So when I read that tonight’s episode was centered on Earl having a heart attack, I was definitely a little worried and apprehensive. The supporting characters are definitely not the strong part of this show and I immediately thought this would probably be one of their worst episodes. Was I right? Sadly yes.

I like the show (I wouldn’t write about it every week if I I didn’t), but tonight’s outing featured too much of the show’s trademark raunchiness and not enough heart. Read on for tonight’s recap.

We open at the diner, where Han makes an announcement that he’s made a special menu for Valentine’s night dinner. He’s basically doing it so he can charge one bigger price. We also see that Caroline is a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, and Max is very much not. Caroline even gives Max candy hearts, which elicits a “certain member” joke from Oleg. Sophie comes around and offers the girls a ride home in her town car, which she only uses when it’s raining. Oleg asks Sophie if he can hire her to clean his house, which leads to what felt like a 5 minute “coming” joke. When Max goes to hand Earl the last check for the night, Earl nonchalantly mentions that he’s having his 3rd heart attack. Max has Earl go to the hospital in Sophie’s town car.

At the hospital, Max and Caroline get Earl through a busy waiting room and say he has a history of heart trouble to get him to a doctor quicker. The male nurse at the front desk tells Max that Earl had a minor attack and is in good hands. She tries to go see him by telling the nurse that she’s his daughter (because her last name is Black) and then says that she’s his lover. Since that got her nowhere, Max has Caroline throw a distraction so she can sneak and see Earl while the nurse is gone. Caroline serves a distraction by throwing her lattes and screaming “These aren’t non-fat!” Max goes to see Earl, and he tells her he’s supposed to stay for a couple more days and asks if he can have his own room. Max fights with the nurse about it, but Caroline mentions that she used to date the guy whose family owns the wing of the hospital they’re in, so Caroline calls him to see if she can get Earl the room.

Caroline then sees Dr. David, the ex, who still vividly remembers being dumped by Caroline years ago. She asks him about Earl and he says he’ll see what he can do. Max and Caroline then take Earl to his private bedroom they call “Cribs: ICU Edition”. Back at the diner, Han’s hoping for a late Valentine’s Day crowd, but soon admits that it’s a bust and closes early to see Earl. At the hospital, Han is the first of the diner group to see Earl and Earl mistakes him for an angel (since he had wings on). Outside the room, Oleg gives Sophie some Valentine’s chocolates. Caroline goes to see David and they find out they both live in Williamsburg. Caroline asks him out, but David turns her down. David tells her he doesn’t see them happening again because of her father’s scandal and what people will think of them dating. When Caroline comes back and tells that to Max, Max goes down to talk to David before he leaves. Max asks David why he can’t be decent and tells him he made the biggest mistake of his life. Max then thanks him for taking care of Earl. Max also goes to the nurse and apologizes by giving him a heart shape candy. He asks her out and she says sure. Back at the apartment, Caroline tells Max that she used to feel bad for her since she didn’t know her dad, but now she feels bad for Max’s dad and says Max would have been a wonderful daughter. Sophie comes by and gives the girls flowers, one for Caroline from her dad and one for Max from Caroline’s dad. Max’s flowers come with a card thanking her for taking care of Caroline. The total for their cupcake shop is $865.

I loved that the writers showed that Caroline’s descent from top socialite to poor nobody is still around, and that while her family name may have helped with Earl it’s still a major hindrance to her rebuilding her life. I also liked the scene at the end with Max getting flowers from Caroline’s dad. While the show is built around the diner, the show is REALLY built around the relationship these girls have. Although the scenes with Max and Earl were sweet and really showed that the diner group is a family, I’ve found myself completely uninterested in the side characters. I’m still waiting for the day when the show announces that they’re gonna revamp the show and make it just about Max and Caroline. So what did you guys think of the episode? 1. I thought this episode was pretty good actually. It had some funny parts, (especially when Max was threatening the desk clerk, then took his number!) but what I liked the most was Max and Earl’s relationship. While I don’t think they need to beat us over the head with it, it’s nice to see a bit of a background come from their characters. We all know Max does have a dad. However, when Caroline realized that Earl has essential taken that role over, it did make sense. I also really liked that Caroline’s dad not only remembered her, but also included Max, further evidencing that the two girls are becoming family as well. However, I really want to know how he ordered them from prison when he’s supposed to be broke…Is there an FTD branch in the local federal prison?? Anyway… I can do without Han, he’s boring. I actually like the Oleg/Sophie dynamic…it softens his skeeziness (look a new word!) and also gives her some different material.
