Roots before branches is what Glee has felt like this past year, and for some reason this felt like the show throwing off its adolescent coat (well, mostly) as the finale drew to a close. It’s been a trying three years, for both the characters and the people who have come to adore them, and as the Seniors donned their robes and received their diplomas there was a bittersweet feeling about.

Failure, sacrifice and dreams were the main themes being thrown out, and I’m left to ponder how the show will carry on from here.

It’s come down to this. Three years (really three hours according to Artie) of blood, sweat, and tears see the New Directions finally head towards that much-vaunted National championship. The road there is paved with random and familiar intentions. Tina makes every swap bodies so she can learn a lesson and Rachel shows Carmen why she’s a golden shining star.

But really, the two hours belonged to Noah Puckerman.

With graduation drawing near, the Seniors of Glee partake in the sacred rite that is Senior Prom. But not everyone is happy. When Brittany bans hair gel from her dinosaur-themed dance much to Blaine’s dismay, and Rachel’s insecurities regarding Quinn rear their ugly head, Hummelberry and Blaine organize an Anti-Prom party in protest of their disenfranchisement.

Yes, it’s going to be another one of those episodes where nothing really happens.

Remember in On My Way, when Karofksy’s suicide storyline was buried under a lame Finchel wedding and lost its gravitas so to speak? The same thing happened with this episode. Choke could have been a good episode, if we had taken the three main arcs and done them separately. Instead it seems like a messy mish mash of ideas that the writers plucked out of thin air, and inevitably ends up shortchanging the most important of the three. Coach Beiste finds herself the victim of domestic violence, Puck encounters his deadbeat father, and Rachel and Kurt tackle their NYADA auditions.

Glee tribute episodes are always a bit of a misfire, mainly because the show doesn’t seem able to hit that sweet spot between character development and song choice. This week’s ode to Whitney was no exception. It was more of a campy soap opera romp through relationship drama and loss, leveraged by a teacher who can’t quite seem to adhere to his own lesson plan.

As New Directions belt out Whitney’s hits a relationship is tested by text messaging, teenagers realize there is life outside of high school and a not entirely unexpected couple come to life.

Mr Schue has had enough. After spending the entire season not caring, he’s finally decided that Finn, Mercedes and Santana need to figure out what to do with their lives post-McKinley. Quinn and her wheelchair disappear entirely from this episode as Schue decides disco and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, as well as swag in the form of John Travolta’s famous white suit, are his solutions to helping the three wayward Seniors discover their dreams.

But most important of all, Unique is introduced and finally shows me that The Glee Project can turn out a star.

Did the glittery disco ball shine, or did it fall to the ground and shatter? Read on after the jump to find out.

Last time on Glee Quinn got rammed by Clark Kent’s truck in what looked suspiciously like Smallville, the Finchel wedding was going ahead despite thoughts of faking a seizure, Karofsky tried to take his own life, and Sue decided to have a baby. This hiatus returned with answers for all those questions (except Karofsky, because that would be too much) and the episode was really saved by one thing, and one thing alone: Matt Bomer.

My god that man is too good-looking to be real. So how did the Disney Prince fare in Glee‘s warped McKinley universe? Read on after the jump to find out!
