells Bette that Leo Herrerah is coming to LA to help out the CAC, Bette is shocked to say the least and she thinks that CAC is breaching her contract by hiring Leo as a consultant. She leaves the exposition in a hurry to ask Franklin for an explanation in the middle of the night. Obviously he is not very pleased when she arrives at his door.
Her next step is to call Tina, to tell her that she did a stupid thing. After all Tina knows her the best and understands her but their situation has changed and when Bette starts bitching and moaning about Helena Tina tells her that what she does with Helena or anyone else for that matter is none of Bette’s business.
Tina is asked to attend the Peabody Foundation dinner by Helena which is held at a beautiful hotel. But the people around her are not all that interesting and Helena who has been watching Tina all night gets up and excuses herself. She leaves the table, a mere minutes later Tina’s cellphone rings, it is Helena telling her to join her at the pool. Helena seduces Tina with her incredible charm and they have a steamy hot make out scene in the pool.
Meanwhile you see Bette who is trying to come to terms with her feelings, she decides to go to Tina’s new apartment but when she arrives there with a handful of handpicked flowers Tina is not home. If Bette only knew that she was making out with Helena in a pool at a fancy hotel, I am pretty sure that she would have blown a gasket.
So you might be surprised that I am so smitten with the whole turn of events when it comes to the Bette and Tina situation. Yes I do ship Bette/Tina but I surprised myself by loving the whole Helena dynamic added to it. I love it and I was each week looking forward to the next part in this developing romance.
These are finally my two cents about this episode of The L Word, do you agree or disagree with me. My next review will be ‘Late, later, latent’ episode 2×09.
