Remember when Lily and Marshall made a deal to have a baby when they found Barney’s doppelganger? Well what would happen if they really did? Are they ready for that?
What about the rest of the gang … will Ted find a woman before the end of the season? And what is this dream job that Robin gets offered? Is Don even still around? And if so, what will happen with them? It all gets answered in the hilarious season finale of one of the bestest shows ever!
As a refresher, let’s remember the doppelgangers we’ve met: Lesbian Robin, Mustache Marshall, Stripper Lily and Mexican Wrestler Ted. The only one missing is Barney and when he is found, Lily and Marshall will try to have a baby. Marshall is so excited because he wants to be a dad and one day on the street, they find him! Cab Driver Barney. Lily doesn’t believe it’s the doppelganger and they call Barney, who is at work. It’s time! Lily tells Marshall to put a baby in her belly. Marshall wants to tell everyone but Lily wants to keep it a secret. Lily explains to Marshall if they do it’ll be like having everyone in the bedroom with them and he agrees. Ted tells the gang he wants to be a blond. He thinks he would look good and everyone knows he won’t. So they tell him not to do it knowing he’ll do the opposite and he decides to dye his hair. Oh man, this is gonna be great. Meanwhile, Don is still around and he and Robin are doing great at the station, even hosting other shows. They also are in total love. Marshall sees Cab Driver Barney and thanks him and it’s BARNEY. GAH! While this is going on, Robin gets an important phone call and the first person she calls is Ted for advice, who is getting his hair dyed at the salon. She’s been offered the lead anchor position … in Chicago. Dun dun dun!
Marshall asks Barney about the cab thing and he explains that he has a recording that plays when people call while he is out driving the cab. Robin is talking to Ted about the career vs. romance battle she always has and Ted says she always chooses career. He tells her to talk to Don but she says she needs to make the choice on her own. Ted also says he can’t be objective because he doesn’t want her to move away (would any of the gang want her to move??). Marshall asks Barney why he’s driving a cab and in typical Barney answer, it’s all about women: his goal is to have sex with a woman from every country in the world. However, the downfall to his plan is that women don’t want to have sex with cab drivers. Marshall tells Barney the baby plan and Barney is not on board. No babies until they’re 45! When Marshall tries to tell Lily there really isn’t a doppelganger, he can’t do it. Ted’s hair is blond and looks HORRIBLE and Barney is throwing out hilarious jokes at him. Robin tells Barney she might move to Chicago and the jokes stop. Marshall tries to tell Lily about the doppelganger and instead she says the doppelganger didn’t look like Barney at all. She says he was like a foot shorter and Asian with a soul patch! Barney walks in with the rest of the gang (Marshall about Ted: “Why is Ellen Degeneres in our bedroom?!” HA!). Barney tells Lily the doppelganger news and Robin tells the gang she’s taking the position in Chicago.
Everyone is at the bar all bummed out about Robin when she comes and tells them she’s staying (she changed her mind after looking at a picture of her and Don). Marshall confronts Lily about the doppelganger incident and understands that she’s just not ready to have a baby. They see another doppelganger Barney – Street Performer Barney! Don comes home to Robin and tells her he got offered the lead anchor position in Chicago … but he said YES. Oh what I want to write about that guy right now!!! Marshall and Lily confront doppelganger Barney and it’s the real Barney (AGAIN). Did I mention he’s shirtless?? Yummy. Anyhooooo, Don is being a total you-know-what to Robin and she walks out on him. Marshall and Lily figure out that Barney wants them to have a baby and that’s why he’s being the doppelganger. After they leave, a street performing woman from Estonia (where this doppelganger Barney is from) introduces herself … one more to check off his map list! Robin knocks on Ted’s door and asks if she can move back in. Of course! They are drunk on the couch and reflect back on where everyone was five years before. Ted gives her some great advice and they almost kiss but thankfully, Ted’s ugly hair gets in the way and they laugh instead.
Four months later, Lily is walking to the bar and sees Barney’s doppelganger working a pretzel cart. She brings the whole gang outside to see him only it’s totally not a doppelganger at all. Marshall tells the gang to go along with it because it means that Lily is ready!
And there ya go. The end of another great season of How I Met Your Mother. Don is gone, Lily and Marshall are trying to have a baby, Robin and Ted are roommates again, and Barney is really a softie at heart. With all the reflecting and Don out of the picture and Robin staying, will we see a Robin/Barney reunion next season? Will we ever find the real fifth doppelganger? Do you think everyone has a doppelganger? Leave your two cents below!
Line of the night: “We’ve all been searching for the five doppelgangers, right? Well eventually, over time, we all become our own doppelgangers. These completely different people who just happen to look like us. Five years ago? That girl was pretty great. But doppelganger Robin? She’s amazing.” – Ted to Robin
