I really like being right. And I called way back at the beginning of the season that we were going to see brother against brother. The tag line “ Who is the real Monster” pretty much says it all. Sam may have demon blood in him, but the way Dean treated Sam was horrible.
The beginning part of the episode revolved around Sam tripping because he is on withdrawal from not getting demon blood. Sam’s minds plays tricks on him as he is visited by practically everybody except for the ghost of Christmas past. Alistair is the first. Sam thinks he is being tortured by him (the gross meter went way up!) but when we see the reality of the situation, Sam is alone. After he snaps out of it, he has an argument with his younger self how he was not going to go into becoming a hunter and how he was going to make a better life for himself than Dad and Dean have. Young Sam even blames the older version for the death of Jessica and his chance to have a real life.
While Sam has conversations with himself, Bobby gets a call from Rufus about all the seals that are being broken. Where are the Angels when you need them? Dean goes to find out what the heck is going on. He calls for Castile, who finally shows up. You can tells Castile is different. He is distant and tells Dean very little. He says that Sam can stop Lillith, but he would have to drink so much demon blood, he would become one himself. The only option is for Dean to serve God and the Angels. Uh oh, did anyone else smell a setup at this point? I have a feeling that no good will come from this! He makes Dean swear his allegiance and tells him they will let him know when they are ready for him.
Sam’s next visitor is his mom (who is not the same mom they have had in past years, but a very close look alike). She tells Sam how he is doing what he needs to do and how proud she is of him (obviously his subconscious trying to justify his actions). She tells Sam that Dean is too weak to understand and not to let anything stand in his way, especially Dean.
As time passes, Sam looks at himself in the mirror and sees his veins turning black. Sam is screaming as Dean and Bobby talk. When it is silent, they rush to the locked room. Sam is being thrown around the room by an unknown force. They restrain him and leave to talk about what is next. Bobby thinks that they are killing Sam by not giving him the blood. Dean refuses to let it happen though. As they talk, Sam wakes up and begins talking to “Dean”. “Dean” asks why Sam did it. Sam insists for revenge, although “Dean” is back. As Sam and his hallucination talk, we go back and fourth between his conversation and the real Dean and Bobby’s conversation. Everything that Sam hears “Dean “say, the true Dean is saying the opposite. “I would do anything for my brother. He is not a monster.” But Sam hears Dean tell him that he is a monster. This is definitely where things take a turn for the worst.
Sam lays there, and suddenly the door opens. But who would let him out? Castile! I knew they were up to something! Sam leaves and heads straight to find Ruby. But not before Bobby tries to stop him. Knowing Bobby won’t shoot, he knocks him out and leaves.
Castile stands on a bridge, looking awfully guilty, as Anna appears. He tells her she should not be there. She asks why he let Sam out. Angels arrive and take Anna way. Castile is really turning out to be the bad guy now.
Sam sits in a hotel and Ruby arrives. She tells him that she has a lead on Lillith. Sam throws her down on the bed and takes out her knife. We find them in bed together and Ruby says his appetite has increased, but that is good as he needs to do this to stop Lillith. There are only two seals left, and Lillith has to open the last. If they kill her, she cannot open the seal. Ruby tracked down Lillith’s “personal chef”, which turns out to be a maternity nurse at the hospital. Yes, that means Lillith eats babies! Yikes!
Bobby figures out where Sam is and Dean heads there. Bobby insists to Dean not to get mad at Sam, to try to get through to him. However when Dean shows up to the hotel and finds Ruby, he tries to kill her. Sam shows up and there is an all out brawl between them. Sam even holds Dean down, choking him. Oh, this is NOT a good sign! As Sam stands up to leave, Dean tells him if he does, he can never come back. And this is the set up for the big Heaven Versus Hell smack down that we will probably see next week for our Season Finale!
What did YOU think about this episode? Leave your TwoCents in the comments. See you next week.

I think something’s not right in Angeltown. I don’t think that Castiel’s turning out to be a bad guy — in fact, if you’ve seen Space’s promo for next week, it looks like the attitude adjustment didn’t take.
My theory is Zachariah is head of the Angels Who Want To Raise Lucifer Coalition, Uriel was just the fall guy, and since Castiel and Anna killed him, they both got yanked back to Heaven for a hard reset so they won’t be a problem. We’ve basically been told that there’s no sure way for angels to know whether their orders from their superiors are from God or somewhere up the chain, so in theory it’s possible for Zachariah (or another angel above him) to be engineering the whole thing.
At least, that’s how I would write it. XD
Liz, I like that. I think you make a good point. I know Castile is just doing what he is told. I am looking forward to having the old Castile back!
I know this comment is REALLY late, but I just found this review and couldn’t resist correcting one little thing 😉
That was the same actress playing the Winchester mom who played her in the pilot and Home from first season – Samantha Smith. She looked a bit different because she had recently given birth 😉
She even talked about the scene in When the Levee Breaks at a recent convention.
